if the avs are healthy they are stacked. not sure of the lines tho

drouin - mackinnon - rantanen
landy - mittelstadt - nuke
parise - colton - lehky
wood - cogliano - o'connor

Mittelstadt is a glorified rental. He is going to be an arbitration eligible RFA this summer with the production to demand a 5-6 year deal at $5-6M AAV.

There's really no distinction between arb eligible RFA and UFA status anymore. When you look at it this way, Byram is actually a pretty damn good return.

why would the avs give up on byram?
he's been a bit weaker this year, which is definitely not reason to give up on him yet (he hasn't been bad, just not as good as previously), but he's definitely not going to break into the Makar/Toews pairing and we're really bad at finding 2Cs.

would definitely not be surprised if he fully blooms with Dahlin though

So here's the Sabres logic.

They didn't want to spend $5/per on a 3rd line center.
They get a former top 5 pick/top 4 who is on a bridge deal and traded a guy that wasn't in the plans.

I just am not sure why they did this now and not during the Summer.

Could Jokiharju be on his way out as well?

Byram could use more PP time, but the real issue in my opinion was that he was stuck behind 2 better LD.
Give him the future of at least consistent 2nd pairing minutes with a competent partner and he will regain his swagger. (I think Dahlin is great on the right side)

I think Buffalo will be more than happy with him by the end of the year

I think he'll get a long term deal closer to $7M AAV. Especially with a whole season playing with the Avs, his numbers are likely to keep rising.

I like Byram more as a player but he's definitely stalled a bit in his development.

From a fit standpoint it makes more sense for COL than BUF, but maybe the Sabres didn't want to pay him & took the best value they could get. They do need to shakeup that roster.
I feel like Buffalo could have gotten more in the offseason

No way he's signing for under $6M. His next deal starts with a 7

Either way, he's due for a huge raise in like 3 months which depresses his trade value the way it does for any pending UFA vs. a similar player who is signed long term. Sabres did very well here. I would much rather roll the dice on Byram than, say, a late 1st and late 2nd.

Don't really understand it for Buffalo at all.
Samuelsson injured, Eric Johnson headed out most likely. They also have a RHD in Jokiharju that has been in the top 4 and is due a pay raise and maybe they are maximizing his value at the deadline.

5-6M contract for Mittelstadt is a steal.

To call this a fleece would be extreme, but I think COL wins this trade massively.
If only because Byram is more of the same (LD, injury prone, needs to prove more defensively, will have growing pains, etc...) when the Sabrea desperately need the opposite. Yuck.

Colorado fans will love Mitts, and I'll be rooting for him.

I mean adding a LD seems fine with Dahlin on the right. But more that Mittlestadt is just.. better.

My neutral fan perspective is that this is disastrous for Buffalo.

If you looked at the Sabres and thought "this team needs another fledgling LD who is learning how to think the defensive side of the game" then I could see how you'd disagree. But it looks to me like they just traded their top forward for a redundant part.

I like it for Colorado. They needed a 2C and they got a very good 2C. I'm not sure how good of a playoff piece he'll be.
