Happy for Toews. We'll have to wait and see what the dollars and term look like.

But, if it is a long-term extension — I can't help but feel it would be the wrong move for the long-term competitiveness of the Avs. That would be rewarding a player for winning a past Stanley Cup, rather than committing to the most effective use of their cap-space to chase future Stanley Cups.

Tampa has paid through the nose to get out of this jam before and it is now affecting their competitiveness.
Who did the Bolts pay through the nose to get out of a jam salary cap wise? And who did they commit to long term that is hurting their chances to compete now?

Don't mess with happy.

He gets to play for the cup for at least 2-3 years with Avs and if Avs need to reload, he can be traded to a contender quite easily.

People keep dogging Girard, but depending on how this year goes, it could very well be Manson that is the casualty if one is required.

Different skill sets, but that Manson contract concerns me more

This must be a good deal, nobody in this thread has criticised it yet.

I wouldn't call it absurd, its a very good deal though. 1M more than Weegar who is essential the same defenseman. At the end of the day Toews is still a #2, an elite #2 but still a #2. The first 4 years of the deal should be good before we see amy noticeable fall off.

The reason it's absurd to me is because the cap will increase so much over the next few years.

I think we'd have to pay a hefty price to get another team to take that contract...he also has a full NTC right now, I believe, and will have a 12-team no trade list after July 1, which means he can block trades to all the clubs like Arizona.

wtf, how is one of the best defenseman in the world about to be a UFA getting a million less than guys like Sanderson and Power who would still be RFAs for awhile
Im going to guess because he is 30 and this contract will cover several non peak years?
This seems like a fair deal for both sides. Toews is a hell of a player.

Only played more than 68 games once too. Thats crazy for a 30 year old.
Yeah but a lot of that is circumstantial (I know you are just presenting a fact here, no problem with that).

Taking a deeper dive, he’s really been pretty ever present. This isn’t an injury prone guy.

2018-19: Rookie year, played in the AHL for first half but then was ever present including the playoffs

2019-20: Played 90 of 92 games (including playoffs - COVID shortened but long playoff run)

2020-21: Played 53 of 56 games (including playoffs - COVID season)

2021-22: Played 86 of 102 games (including all 20 games on the road to the Cup)

2022-23: Played 87 of 89 games (with playoffs)

Take away his rookie year when he was still establishing himself and Toews has played in 316 of a possible 339 games (an average of 76.5 per 82). And I think every single playoff game his teams have been involved in including two runs of 20 games or more and only really one season with any kind of significant missed time.

His played a lot of games the last 5 years but because he became a pro much later and was a collegiate athlete with the much shorter schedules - I think Toews’ wear and tear is considerably less than most guys his age. Combined with his skating ability and style, I think he’s gonna be really good well into his 30’s.

Right now, I think you're right, but if he can stay healthy this season and show that he's still a capable 2nd pairing RHD who can PK and provide some physical play, that should help open up the market a little bit. The Avs might not get back much for him, but they at least wouldn't have to pay to move him.

The other option is that he's injured again and ends up on LTIR with Landeskog.

Isles only had 90 games in 19-20 so he played in all of them. Also, 20-21 would be 63 of 66 including playoffs.
