I rhetorically stated that he was struggling. Am I mistaken ? Is he playing good ?
Toews hasn't been at this best, but the -6 is a reflection on the team. Toews was on the ice for (3) Empty Net goals over his past three games.
By any advanced metric, Colorado is playing well. They're only allowing 25.2 shots against per game (2nd) and the (9th) fewest scoring chances allowed per game. Meanwhile, they're (10th) in shots for per game, and more notably (3rd) in scoring chances per game. Yet the outcome is reversed. The Avalanche are 24th in ES goals for and 26th in ES goals against. A rash of forward injuries have impacted their ability to finish off plays. Abbhorent goaltending has the team at an .835 SV%, 3% lower than the next worst team.
A two-way defenseman like Toews is heavily impacted by this situation, especially given he doesn't play on the top power play unit. He's definitely off to a slow start indivudually, possibly caused by the LBI he missed time with in October. But his play hasn't been worrying or any type of major talking point.
