That's a really solid deal for a great top pairing defenseman. For my money he's the best #2 in the league.

The he's a definitive #1 on 90% of other teams talk is rich tho. You don't know that. Posting charts that are mostly dependent on what team he plays on isn't proving anything.

Not to pile on but I always thought it was unusual how Toews was such a darkhorse, coming from nowhere to be a great young defenseman and the team that knew him best just gave him up.

Isles fan is trying to tell everybody and everybody laughed at us about how good he was. The reason we thought it was OK to trade him was they played in a defensive system and I thought we were keeping Leddy. They ended up trading Letty a year later, which made no sense because Toews signed a sweetheart deal.

That’s not what I remembered. He was coming off a rough series against Tampa and lots of Isles fans was down on him.

This contract just speaks to the kind of person he is. He's a gem, team-first, loves to win. Avs shouldve given him eight years instead of seven.

While this may be true, I hate this notion that the contracts players sign somehow dictate how they are as humans or what their character is.

This happens all the time on HF. Guys sign for max value and they're greedy/selfish. Guys sign a few hundred thousand or a million under what they anticipate and they're somehow a saint and giving player.

It's just business guys. Two mutually exclusive events.

Yes we do....

90% is maybe a little high since that would indicate he's basically a Top 5 guy... But he's a legit #1D, Top ~15 for sure and would be the #1 on more then half the teams in the league. You can literally look up any Dman ranking and they all have him inside the Top 15, or in HF Boards DMan ranking he was 16th.

That's great he's ranked high. Like I said I think he's really really good. But legit #1D are the best defenseman on their team. Toews isn't the best defenseman on his pair. Legit #1D have actually played and been deployed and produced at both ends of the ice like a #1D. I don't think you can say he's earned that label when he's never actually done the job other than handfuls of games when Makar is out.

I think it's a fair deal, given his age, he is guaranteed to be paid for another 8 years even if he starts to slip in 5 years and he's not close to what he is now, the contract won't be a burden on the Avs with the cap going up.

It's crazy being in the NYC hockey market and seeing whenever players leave the Devils/Isles, the rest of the league finds out how good their players are. More so, when guys left back in the day for us and more recently for you guys.

I’ve watched somewhere in the vicinity of 95% of the games Toews has played in an Avalanche sweater and I can absolutely tell you that he is a #1D. He checks every box: skating, defending, gap control, decision-making, physicality, transition play, special teams, goal scoring, and stick work. Just because Makar does everything better than him doesn’t mean there’s a weakness in his game. And to add a hot take to this thread, Makar benefits more from Toews than vice versa.

Makar has missed more than a handful of games, he missed 20+ last season alone and Toews has filled in and played as a #1 and done so at a level where he should be considered to be a top 20 D, which is the definition of being a number 1

Does this also apply to other positions? Has Malkin never been a #1C? Because if not, your metric sucks.

Man, this is like arguing Malkin and Draisaitl aren't 1C's.
