Prepping for WM weekend with some classic viewing, just started Wrestlemania I

Mean Gene opened the show singing the Star Spangled Banner, and I never knew it was due to a celeb who was supposed to be there no-showing, Neither Gene or Vince would ever divulge who it was, makes me wonder who it could have been

Are you saying good choices because they were capable workers, or good choice because with faces like those a mask was an upgrade?

The suits also had more muscles on them so that was an improvement in physiques as well

The celeb announcers did not work so well at WM 2, Elvira was especially bad and seemed uninterested

Also forgot, or never knew that Lee Marshall was the ring announcer at the Los Angeles portion of the show

Skipped WM3 as I had seen it recently, so jumped to WM4, Bob Uecker is a huge improvement on the celebs from WM2, he and Ventura were a good combo

And Bret Hart destroys Bad New Brown's trophy for winning the battle royal, clearly he was a bitter and angry guy long before he ever met Goldberg

No one does bitter and angry like Bret Hart. Everytime I watch post DX HHH in my Attitude Era watch through I think of Bret doing it instead and my heart just stops in joy

A buddy of mine has a channel on his IPTV that just constantly plays WWF/E PPVs. It must not have anything to do with WWE though as Ive seen it showing Chris Benoit matches a couple times. It was kind of cool to see Benoit wrestling as I hadn't seen that in at least a decade. What he did was awful obviously but goddamn could that man wrestle.

He wasn't removed from anything on Peacock that I am aware of, the matches are still there, I think they had removed the ability to skip directly to his matches but otherwise he hasn't been erased

I did not realize that. Wonder what made them change their stance on him?
I think it's been quite a few years that they stopped editing him out of shows. I don't know why they stopped but I guess because he's featured so prominently that they couldn't ignore him anymore. Of course he doesn't get mentioned in anything live or anything post-produced.

Last I checked on the Network he was unlisted but not removed. So you could throw on Mania 20, and you'll see him in the main event, but there was no chapter skip to the match. Had to just let it play.

This is the non Peacock Canadian network though.

I've seen Benoit in literally everything in my Attitude Era watchthrough. If he was ever censored I've never seen it personally

On the watchthrough a few things

- The post Survivor Series 2001 writing makes (mostly) complete sense as of week 1

- Jericho has literally always gone too far in brawling. His ego turning him heel makes sense. It's just a shame his face run didn't last longer because he is genuinely one of the best. It's gonna probably be "How much cheating? Jericho: Yes" to win that undisputed title

- Angle whining no one is grateful for him saving the company is fantastic work. Idk I feel like you could have done that without him going to the alliance

- I know at some point Taker is gonna start getting hella mad and start taking "Respect" sooner than later and is either heel or tweener based on my vague recollection of late 2001-early 2002 . It's once again a character development that's consistent to the person.

- That is a hell of a lot of heel turns if my memory serves me right and Taker is about to switch as well. If my "balance" theory is correct after all I really hope this doesn't mean Austin is babyface again. The gimmick has lost it's shine. He was pushed too hard, gone for too long and he was the most genuinely annoying heel I think I can recall that isn't Vickie Guerrero. Maybe HHH is coming back soon? God that'll be great

Oh for Pete's sake. Ric Flair is half owner and
now Austin goes from probably the most annoying heel I've ever had to endure to superhero getting jumped by 5 guys in less than a week because we gotta have Vince vs Austin 9.0. Complete with Vince hugging all the alliance members.

What?

Nuh uh. I know it's Stone Cold but he's not coming back for me that quickly. Oh well, at least it's not DX 2000. I'll take Austin going back to miraculously resuscitating himself before being embalmed alive before I ever watch another predictable "Dogg and X-Pac win lol" match that I may as well just skip

BTW double turn conspiracy confirmed.

Crazy to think Brock's career is about to start in just over 4 months

On to WM V today

Rockin Robin was not so great on the America the Beautiful, clearly she is more comfortable wrestling in the ring, than she was singing

The Piper's Pit with Brother Love, Morton Downey, and Hot Rod was quite awkward

Everything from having Downey there to how he was during the event is weird.

Watching WM I, II, IV, and V these past few days have really opened my eyes and ears to how great Jesse Ventura and Gorilla were as a commentary team, I always loved Heenan and Gorilla, and for whatever reason never appreciated how great the Body was on color, and played off of Monsoon so well

My only criticism of Ventura has always been that he's too good on commentary. I like my heels to occasionally taking an L or getting made a fool of. Ventura was teflon though.
This is my problem with Corey Graves as well, but Graves doesn't have 1/6 the charisma Ventura had to excuse it most of the time. Graves will also switch from heel to babyface whenever it suits the kayfabe argument and that annoys me.

Almost to the end of 2001 and the beginning of my regular fandom of 2002-2006ish with frequent dabbling for as long as whatever girlfriend I had wasn't distracting me.

A few thoughts

-shit or get off the pot with Matt Hardy and the whole constant misunderstandings and miscues with Lita and now we got Jeff acting like a dumbass every match and Matt is somehow the bad guy. This is ridiculous gaslighting in real life and I hope this doesn't last long. Mattitude Hardy was amazing though

-WWF circa 2001 doesn't know how to write for Big Show as a babyface. It sucks because he's actually one of the better guys at it. Problem is they make him so over the top goofy that he goes from badass to pushover. Oh well, I have 2002 to 2003 to look forward to and that was *chef's kiss*
