Why did this trade even happen!? I literally do not understand the logic in the move at all unless the Sens have an unreasonably high opinion of Zaitsev not shared by any other team in the league. Even then, long term contracts that cover age 30+ seasons of non-star players are anchors in this league. And nice touch tossing in the 3rd rounder for the bonus. Guess it was either that or throw in our 6th and get back their 7th for some reason. Pierre never deviates too much from his calling cards of stupidity.

This trade happened so the sens can reach the floor by not paying the money to reach the floor they got 6.6m in cap space for the price of 3.1m. Its all Melnyk. Its not a trade to make the team better now or in the future its too save every last f***ing dollar.

Melnyk needs to hit the cap floor
This deal saves Melnyk 3.5 million he get s to keep in his pocket from signing bonuses the Leafs paid out

This deal made Melnyk 3.5 million richer

Nikita Zaitsev is not the kind of player good teams want locked in for 5 years at a 4.5M cap hit. The Leafs were under water on this contract, and Dorion bailed them out. And of course they give up another pick to save a few million dollars.

Thanks guys, guess I was just holding out hope this team still made moves for hockey reasons and not just for money reasons.

Other teams trade picks to improve their teams. If we trafed our picks for decent prospects we could start comparing our gms actions to those of his peers in a more positive light. Until then you have fun defending the indefensible

A 2020 third round pick, if everything falls into place, might end up in the NHL in 2024, if at all.

A third round draft pick has (historically) a 30% of making it to the NHL.

Not worth crapping your pants about.

People are becoming absolutely irrational. I understand that Melnyk is disliked and rightly so but put away the tinfoil hats. This isn’t a horrible trade. The negativity is astounding. This summer is going amazingly well compared to last summer. Just enjoy the team for what it is...entertainment. That’s all.

Sometimes I think some of you guys go overboard with the Dorion hate, but this trade is like a satire of everything he and this team gets made fun of for on this board. (Getting hustled into giving up additional assets when we're already doing the other team a favor, selling assets for cash, etc)

Amongst all of the (warranted) negativity in this thread, I do want to share my anecdote about Harpur.

On St. Patrick's, I saw Harpur, Ceci and Duclair at the Heart and Crown. It was the day after they beat the leafs 6-2. I recognized them and I walked over to them and said "Hey I was at the game last night with my dad and he's a big leafs fan, so thanks for giving them a proper beat down" and Harpur put his hands on my shoulders and yelled "I f***IN HATE THE LEAFS". So I had a soft spot for him but he's terrible at hockey so he had to go. All the best to them

It's a bad trade because we bailed out a team from a supposedly immovable contract without really being compensated.

It's a typical kick the can down the road trade where we added 2 roster players and some further cash to our team this upcoming season at the expense of taking a lot of risk with the years 2 through 5 of the Zaitsev contract.

The trade has been panned outside of just hfsens. It isn't just irrational sens fans that think we got bent over once again.

Honestly, this is up there with takimg on Boedker instead of picks. Its just a really shortsighted move with very limited upside.

I read for 2-3 years that Ceci is the worst hockey player in the universe and had no value, and he returns Zaitsev and Brown? lol

Maybe the Leafs are stupid too

That being said, it's never going to be ideal when you build your hockey team mainly trying to fit financial constraints. Ottawa can't be competitive in this league, unless new owner/arena but well it should be well known now.

Well, Zaitsev was a cap dump, Brown was the "sweetener" for us taking his contract. We did the Leafs a favour. We saved ~4 million because of the Leafs paying both of their bonuses today before they were traded.

They scratched our back while we scratched theirs

How is Zaitsev a cap dump if he is much better than Ceci?

Lol..... We gave them cap relief...... And we give up the pick, and yet people here will still defend this....We took 5 years of Zaitsev ......Carolina bought a 1st for 4 mil.... We sell 5 years of cap and a 3rd for 4 mil....This is exactly what is wrong with this team, and why the fans will stay away in droves.....

We arent building anything,we are keeping EM afloat that is all

Watch Ceci go to Toronto and break out as a 60 point 2 way d-man

I feel like the Ceci acquisition is some weird analytic experiment by the dweebs in the Leafs front office. Maybe Dubas made somebody a bet that he can make the guy a positive possession player for the first time in his career.

Looks like the Sens took the money saved by the Leafs paying Zaitsev's bonus [3.5M] and rolled it right into signing Ron Hainsey. That's actually kind of smart in a way. We probably couldn't have afforded both on our budget.

It's sort of strange to me to see the negative reaction to this deal. We pay picks to save real money. This isn't new. In fact we'll probably see more of it going forward, especially if attendance stays low.

It is what it is. Fielding a roster on a shoestring budget is hard, and you have to make 'bad' deals on paper to do it.

So we going to sign our RFA,s or trade them too???My bet is we have one or two holdouts, until the cheque from Toronto clears

Why even have picks after the first round. Its not like the only reason this team has been even close to respectable is by making the most of late round picks.
