It's not a sexy deal (like a David Savard acquisition would've been), but Nemeth will add stability to an Avalanche bottom pairing that has somehow featured upwards of 10 different defensemen this season.

Nemeth's play did take a nose dive this season in Detroit, but I'm hoping he can turn it around playing in a familiar Bednar system, while also having his ice time reduced from 18 mins-> 15ish mins.

Yeah, but I think that's mainly because Graves has been the only big man defender on the team for most of the year, so Bednar has been forced to play him. He also PK's while MacDonald doesn't.

If Nemeth plays well I think he'll cut into the importance of Graves being in the lineup a lot, because he'll play the same role, only better. Unless this lights a fire under Graves to finally play better.

I'd say the team needs at least two big man defenders. EJ is the only guy who could potentially kick out one of those two. But who knows if he is actually coming back.

I think this might be more of a reaction to how poorly Graves has played this season, rather than a replacement for EJ.

That play the other day where Graves got walked around by Bjugstad and easily made a pass to Hartman in slot for a goal was probably the tipping point. That can't happen in the playoffs.

I'd honestly consider playing Renouf ahead of Graves. Maybe Bednar feels the same way, and for a Cup contender that's concerning. Hence the Nemeth trade.

Uh let's not forget the beautiful pass graves made just last game to nuke's gwg. Come on now, graves is not that bad.

He has a big role and big responsibilities and therefore will look bad with all the pressure. Nemeth is a good relief valve for that pressure. McDonald is redundant with all the puck movers we can put out.

Girard-toews
Graves-makar
Nemeth-byram
McDonald.

No more of the AHL players plz.

No he hasn't. Not even close

I root for Graves, I think he's capable of playing much better than he has this year, but he's played poor mistake prone hockey most of his games this season. He's been a big liability on most of his shifts with and without the puck.

MacDonald on the other hand, even though he's played less games in a different role, has played well in most of his games.

Unfortunately, Graves hasn't played better than pretty much anyone this year except the guys way down the depth chart. He's probably been the weakest point on the entire team. Everyone has played well and had a pretty good year except him.

Welp, Graves was great today playing in the top 4 so :)

Graves played fine last game, but lets be real. One game does not negate almost an entire season of poor play up until this point. That was a nice pass, but lets not let recency bias fool us into thinking he's a good passer.

The timing of last game also isn't a coincidence. Like I alluded to earlier, the Nemeth trade might finally light a fire in Graves to play like he's capable of.

I'm a bit surprised so many people haven't seen how poorly he's played this year. He might literally be the only guy on the team that has underperformed this year. Everyone else has played well.

I'd say he looks bad in a relative sense. But he's a solid number 4/5 guy who has a defined role to play.

I think he's capable of being a good 4/5 but he hasn't played at a good 4/5 level this year IMO. He's just made too many mistakes. Hopefully that turns around by the time the playoffs start.

His reaction to the Nemeth trade reinforces my belief that it could motivate him. It was subtle, but I got a pretty clear sense he realizes his spot in the lineup could be on the line. He didn't even refer to Nemeth by name, even though he played with him his first season with the Avs. I think he realizes he'll have to play well to keep his spot in a healthy lineup.

Nemeth used to play decent physically. Him and EJ were pretty tough customers.

Another reason why Graves may be the odd man out in a healthy lineup if he doesn't outplay Nemeth.

Nemeth-EJ was the Avs top pairing a few years ago. If EJ can come back for the playoffs, that would make a pretty good 3rd pairing. Graves would too if he can play like he's capable of.

Graves isn’t leaving the lineup. For better or worse, he’s gained Bednar’s trust. Based off the usage recently, MacDonald will be the one sitting out once we’re healthy.

Toews - Makar
Byram - Girard
Graves - Nemeth
MacDonald

If Graves keeps playing poorly, and Nemeth plays well, who sits if EJ comes back for the playoffs?

Fate has brought us back together. And Graves, who is on a bit of an upswing, will look all that much better.

I just don't see Byram playing top4 minutes. I mean, look how sluggish others were coming back from Covid. And you want a 19 year old rookie, to come off covid, and come back from a concussion, to play top4 mins in the playoffs/playoff type hockey these last ~10 games.

Toews - Girard
Graves - Makar
Nemeth - Johnson (if healthy, if not Byram)

Is what I would roll with in the playoffs

And on the PK, you can run the 4 d man (Girard and Makar rest)

Not everyone has trouble coming back from COVID and not everyone has trouble coming back from concussions. If anything, being 19 helps with both.

Byram is one of the best defenseman on the team. I can't see them scratching him in favor of Graves or Nemeth.

Graves is only being given a big role because he's the only healthy defenseman with size. The importance of having Graves/Nemeth in the lineup falls off a cliff once EJ gets back and everyone is healthy.

Byram should be in the lineup no matter what. He's already better than Graves and Nemeth and he must be able to learn the game at high pressure.

With the way this team is trending, this move really is the icing on the cake.

I wouldn´t get my hopes up for EJ ever coming back again! This is some serious stuff.

Man, I really like EJ and i really hope EJ is our "Kucherov-Cap-Circumvention", but something tells me he is done.
EJ would be the perfect addition for this team if he comes back. If he does and we have a healthy lineup there might be a case for going 11F-7D at Compher's expense.
