He's played well in his few shifts the past few games aside from his one bad defensive mistake. He's really brought up the play of our "4th" line. He's using his body more (he nailed someone last game) and had a few shots where I said to myself "oh **** that was close."

It's coming. Unfortunately he's not gonna get the ice time in the playoffs to do it on a shift-by-shift basis. Some of you people are underestimating how hard it is to make a difference when you're not playing a lot. It's hard to get into a groove.

Average of 10 minutes of ice time per game, 23 games, 230 minutes this season. How much longer does he need?

Stating a fact is not an excuse.

OK, well, you're right...he didnt play 23 consecutive games.

...thats because he sucked for most of the year.

To be clear, I think he should be in the lineup -- playing very sheltered/limited even strength minutes with powerplay time because, well, anything different on the PP would be a good thing.

Still a defensive liability, but he made some good plays, big hits, assist on the GWG. :sarcasm:
Maybe that get's him going a little, maybe not. He'll be fine in the long run, he just had a rough time in this shortened season.

He just needs to play. Take the kid glove off, let him play 12-14 minutes a night. He is going to make mistakes, live with em. He will create chances and grow his defensive game as he plays.

Obviously not talking about the playoffs, but next season.

This is probably the best analysis of kreider. In the longrun he will be fine because he has teh gifts that not every player has. He is only 22 and has never played a full season of hockey. Im excited to see what he does next year in a normal 82 game schedule. I still think he can help them now IF they use him in the right situations. I think he can be a good PP player because of his size and shot in front of the net

On what basis is Kreider not NHL caliber right now? Making the occasional defensive mistake doesn't automatically render a player not NHL caliber. All that means is that you need to know when and when not to use him. Giving him the occasional even strength shift plus some powerplay time could help us out immensely.

On what basis is he? He doesn't provide offensive creativity, is terrible defensively and hasn't used his speed at all this season. You can have a 6'5" Apolo Ohno on skates, but he'll be useless he does something with the puck. Kreider does nothing to warrant PP time or more minutes.

Kershaw, you and I normally see eye to eye, but did you watch game 7?? Kreider`s burst up the ice and his drop back pass to Asham created the first goal.

I don't think he uses it consistently. He's like Gaborik, except without the hockey smarts, shot accuracy, playmaking ability and positioning skills. Right now, he is not a better player than Jason Chimera, a 4th line player on the Caps for the majority of the year.

This is fair.

He`s also 22 years old. A LOT of first rounders never make the NHL, EVER. I`m willing to be patient with Kreider given his talents. I think he would have been better served coming to Atlantic Canada and playing in the Q (Saint John held his rights IIRC). But that`s just my opinion.

Kreider has a pretty good shot. Even though he hasnt scored much they are quality shots most of the time. He has been using his speed ans body much more. I still think he needs to play with someone who can set him up more. Him and stepan have great chemistry so hopefully next year we will see more of them

Disagree about PP time. Not being one of the current PP regulars makes someone eligible for PP time for me, at this point

No one is doubting his physical gifts. Its his brain Im worried about.

The kid is a rookie who tried to come play his first NHL season with no training camp. I think your just looking to be the one guy who if Kreider doesnt make it can say "I've said it since the beginning this kid is no good". Give the kid a break. Not every rookie comes in and lights it up. He had a stellar playoffs and that got everyone's hopes up. The kid will be a solid NHL player for this team.

No, it doesn't. When you mix it with little offensive contributions though...

I thought he played a strong game yesterday, though.

Yeah, first of all, I like the look of him to in G7.

But, people are asking why he is "not" an NHLer, the problem looking at the entire season is the opposite. Why should he play?

He has played all year, and more or less contributed zip. Why go out of our way to get -- what exactly? Zero offense? Zero physical play? Zero forechecking ability?

He played a few shifts in G7 where he had an explosive edge to his game. He will get chances and needs to build on that. But it's stupidity to try to force someone into a bigger role who hasn't shown more despite being given a ton of chances THIS season.

The way he looked in G7, I wouldn't rule out that he caught up physically after some time of, and actually could be ready to give more. But the natural order still is to take it step by step...

You think wrong.

What benefit do I get, as a Ranger fan, if Chris Kreider busts? I realize hes young, I realize this was a weird season, but the fact hes shown close to nothing all year is alarming.

I woldnt say he has shown nothing. he has been inconsistent but considering that he has bounced around like a pinball in a shortened season i think its fair to cut the kid some slack. If it was an 82 game season instead of 48 i have a feeling it might have been different.

Inconsistent? No. Hes been consistently bad. 19 shots in 23 games this year. 230 minutes of ice-time. Even if you have **** linemates that ENTIRE time, which he didnt, thats still a huge red flag that hes not being productive on the ice whatsoever. The first step here is admitting theres a problem.

I like the way he played in game 7 minus the terrible read on Green's partial breakway. Maybe he can use that as a building block.

If a lack of stability was the cause of his failures, you would expect that the period of time during the lockout would be his most productive time. He had 12 points in 33 games in that stretch, however. He ended it with 2 points in his last 19 games.
