more than a fair deal. In a pure optimal capspace usage point of view, it might be better to move on from him, as his age dictates that he may not perform up to his caphit for the latter years. But for the next few years, he is a bargain at 7.2 for sure. He is too important to the Avs, and he earned it for bring the cup to denver.

Good value for Colorado. Im not sure how much longer their window is due to zero prospects or draft picks and the demise of Landeskog, but they can ride the remaining core as far as they’ll take them.
I would actually say our prospect pool right now is far better then it has been at any other points during our cup window, with the only exception being the one year where Byram was in our prospect pool.

Still not very good, but drafting Ritchie and Gulyayev in the first round last year gave it quite the boost compared to what we had had the last 3-4 years. Kovalenko doing things in the KHL has improved it nicely as well.

Avs got a 1-1.25M discount

Toews top value should have been around 8.5M

If he was brought at 9.5M -10M he would be a terrible deal halfway through.

At 7.25M when Toews falls off a bit, the cap rise should still make this a decent deal

Aves have enough cap space for this?
They will have job to do after this season they have 10 forward signed 5def and 1 goalie
It will rest only 1.8M for a goalie 2forward and 1 def.
The need to have 1 player between Girard Manson Nichushkin left via trade

Great work by the Avs getting guys to buy in.

If Mack and others were on the other side of 30 I dont think Toews or whoever would've taken. discount but their core is still young and capable of winning more cups.

Horrible contract that will age badly.

Am I doing that right? Apparently anyone signed at 29 years of age is due to implode any day now and the team will rue the contract almost immediately.

I was admittedly being flippant with “zero” but I think they’ll likely need a “Pastrenak like” surprise to really kick the window out realistically. Those things are tough. Anyways riding out the core as far as it’ll go is the right thing. Wouldn’t be shocked if Colorado got one more.

Didn't the Islanders decide to keep Leddy and trade Toews? Interesting situation... Trade assets to unload Leddy or take assets to trade Toews.

Cap issues back fired on the Islanders. I'm guessing they believed he was good but was not improving at that stage.

I wouldn't call it absurd, its a very good deal though. 1M more than Weegar who is essential the same defenseman. At the end of the day Toews is still a #2, an elite #2 but still a #2. The first 4 years of the deal should be good before we see amy noticeable fall off.
You think Weegar is as good as Toews?
Hockey might not be the sport for you to watch have you tried Baseball?

Meanwhile a player with less than half a year of NHL experience gets $8..35M.
THIS is how contracts should be handed out.

As an Isles fan, there were certainly timing factors, but remember that Toews was coming off a rough playoff season while Leddy was outplaying him. They couldn't keep both due to the Snow contracts that had to be worked off. Toews was arbitration-eligible too, and that uncertainty figured into the decision, while Leddy had term left.

I was a big fan of Toews and his college coach pretty much predicted he'd be a star in the NHL. It's a shame for us, but the arbitration issue was a big headache and led to the trade to Colorado. One of the 2 2nd-round picks was used for Calle Odelius, who looks like a similar player, and impressed in training camp to the point where the Isles kept him in Bridgeport at 19 years old instead of sending him back to Sweden.

I'm happy for Devon, he's a great story about a later development.

Weegar is the same as Toews? Interesting.
