Isn't his contract up - and didn't Ottawa not allow him to interview for a head coach job? I can't recall, but I think that was the case, in which case, I'd be surprised if he came back.

I think his leash is pretty much 15 games, I'm not even kidding. I think if we aren't 10-5 or at the very least 9-6, he's out. What use is 8-7 really.
No idea on his contract, best I could find was a 3 year deal, starting in 19/20.
So I doubt he re-upped for only 1 year.

People are hard on Capuano assuming he's the issue, but if DJ wants him in that spot on his staff and is keeping him there, shouldn't we be questioning DJ's assessment of that area of his team and theoretically keeping a guy in place that isn't getting the job done?

You could, but this off season is different than most others in the past, with some factors outside of control.

I believe the entire coaching staff got a three year deal with a one year team option, though I'm going by memory and may be wrong.

Edit, looks like beech found a link, it was a 3 year with the final year being a team option, not an extra year at a team option

he was re-upped in 2021 for a further 3 years.

22/23 - 24/25

Thanks . But we were talking about Cappy’s contract

If everyone thought he was spectacular, he wouldn't have settled for a HC position on a budget team, likely paying him less than most of the other HCs in the league.

Every Junior Coach, AHL Coach and every assistant Coach in the NHL aspire to be a NHL Head Coach….. so when DJS was offered one of the finite number of NHL head Coaching jobs, he listened to and accepted the offer…. He could not of cared less where the HC job was, he was offer the opportunity to ascend to his set goal, to be a NHL head coach .

Are you suggesting he should have taken a pass, and waited until the NY Rangers came calling?

DJ Smith and his staff are incredibly lucky that the sale dragged on as long as it did, and that the hiring window for coaches has largely passed. He is getting an opportunity very few coaches ever get - last one I can recall would be Barry Trotz. He had better take full advantage, because if this team stumbles out of the gate both the coach and GM will be gone by the time they get back from Sweden.

The apologists have a little more time to bask in the glow of Dorion and DJ.

I would guess everyone stays in place unless they resign.. for a bit yet. I don't know how quick this all gets the go ahead from the NHL and the board of governors or what they have to do logistically. Any guesses on how long this takes to get the new owners steering the ship?

Sometime in September …. After he unloads his 10% stake in the Montreal Canadiens, and the sale of the Senators close.

Just an interesting thought. Why did Debrincat and Chychrun's defensive metrics and analytics look so much better on Chicago and Arizona (both bottom feeders) right before joining the Sens?

Hopefully DJ takes a crack at this one too.

A lot of blame seems to get pointed at Capuano. A guy DJ appears to want to keep on his staff and the team wouldn't let interview for other jobs.
