I don’t know if anyone else made this point, but it was clear that Necas and Drury were on their way out with both of them almost going to arbitration. They weren’t in our long term plans anyway.

But Carolina was also clear that Necas wasn't getting dealt for anything but a superstar return. That turned out to be 100% correct.

I hadn't seen it, but posts have been moving fast and I might have missed it. Regardless, it's a good point. And Necas's contract taking him right to UFA wasn't exactly subtle either. I never really read too much into the Drury arbitration filing, but it does tend to mean parties not seeing eye to eye.

I was getting ready to post similar. As I'm starting to look through some of the other reactions, I see worry about if Rantanen doesn't sign, it's a bad trade. I get it, but I'm not going to sweat a year of Necas. I think we were either trading him in the offseason or keeping him and he'd walk after next season. I'm not losing sleep over that. We'll either have Rantanen or cap space to make some other big time moves.

I really think we can make the big contract work with Rantanen if he ends up being okay with locking in here. This is the whole point to having all these young players and prospects, having a good team where you can probably lure cheap vets pretty easily, and being able to identify talent that other teams aren't clamoring to get that turn out to be a great fit like Robinson. It's so you can get a few pieces that make you top heavy. And the fact that the other core guys like Aho, Svech, Jarvis, and Slavin don't really break the bank themselves helps that as well.

EXCUSE ME?

I hate giving up Necas, because he's incredibly exciting to watch when he's "on" (especially OT). But if it seemed unlikely for him to re-sign after next and and we feel confident we can ink Rantanen to a good contract (and we should have plenty of cap space to do so), it's a huge W. I kinda wanted to find a way to turn Necas into Rants when he went RFA last summer.

I wonder what the ask for retaining on Halls contract as well since after retaining on Rantanen Chicago only has one retention spot left. Surely that could've been bargained but probably more than Tulsky wanted to give and Chicago is probably planning to use that spot around the deadline.

Lol
Posting for the 3rd time on this.

Someone please explain the Hall move. He seems to be past his sale date and very expensive.

Hall is just this year's Kuznetsov. Cheap veteran rental help at forward. With Chicago retaining 50% on Rantanen, the Canes had room to take on a high expiring cap hit.

Done deal:

Chicago receives their 3rd back, retains 50% of Rants, and we get rights to Nils Juntorp

Who is Nils Juntorp? Any good as a prospect?

Hall is in the last year of his expensive contract though; so no long term commitment from us. Should be decent for the 3rd line. After Carrier was announced as LTIR, he basically replaces him.

Carolina can fit Rantanen if they wish. There is now $29.5M, possibly a little more, coming off the books:

Orlov (7.75M)
Burns (5.28M)
Roslovic (2.8M)
Hall (6M)
Andersen (3.4M)
Rantanen (4.625M)

Canes are probably re-signing Robinson, but he'll be a pretty reasonable cap hit. Also, Nikishin's ELC will be in Orlov's spot. RD next to Slavin will either be Burns for a cheap one-year deal or Morrow's ELC. They'll have plenty of space for Rantanen with the sort of affordability that we have throughout the lineup.
