Cap wise I think Skjei needs to come the other way actually. Both short and long term. So if you're going to bend over backwards by retaining on Chych (narrowing the market for Kessel considerably), that's probably the additional value that comes back in return. It lets them take a stab at keeping TDA.

Gardiner hasn't been put out to pasture, just multiple surgeries. If he wants to play they are in a $4m Ladd situation.

Chych (50%), Boyd for Skjei, Jarvis, 1st, Morrow = Roster player, bluechip, 1st, 2nd.

Carolina will probably push Necas into the deal instead. He is owed a raise and they need Jarvis' ELC + Nino walking to sign guys. Might be the one scenario where a team would really like the 50% on Chychrun.
Don’t they like Skjei? More than Cole? If Chychrun is 50%, Cole should work, right?

Aren’t they free of Gardiner due to LTIR? I honestly have no idea how all that works. But I think he’s perms LTIR. Either way, it works for me if it works for them. How about Bokk? He’s bordering on complete bust but BA drafted him and BA loved him once.
I saw something earlier this week that indicated we were targeting Necas with Carolina. I can’t recall source but suspect Friedman.

That xx expectation was off the charts nuts. Skjei is really good for them and He all but had him as a Cap dump?? There's Homer and then there's stupidity.

So, about yesterday…

Historically he hasn't been worth his cap hit. Just a run of the mill 2nd pair guy. Just look at their cap situation. He has to go almost regardless if they want to keep TDA. Trocheck is FA, Nino FA, Necas needs a bump, Kotk is just going to get term.

If they are going to stay in contention then they need to be rid of Gardiner as he absolutely cannot add $4m next year under any circumstance. Then if they're trading for Chychrun, Skjei needs to go as well.

They would be threading a needle either way to keep things moving along. But that's not BA's problem. If I was Carolina, I'd be bribing AZ to take Gardiner ASAP regardless of a Chychrun trade.

Skjei + Necas + 1st for Chych@50%. Then 2nd equivalent+ Gardiner for Boyd.

It’s a moot point with goaltending being in such shambles but the Devils sucked for so many years that they’ve built up an excess of young players. Where other teams have only one or two options, Devils realistically have three or more in a theoretical deal like this:

1. High-end D prospect : Smith or Mukhmadullin
2. Young NHL forward : Zacha, Sharangovich, Johnsson, or Kuokkanen
3. On the NHL cusp: Boqvist, Foote, Zetterlund, Clarke Thompson (inj.)
4. 2021 1st

Subban at 50% is probably another asset that could’ve been thrown in for Arizona to flip. There’s also prospects like Holtz and Gritsyuk that Devils would be hesitant to move, but I could see the justification. Daws and Schmid have also started their pro careers incredibly well in goal. I would think there’s some package there Arizona would like.

Goaltending is likely to sink the Devils into another bottom five finish they don’t need. Next year isn’t looking up either with how poor Blackwood has been in back to back injury plagued seasons without a capable backup. Plus you now have Bernier coming off hip surgery which never goes well for aging goalies. Even league average goaltending by Blackwood and this could’ve been something Fitzgerald seriously considered.
I'm fine with a 1st (top 2 protection), Smith, Sharangovich, Zetterlund.

I wouldn't go beyond top 2 protection because NJ could end up at 3 naturally, or 10.

I remember seeing that too but I can't find it. I think the names listed that we were rumored to like were Turcotte from LA, Necas from Carolina, and Lundell from Florida.

I’d rather have half a year of Cole than 2.5 years of Skjei at $5.3m/AAV

One of these is unlike the other 2.

CapFriendly Trade Machine tells me that this is compliant:

To CAR:
Jakob Chychrun
Travis Boyd

To ARI:
Ian Cole (Dump)
Jake Gardiner (LTIR)
Seth Jarvis
Scott Morrow
2023 CAR 1st

Boyd replaced Jarvis’ production for this season, alone. Cole is 6th among Carolina D in even-strength TOI/GP and while he does PK for them, it’s not on the top unit. He’s 2nd unit PK, which should be replaceable with the major upgrade Chychrun represents.

Wasn't it one of the hockey writers, (McKenzie?) who wrote that BA's ask was a 1st, a top prospect and an NHL ready player? As to whether that's accurate or not, who knows? Clearly there is little downside to just keeping Chychryun, so BA demands a premium. Regardless of what is posted here (or there) the market will be the measure. What BA gets is what he deserves to get for Chychrun, or Chychrun's simply more valuable to our team than to other teams.

As for me I would trade Chychrun straight up for Lundell.
BA doesn't want a hockey trade, he wants, or we have heard, he wants an Eichel type robbery trade. I don't think Chych will be traded unless BA gets multiple assets, and that is fine by me. As far as Lundell goes, this is his first year so we have to decide if he is this good, or is he taking other teams by surprise. Once teams get a book on him his play might change. With Florida, they are so deep with talent and so many players demand attention. Totally different in Coyoteville.

Exactly, hard to stick as a D first time up, has nothing to do with trading Chych.
As usual, a new toy can do nothing wrong and is treated like the next coming. He has played well, but I saw a few big mistakes last game, of what I watched.

Time to pump the brakes on Moser. He has only had a cup of coffee in the NHL.

...and that's why Chychrun is expendable while Moser's around.

So long as that 1st isn’t protected, this is interesting.

I mean now it would have to be protected. Probably would’ve anyways, with a conditional pick if it got pushed back a year I assume.

But if the Devils were playing over .500 hockey and looking at an 9th/10th finish in the East. I think there certainly could’ve been a solid deal put together.

No interest in that. I’m not willing to watch the 6th overall pick in 6 months turn into the 18th overall pick in 18 months.
