Interesting deal. Both players come with some risk. Can Mittelstadt fit into a system with defensive accountability and adjust to Mackinnon getting the Ozone starts instead of him? Can Byram stay healthy and grow into his potential? He's currently a 4-5 type defenseman, but there's top pairing upside.
Mitts played with Tuch and Skinner, Peterka and Quinn, Greenway and Okposo and a myriad of other combos. He will simply go out with whoever and play good d and deceptively creative offense. Avs getting a good player.

I don't mind Buffalo getting worse, but not at the expense of Colorado getting better.

Mitts has been great defensively and is best in transition, imo. Someone look up the advanced stats and tell me how wrong I am, but he hasn’t struck me as an offensive-first player in a while. He’s the defensively sound guy we throw out there after Thompson and Cozens go gongshow for 2 minutes.

Do Avalanche trainers/medical staff know something about Byram others don't??
Not at all. Why do people think this has to do with injury? He's got lots of potential, has struggled this year, and they moved him for a solid #2 centre drafted two years ahead of him. Byram obviously has lots of potential, but Walker might be an upgrade on the back end for this year's cup run. And if Mittelstadt works out the #2 centre problem is finally fixed for the long haul. It was a huge problem before Kadri and has been a huge problem since he left.

Buff developed this guy forever only to trade him for a defenseman they didn’t need as soon as he got good

Selling high on Mittelstadt makes a lot of sense though. He's having a career year and on pace for 62 points, whilst Cozens who should be the 2C long term put up 31 goals a and 68 points last year whilst being a couple of years younger.

All the top contenders are absolutely loading up, playoffs are gonna go so hard this year

You always get scared sending a younger dman like Byrum away for any forward really. Usually the team getting the dman wins the trade when you look back 5 years down the road.

Colorado looks like they’ll finally fill that hole though. Getting Walker helps this year, but obviously that’s a big hole for years to come with Byrum now gone. If he stays healthy, great trade for Buffalo because they have the forwards to make a trade like this.

Good trade for both teams. I think Casey is a little better right now but Byram has a little more to show.

It's just really tough to gauge how good Byram can be. Honestly he's not THAT skilled at least by today's standards for skilled defencemen and his reads are often off in his own end. Fantastic skater though and plays with a chip on his shoulder. He needs some good coaching.
