Almost to the end of 2001

- The "Kiss My Ass Club" isn't the great TV Vince thinks it is

- Can you guys just freaking leave JR alone? Beating up on him for heat is the cheapest heat of all

- I wish Taker's heel turn was done without humiliating JR but I love what they're doing with him. The big nasty bastard wants "RESPECK" and he's gonna school yard bully the entire WWF. I can dig it. My body is SO f***ing ready for this. I just hope it doesn't involve beating up Howard Finkel or someone else like that. Just give me copy and paste heel work with cheap shots, backstage muggings, cheating, trying to run people over and backing off when a guy like The Rock gets in your face.

- I know I said this before but it bears repeating. Sorry Austin. Not buying your new found feud with Vince. Going out there with "Give me a hell yeah" like it's 1998 within a week of WCW/ECW getting cancelled does not absolve 8 months of you trying to out-do HHH/DX as the most insufferable heel gimmick of the day. All it was, was nearly a year of someone being an annoying, paranoid douchecanoe hollering "wHaT?" probably a thousand times until the fans finally understood what he was trying to do. At this point, the only main event talent I have to cheer for is the Rock. And oh yeah, you didn't out-do HHH/DX. You were just annoying big guy.

- Thank God HHH got hurt and missed the entire invasion plotline. I'm not wishing ill on the man. I'm saying that if I'm STILL talking about the crap he did nearly 2 years ago (in WWF re-watch time) you can take my word for how thankful I am that we didn't get whatever his ridiculous antics would have seen at the same time. I don't know if I could have handled that and wHaT?! 30 times a show for the better part of a year.

- That said, I AM ready for HHH to come back. I'm ready for a certified badass packing a chip on his shoulder and sledgehammer riding the wave of glory that come with a legitimate comeback story. I'm sure to enjoy this for as long as it lasts and he might go down as one of my favorite babyfaces of all time. I don't know exactly when he makes that triumphant return at MSG. Hopefully it's before the Royal Rumble and he can win it. I don't really know how X8 is gonna go either. This is a rare moment where I only *sort of* know what goes on and can get thoroughly excited for it. I DO know at some point he's gonna fake a DX reunion with Shawn Michaels and start one of the bloodiest feuds of all time. Thank God I restrained myself and didn't watch any of this over the years.

The HHH return and subsequent face run is pretty amazing and probably peak HHH IMO, which leads into the Michaels return feud.

I'm really excited for it because I don't really remember any of it. By spring 2002 I was catching Smackdown on UPN 44 more regularly but we didn't have cable so Raw was completely out the window and I don't remember HHH much on Smackdown. And plus Survivor was the hottest show on television at the time so it was hit or miss how much I saw around then because it was on Thursdays at 8 right when Smackdown started too.

It's awesome to see how much I missed. That feud with Shawn Michaels is gonna keep me in this watch through regardless of if it's still the Attitude Era. The temptation of Paul Heyman's Smackdown and the rise and fall of Lesnar might be too great for me to pass up too.

What was meant to go from WrestleMania 13 to 18 might wind up going all the way to 21 where John Cena took over the mantle of the company. I gotta stop somewhere and that might be it because the creative direction just changed way too much after that

I thought that was the worst HHH we've seen. He got so huge and really slowed down. Didn't seem to get back on track until later in the year. And the HHH-Jericho feud was terrible.

Speaking of terrible feuds, I'm pausing Vengeance 2001 (Y2J BAYBAY!!!) to say "Why damn it why?" on this feud between the Hardys. There's slow burning a feud and then there's doing this EVERY Raw and Smackdown for like 7 weeks. It's gotten so predictable I just skip their segments because I already know either A) They're going to lose their match because they're not on the same page or B) Lita's getting wiped out somehow and they're gonna lose.

My God pull it out of the oven she's freaking burned. And they added Lita in a special guest referee stipulation (which is almost always terrible) and she counted Matt being pinned with his foot on the ropes. Just let Matt freak out and leave the team tomorrow on Raw. Dear Lord I'm begging for it because the match itself looked like 2 kids wrestling in their back yard. The fact they're so good as a team and against the entire WWF but not against each other is something like Beethoven not being able to compose unless he's completely deaf and can't hear shit.

I'm making it sound worse than it is but it just sucks because they're a genuinely entertaining team. I already lost Edge and Christian, I lost Too Cool (although Albert actually isn't working out too bad with Scotty) and now I'm (probably) gonna lose the Hardys.

At least Mattitude Hardy was hilarious and amazing and I get to see Jericho win the big one twice.

Edit: I'll take a moment for a mea culpa here. On the Smackdown before Vengeance, I had a sneaky feeling that once the Rock started screwing with Vince so many times he was gonna bring out Rikishi back from the dead to shove Vince's face up that ginormous ass instead of Vince puckering up to the Rock

I was right and laughed hysterically anyway. It is terrible TV at best but Vince sold it so well and Rikishi was so hype that I couldn't help myself.

I'll give Vince credit. Dude's willing to embarrass himself like no one I've ever seen. He's the epitome of someone not asking to do something he wouldn't do right down to peeing his own pants on television

Today I learned of a curious incident intersecting hockey and wrestling: WrestleMania III. On March 29, 1987 the Pens were hosting the Habs. Game was delayed because the big event in Pontiac was being broadcast at The Igloo on closed circuit television. Humorous tidbit from Bleeding Green by Christopher Price.

Almost done with 2001. A few thoughts

- Maybe I had my expectations twisted up but Edge defeats Christian for the IC title and the feud just dies right then and there. Every time he comes out for a match I'm expecting Christian to get involved because he lost to little brother but it just never happens. Oh well. Having these guys as IC and Euro champions rules hard. I'm happy for both their success. Christian doesn't have "the look" Edge does but he's every bit as talented. Truly an underappreciated talent if there ever was one

- Egoholic Jericho is great heel work. Genuinely funny stuff at times. The way he got the titles and has retained them is greasier than an unemptied vat in a restaurant but I'll enjoy it while it lasts. He deserves the push

- Speaking of egoholic, I'm like 99% sure RVD meets the clinical criteria to be a pathological narcist because all he does is talk about himself. But he's laid back and has a mesmerizing, acrobatic style. I get why the guy is popular. Holy crap the push they're giving him is enormous. They've done everything but give him the WWF championship.

- Let's talk about the opposite of push. Either Lance Storm is a glutton for punishment or he REALLY pissed Vince off somehow. Or (and more likely) Vince just thinks its funny humiliating this poor SOB week after week after week. This guy must've been desperate to provide for his family to have to put up with this. I genuinely feel bad for him. He's probably the most graceful performer I've seen in the ring. I haven't gone to look at anything he's had to say about his time in WWF/WWE but I don't imagine much of it is going to be very good.

- Oh God... so I was doing my laundry and I dug up a memory of what will happen soon. Vince is gonna try to kill the WWF with a "lethal dose of poison" and bring back the NWO *fart noise* I literally can't think of anything I have ever wanted to see less than X-Pac yet another clique. Like they bring him up sometimes and just crap on him and these several weeks without him have not been without my notice. I'm burned out on the guy. Not excited about Hall or Nash either. Hogan endeared himself well at least.

- I don't miss Shane and I don't miss Stephanie. Although, Stephanie has an uncanny ability to be likeable when she is casted that way and not some snobby trust fund kid. Seeing her as Smackdown! GM again is gonna be the bomb.

- BILLY AND CHUCK!!! LMAO!! HAHAHAHA!!!! Oh my God this is gonna be so awkward isn't it? Screw it. I'm ready to be entertained by this gimmick

- I give Big Show about 2 more weeks before he murders whatever small tag team partner he's working with and turns heel again because he's not doing anything here as a babyface

- It's occurring to me that I better enjoy whatever matches The Rock is in because there's not going to be many more of them. He's gonna put over Lesnar at SummerSlam 2002 and that's basically about it for him because he was passing the torch to The Next Big Thing. Crap dude I have seriously taken The Rock for granted here. I somehow have had it in my head that this dude is gonna last forever

Last Smackdown of 2001

- I absolutely love this incarnation of Undertaker. This is genuinely despicable heel work taking guys out like this. I just don't want it reduced to where he literally can't beat anyone unless it's someone like Spike or Tajiri. Please God give me more

- Speaking of heel work, "You can't fire me" Test is pretty good too. The only problem is that it can only stay hot for so long. Abusing officials and hitting on women is not necessarily good heat but it absolutely works because of how realistic it is for someone to act this way. But I think by about spring they're going to need something different

- I know at some point Kurt is getting his head shaved by Edge. This is gonna be amazing because poor Kurt is just lost for the last month here. That goofy ass wig is just what the doctor has ordered

- Big Show is WAAAAAYYYY overdue for a push. He just went ballistic on Taker for killing Tajiri and I am crossing my fingers for an extended program here. I wouldn't mind seeing him get a run as champ again. I truly, genuinely like the big guy.

- Remember how I said there wasn't much more I didn't want to see more than X-Pac in another clique? I didn't realize Bossman was an option. His feud with Big Show is one of the worst of the Attitude Era. Pulling a casket out of a funeral is Jerry Springer stuff. It was not well done.

- I forgot to mention it after it happened: okay the church chase and supermarket best down with Austin and Booker T was funny. It reminded me of Crash Holly's matches because it was just complete lunacy and chaos.

- HHH is gonna be back in less than 2 weeks. God I'm gonna regret looking forward to this so much. I'm not prepared for another reign of terror. The first one was so bad man. I don't wish injuries on guys but thank God we got a break. From a writing standpoint dude deserves to eat some bad gas station sushi or something

All of them. Here's an odd thing about the AWA. Except for Hulk and Mr Perfect (Bockwinkel if the reader considers him a big name outside the AWA), they never let the bigger names become the AWA World Heavyweight Champion. Weird.
Well, there's a reason for that.

Verne didn't trust anybody with his belt outside of a select few. The dumbest thing he ever did was let Hogan slip thru his fingers then had a red hot Road Warriors and let them leave too.

Hell, he had the Freebirds and refused to let them do what they do best at the time, which was cause riots.

Verne was a good payoff guy up until the territory started to bottom out, and he had an easy schedule. He had nobody to blame but himself for letting all the talent he had leave.

And the sad thing? Right before the pink room era he assembled a decent roster of workers. He had a coked up Tully Blanchard, Cowboy Bob Orton (washed up but could still work), Foley, a singles pushed Saito who was still in his prime, Backlund on spots. He had enough to kick start a new era but he lost his entire fan base. They had friggin ESPN and blew that deal and ESPN was paying them.

I remember going to a house show where there was maybe 10 other people in the crowd and it's the only reason why I say Tully Blanchard because I saw the guy have an incredible match with JT somebody and the milkman got his ass kicked by Saito.

I got a three dollar nose bleed and was then told I could move up to front row by the announcer. Best three bucks I ever spent.

Pausing Royal Rumble 2002 in my Attitude Era watch through to say you wouldn't think a feud between Edge and William Regal would be all that great but hot diggity dog this is good. Regal with those damn brass knuckles every match is just *chef's kiss* oh my God man I can't complement enough how well they're pulling off this man as easily the dirtiest competitor in the WWF. How can you not hate this man with all your guts?

Bravo. Encore! Encore! War the Englishman being IC champion and the story of Edge getting it back!

A few weeks away from No Way Out 2002

- I'm getting real close to the time where I started my fandom back in 2002. I'm reliving a ton of fleeting memories now

- NWO! NWO!! NWO!!!!! OMG GUYS DIDNT YOU HEAR? NEW WORLD ORDER!! Annnnddd the crowd goes mild. None more than me. I know they're legends (and I respect them for it) but I am not a Hall and Nash guy. Hogan, you're good brother.

- Can't wait for Stone Cold to shoot his next speech about all the food he's gonna eat next! Work harder man. The WHAT?!!? chant is a virus. Thanks bruh. If you beat Jericho at No Way Out it's not that I won't care, it's that I'm just gonna be waiting for Rock to be champion again. I have no idea what happens at Mania X8 other than Rock vs Hogan

- The Rock might be actual God

- I realize now Edge absolutely did not invent the You Suck chant at Angle. It's been happening for several weeks already on its own. There was a Smackdown or something in a place like Omaha in 2000 or (or early 2001) and they chanted you suck at his entrance like they'd been doing it for years. I'm shocked this didn't catch on back then

- I knew Golddust was gonna go after RVD. Oh man this feud is gonna stink like old fish isn't it?

- So Stephanie DID say she was pregnant! Jesus Christ how do I even remember that? I only saw it once. I thought she might have done it in like 2001 or something. I was convinced maybe I dreamt it

- On that note it's interesting to watch HHH at the height of his babyface run. I'm watching it in complete disbelief because perhaps the only thing more unrealistic than Mae Young giving birth to a hand is HHH being okay for this long with not being champion and not so being completely psychotic he'd put a smile on even Ramsay Bolton's face. Oh well hopefully he wins the belt at Mania vs Austin and not Jericho. With all due respect to Jericho, that story needs to finish first.

- I want my Billy and Chuck calendar. Next episode of Smackdown they're gonna have a pose off with the divas! Puh leez girlfriend. You got nothing on Chuck's flowing locks and Billy's chiseled abs. Push them to the moon goddamn it!

- I am so legitimately happy Tazz and Spike are getting a run as tag champions. No. It's not that great. But these guys jobbed harder than anyone in the last year or more and every time they win I do a small clap because it's hard to think of anyone who deserves it more

- On that note. Honorable mention to Albert here. Guy busts his ass and doesn't get a lot back seemingly ever

- Jackie might be one of my all time favorites. She's not that great but she's very good for the quality of the time. She deserves one more run before she goes. Refereeing feels like a demotion in her case

- Literally waiting for Big Show to go heel again because he's lost in the shuffle. It's a damn shame. He's a good babyface

- It just occurred to me I might as well start a countdown to the Next Big Thing. I forgot Lesnar started the day after Mania. Holy shit this is going to be insane. I have rewatched his career many many times but this will have an entirely different context now

About a week out from No Way Out 2002. Here to acknowledge Taker as my Tribal Chief. My man tombstoned The Rock on a limo in cold blood. The people's champion might bring me to my feet in electricity every time he fights, but the Deadman brings me to applause every time he takes respect by brutalizing someone.

My GOD this is great heel work

Honorable mention that WWF has never been stronger with HHH, Rock and Austin all being fan favorites together for the first time

Random old story I re-learned over the weekend with the NFL Draft.

The Minnesota Vikings had some drama at the 1985 Draft. They had the 3rd overall pick and were targeting QB Bernie Kosar. They make a pre-draft deal to move up to #2 to guarantee they were getting Kosar; Bruce Smith was going #1 to Buffalo.

But then the Cleveland Browns found a loophole and told Kosar that he didn't have to declare for the normal draft and could wait until the supplemental draft a few months later. Buffalo would have the first pick there, so Cleveland worked out a deal for that pick instead. Minnesota was understandably furious and commish Pete Rozelle allowed Minnesota to try to recruit Kosar but he wanted to play for his hometown Browns.

Minnesota's next choice was offensive lineman Bill Fralic. But since Minnesota had a reputation for being cheap, Fralic didn't want to go there. A couple years before, John Elway threatened to play baseball instead of playing for the Baltimore Colts. Fralic employed a similar tactic, except instead of baseball he said he would become a pro wrestler.

Minnesota didn't call his bluff and traded the pick to Atlanta. Between the two trades, Minnesota dealt #3 and #30 for #4 and #60. So not quite ideal, but they did draft future HOFer Chris Doleman at least.

Yeah they were hot when they first debuted in WWE. It quickly went to crap though.

Problem was a few weeks into it Scott Hall's demons took over and was basically let go for not being in a condition to work which threw the plans upside down.

more match to go in No Way Out 2002

- God I hate guest referees and how much refs getting knocked out affects a match

- I know HHH is a fan favorite but from a karma standpoint, blowing out your quad, your wife faking a pregnancy and getting screwed out of your Mania shot after winning the Rumble is maybe 1/100 the humiliation and indignity he deserves. From a kayfabe standpoint I have probably never seen anyone less deserving of sympathy and I'm not giving it to him either. I legitimately have no idea what happens at Mania X8 and I almost don't want him having his title shot at all now despite the fact he's in my top 5 favorites with Kurt, Taker, Rock and Edge

- I legitimately expected HHH to kick out of that chair shot and Angle slam cuz "lol golden shovel"

- Thank God the Hardys are back together. That feud was so bad. It's like the only time they existed was on screen and it was the only time they could talk. And no amount of basic speech or understanding could somehow resolve the months of stupidity their team was subjected to. I'm shocked Matt and Jeff just didn't make grunting noises because that's about how much sense their dialogue made and how effective it was to one another. But breaking them up would've been terrible. Please make them or the APA champs one more time before Matt Hardy goes to Smackdown in the brand split. I'm a little worn out on Bubba and D-Von.

- Shut up J.R! Christian IS NOT having temper tantrums! He's "visibly frustrated" damn it! YOU go out there and do what he does!!

- Regal is on par with Eddie Guerrero right now with how dirty he is. I can't think of two guys less likely to feud and they are **NAILING** it. MY GOD give me more! Knucks on a pole was a brilliant idea

- I think I'm gonna cheer for EgoMania to retain the titles vs Stone Cold in this last match because another month with the belts is the least Jericho deserves for having to wait **THIS LONG** to be champion. Imagine having to feud with Chyna (and pull off fantastic matches btw) and your only reward is Trips punking you for the title not long after you win it

Alright so the NWO just cost Austin his shot at Mania. Jericho retains. I am reluctantly okay with this. If I had full control I think I'd have wanted Austin vs HHH for one last hurrah. But let's see what happens next.

I'm pleasantly surprised Nash didn't hurt himself getting out of bed that day
