I agree with a lot of what you’re saying, but giving up Lundell who’s already playing like a guy that’s been in the league for years getting PK minutes and all and is essentially a mini Barkov, that’s just too much to give up to fill a hole that could be filled by a rental. A guy like Giordano or something could be a more reasonable trade for us as to not give up as many assets for a franchise that’s already suffered for almost 30 years. At this point I’m ok with being patient and if we have a couple of heartbreaks like Tampa and Caps had in the playoffs to finally reach the promise land I’m ok with that. Chych and Ekblad are very much alike, we need a responsible no nonsense shutdown D with experience for a deep playoff run, that’s why a rental like Gio as I said makes more sense.
Good point.:thumbu:

Just out of curiosity, what would the Coyotes be looking for from the Devils? Fitzgerald has already gone all in on Hughes, would be a huge risk but the reward would be a solid D core for a few years.

Smith or Mukhmadullin could realistically be on the table. Would be a risky move, but Devils could potentially put a protected 2021 1st up as well (maybe top 5 protected).

Devils have an excess of forwards at the moment as well. I would only say Hughes, Hischier, Bratt, and Mercer would be completely off the table. Zacha, Johnsson, and Kuokkanen could all get moved. Wood or Sharangovich are possible as well. Holtz would be a hard sell at this point, but not impossible. There’s also a glut of AHL/NHL guys that need opportunity like Boqvist, Zetterlund, Thompson (inj.), and Foote. They’re more like throw-ins but could thrive with opportunity.
Given GMBA's ask of a 1st, high end prospect and a young roster player the ask from NJ would be something like this:

NJ 2022 First (top 3 or top 5 protected) reverts to an unprotected 2023 First if not used in 2022
Stillman - his dad is a Coyote assistant coach
Smith

I watch most Devil games and think that ask would be fair, but chances are another team might beat it....the big difference is the Devil 1st would potentially be a top 10 pick where a team like the Rangers and Panthers would be late 20's/early 30's.

Chychrun would a PERFECT fit with New Jersey.

Insider Trading:

- Toronto has kicked tires on Chyc, but seems like a tough fit. LA, FLA, BOS, ANA, STL all teams considered to have strong interest. Dreger confirms there are 4 components needed in this trade, and says Armstrong has time on his side so will take his time to wait on the best offer.

I guess the four components are:

1. Tuch
2. Krebs
3. 1st
4. 2nd

???? :dunno: ????

Several teams going hard at it, so its not slowing down. Florida is there, but Friedman is not convinced they'll part with Lundell. Columbus, Anaheim, Boston, Carolina are there. Colorado is lurking around as well. Kings and Rangers are out for now. This is moving to the final stages.

Also, the coyotes prefer to keep Crouse.

Finally beat @RABBIT to one of these recaps lol

You know, I hadn't thought of the rental angle, that's a good point. Gio's a UFA next summer and his cap hit is nuts, but SEA should be able to retain I would think, esp if you give them a high draft pick and / or a B level prospect.

But you know what -- if you're looking the rental route why not trade for Chara? He's still averaging over 18 mins a night at age 44 in NYI (?!?!?!) and unlike Gio he's been on more than his share of deep cup runs. Definitely something in those Boston Cream pies that lets people like him and Brady play until they're 253 years old. Also just looked it up and the big Z has played in exactly 200 NHL playoff games wtf.

Anyway, completely agree there are a few ok B options (Chara, Gio, Ben Chiarot, McNabb etc) if Chych's asking price is too high. But, Chych is amazing and acquiring him would change the entire complexion of the org I think for the better even if it does cost a good younger player like Lundell. My opinion in uninformed though, I haven't really seen Lundell play. Either way thx for the discussion, appreciate your insight here

I actually like this package quite bit. I'd probably switch Ty Smith out for Shakir Mukhamadullin though.

How is BOS still in this?! You know Swayman has to be part of it, which makes me dizzy thinking about a trade with them.

Carolina is interesting. Jarvis could be a great piece. They don't have their 1st obviously so I'd imagine the main piece coming back would have to carry some quality

No protection. If they win a third time in five years that’s just tough shit for them.

An interesting point in this 32 thoughts in regards to the face-off debate that comes up regularly here. We might not know which face-offs are taken but teams surely do. The analytics fans rank about are not the analytics teams talk about.

15. Gorgone Swartz started with the Devils under the late Max McNab. “I remember walking through the team office with a mix of excitement and sheer terror,” she laughed. “To say I was fortunate to learn from him is an understatement.” She said New Jersey and Washington were the first two teams to start tracking statistics by computer -- time on ice was the big one, but also face-offs, hits, giveaways. The original advanced stats, really. McNab was really big on faceoffs, wanting to know results all over the ice and at different strengths. “He gave all of my reports to (Lou Lamoriello). When I finished my internship, I asked (Lamoriello) for a recommendation. He said, ‘Absolutely, but I’d like to offer you a job here.’”

32 Thoughts: A lesson to learn
5. Not available: Arizona’s Karel Vejmelka, who’s having an excellent rookie season out of nowhere. The Coyotes are starting extension talks. He’s two years from unrestricted free agency.

6. It’s grind time for Jakob Chychrun. There are several teams going hard at this. Florida is there for sure, but I'm not convinced they want to move Anton Lundell. I think Columbus is there. Anaheim, Boston and Carolina have been there. I suspect Colorado is in stealth mode. No doubt there are others. My sense is Los Angeles and the Rangers are out for now -- weird stuff happens, you never know. But we’re past the fact-finding stage and we’ll see when it closes.

8. Arizona, by the way, has indicated it prefers to keep Lawson Crouse.

They're out probably because all they were offering was Kravtsov/1st and some minor pieces and BA is holding out for Schneider/Othmann, which is what he should do...and Kings are out probably because they only want to give up Turcotte and again, BA is holding out for their better prospects.

Stick to your guns BA...if price is not met we get to keep Chychrun, which is a win in my book anyway.

I agree we can use Chara or some other experienced vet and not have to give much.
I just think Lundell is untouchable. To sum him up:

Anton Lundell, F, Florida Panthers: The No. 12 pick in the 2020 NHL Draft has been effective in all areas of the ice, scoring 12 points (five goals, seven assists). He leads NHL rookies with 348 face-offs taken and 159 wins (45.7 percent) playing on a line with left wing Carter Verhaeghe and right wing Anthony Duclair. Lundell averages 16:28 of ice time in 25 games and leads first-year players in even-strength face-off wins (135), defensive-zone wins (172) and shorthanded wins (19). He ranks first among rookie centers with 26 blocked shots and 28 takeaways and is tied for second in penalties drawn (seven).
"He doesn't look like he's a rookie," Florida goalie Sergei Bobrovsky said. "He's very smart. He looks like he plays an experienced game. On the penalty kill, he's been great, and he's been great on the face-offs. He's been a great addition to our team. He's got so much in front of him."

Rookie Watch: Lundell, Sillinger among best at face-offs

The sort of things he’s doing, I mean, it’s what makes you think, dang, this is the type of kid you want to keep and is going to help you win a cup. You don’t trade this type of rookie away.

Knight on the other hand, as much as I like him, goalies is something I’m not to worried about, I mean you’ve seen last couple of years guys come out of nowhere to win cups like Cam Ward, Antii Niemi, Murray, Bennington.

thank you, likewise and I truly wish nothing but success to the Coyotes franchise, you guys deserve better. Nothing best of luck to the Yotes!

You guys are crazy with your asks IMHO.

I want a rainbow unicorn...

I get it, ask for the moon and if some schmuck gives it to ya, all the better....and if not, you have a cost controlled player.

But the asks are ridiculous, you have to admit.
Go yell at Marek and Friedman for their reports on the asking price.

I wouldn’t trade Chychrun to the Devils with all those pieces listed as untouchable. You can’t say all the assets you actually like and care about are untouchable and only make the ones you’re a little worried about available. Why would Arizona trade an absolute stud young blueliner on a sweetheart deal for your leftovers?

If you want to actually have a shot, you’ll ditch the idea of Top5 protection on that pick. You can put Top2 protection on it, but if the pick slides a year because you win the lottery, Arizona needs to be paid HANDSOMELY for the inconvenience. I’m talking about your 2nd this year AND your 2nd next year if that pick sides because you guys win a lottery. Not going to watch an 8th overall this year become an 18th overall next year, without proper compensation.

Honestly, that’s needlessly complicating things. You’ve already taken two centers 1st overall in the last few years. You don’t need to do it again. Wright and Cooley are going to go 1st and 2nd. That’s not even what New Jersey needs.

If you want Chychrun, I want Ty Smith and your unprotected 1st and then we can talk about what else needs to be involved.

This happens in every thread. Yes you have to give to get. However, Devils have built up such an excess of young players with numerous high picks that there’s a deal to be made excluding the players I mentioned.

Devils can’t really justify the optics of not lottery protecting their first with how big of a train wreck their goaltending is right now, even though I agree they don’t really need another high pick. We’re kind of at the point where the current core is locked up to long term deals, they’re either going to be the answer, or the Devils are screwed anyways for the next three/four years.

To be honest, Zacha + Smith or Mukhamdullin + 2021 1st is what I was thinking as a base structure. Then fill the pieces around there. Hell I could even see Subban at 50% being added to a deal like this to let Arizona flip him too.

I doubt it happens, but curious to see if Arizona fans think there’s potentially a deal there.

No interest in Zacha. And the rest of the package is so underwhelming that there’s zero chance I’d do it with lottery protection.

I get sentiment on Lundell. What assets does florida have to make a Chychrun trade worthwhile? They apparently want this player badly. So what else is there cause I’m not seeing it in their prospect group. Is there best offer going to be essentially all futures? I don’t know if we can do that.
