It's the what have you done for me lately mentality. Chych is getting a similar treatment. Every year there are players that have a bad stretch or season, then they come back and are fine the next year or after the Christmas break. Chych is slumping, he's an animal physically but I get the sense he lacks mental fortitude. Put him on a good team where he's the 2/3/4 guy and you have a killer. He's a top pairing guy in skill, maybe not so much in mind.
Nobody hones their body like Chych w/o having mental fortitude.

The Rangers offer including kravtsov is interesting. Its other pieces that are up to debate but I think Kravtsov would be a good 2nd piece.

Lots of people are jacked and skilled but are mental midgets. My buddy who played baseball was a mental midget. Talented and a gym rat, game time showed up and he'd get into his own head. Maybe not MLB talented but still a cut above many, his head was his own worst enemy.
I'll acknowledge that, but don't think it fits Chychrun. Although his attempt to do too much and not wait for the proper opportunity last night, begs different.

I think they have done a lot of assessing. Based on Chychrun's play this year they may no longer see him as the guy to build around. They could have thought he was ready to carry the load for this team but that obviously hasn't happened. Keller has been able to step up but we haven't seen that yet from Chychrun.

I don't see this as a good place for him to be for his continued development. Don't get me wrong, he will absolutely thrive in a better environment, but he won't see that here for a while. At that point he will be due his raise and may want to test the market after spending his last few years here in a rebuild.

@Jamieh - since you’re a Leafs fan, I’d like to ask you about Sandin. This goes for anyone who watches the Leafs.

So, I’m familiar with Sandin. I watched him as an amateur and I’ve seen some NHL games. I like him alright. He’s not tall, but he’s plays a pretty hard game for his size. He’s no wimp and he uses his body to gain an advantage. I really like his positioning. He’s a smart player. Great at being in the right spot. And I like his vision and passing.

He honestly reminds me of the player Goligoski has been recently. The mid-30s version of Goligoski. But not nearly as much of a soft wimp. And also not near as good a skater. So like Goligoski but with heavier boots and actually has a pair of balls.

I’m confident in all of that. I think I’m right about all of that. To me, Sandin is a tougher, slower version of what Goligoski has evolved into in recent years (not the younger version of Goligoski who was a different player altogether - was just a poor man’s Yandle back in the day).

Here’s where I’m confused and need help: Why is he given so many PP minutes and why are all of his underlying PP numbers so incredibly horrendous? Seems like he’s PP kryptonite. And yet he’s gets tons of chances. What the heck is the story there?!?!?

I think Keefe is really trying to see what he can be. And with no real PP threat on the backend why not. He is very confident, moves the puck well, and is willing to shoot. I kinda like the player but he's looking more top 4 than top 2 for potential. The reality is he's getting hope minutes on PP with Rielly really being the only other D worth considering as Brodie is needed more on PK.

The numbers show that Sandin gets more PP minutes than any D outside of Rielly. But it looks like he Rielly (or perhaps it’s just Reilly’s unit) is like 2-4x more effective. Is the 2nd unit PP up there just really horrible compared to the 1st unit?

Ist PP unit is normally AM, Nylander, and Tavares up front with Marner and Rielly on backend.

Unit 2 is Spezza, Bunting, and filled in with whoever is hot and playing.

Yeah there is a massive talent drop-off from 1 to 2.

My guess is that Janis Moser has done so well that they figure that Chychrun is more valuable as a trade asset than a keeper. And let's not beat around the bush - you don't get many opportunities to rake in a haul like Chychrun would command very often.

Had the same thought for the past couple of weeks. Moser makes it easier to put Chychrun out there.

Reliable source is telling me the Kings and Rangers are out on the Chychrun frenzy. Panthers, Bruins, Canes are neck and neck. (Well, neck and neck and neck, I guess.)

Set a short-term deadline for potential suitors to make their best and final offer, say February 2nd and be done with it.

Waiting is dangerous as Chychrun has a history of injuries, so unless they sit him move him now. His current play on the ice also not helping his trade value.

How can this be? How can the Panthers (without Lundell) and the Bruins compete with the Canes?

The Lundell-less Panthers pools sucks. The Bruins is maybe the worst in the league. Then you have the Canes, which should be the front-runners if Jarvis is in there. I guess maybe is out, then it makes sense. They’re all equally unappealing if Lundell and Jarvis are out.

Giving up an elite prospect such as Fabian Lysell isn't a good idea, but if you could acquire a defenseman of Chychrun's caliber in a deal involving Jeremy Swayman or Mason Lohrei, then Boston absolutely needs to consider it. Giving up a top prospect like Swayman or Lohrei is easier when the player you're getting in return is a young star with term left on his contract.
Even if they ditched the “or” and replaced it with an “and” PLUS adding a 1st round pick, that’s not even a little appealing.

Swayman+Lohrei+1st for Chychrun makes the Coyotes much worse. That’s terrible value.

Carolina is exciting because it makes me think of Jarvis.

If Lundell is off the table, then the Panthers and Bruins being in the mix is a TERRIBLE sign for us. Boston being there fills me with dread. They literally don’t have an appealing package.

Florida and Boston being there means we want a goalie. The primary return for Jakob Chychrun is about to be freaking Knight or Swayman.

Swayman wasn't shy about how he felt about being sent down when Rask re-signed, so a Boston deal wouldn't shock me.

I hate goalie prospects. But if I could choose just one goalie prospect in all the world, it would be Swayman. JFJR loves Frederic, right? I guess BA would, too, as he’s a St Louis kid. I don’t personally love the upside on Frederic. Seems like a 3rd or 4th liner to me. Vaakanainen strikes me a Plandowski type, even though I don’t think much of him. Jake DeBrusk is rumored to actually have trade value (which surprises me).

Is DeBrusk, Vaakanainen, Frederic, Swayman and a 1st for Chychrun and depth forward or two a deal that both sides would do?

I would probably vomit.

I'd immediately be on the fire BA train.

Yeah I'm starting to prepare myself for massive disappointment.. BA isn't getting the offers he wants and there isn't really a way to get these teams to increase their offers, they'll just walk away.

I'd say his mental fortitude is amazing. He's come back from 2 knee injuries already. Last season there were games he willed the team to victory. I'm sure he's dealing with the rumors edging in on everything he does and once there's clarity to whether he's going or staying he'll revert back to form. I think he's poised enough to handle a few more seasons of the team being down honestly, and I have to think with the way Tourigny has them competing, he won't think they will wallow at the bottom for super long.

It’s gonna suck. It’s gonna be Swayman or Knight, a very late first, and a prospect/young player none of us have any faith in.
Better than waiting for another Chychrun injury to ruin his trade value
