How exactly was he all "brawn" as a 17 year old playing prep hockey?
I think scouts looked at his frame , stride . Not anywhere close to being a bust but not anywhere close to being a consistent pro.
I think the NYR system in general has him down . Watching the wings and Hawks play this kid would probably flourish with all those players with such poise with the puck .

Anisimov got pasted like this once a week and always got up and made plays . Difference being AA was a heady player who thought the game in all 3 zones well. TORTS , assessment of CK is spot on kid has a lot to learn a out being a pro and the game . I always feared he was mentally weak when he repeatedly felt he wasn't ready for pro hockey and wanted the sheltered environs of college. A degree is nice but lets be real if you dream of being a pro hockey player what better route to take then pro hockey. He's two years away if he's ready at all kid is showing bust potential . Reminds me a lot o a Ryan Leaf or Drew Henson . Can't miss size and appeal but missing something .

Mentally weak because he wanted to develop his game? I'm sure the kid knew he was a ways away mentally, and wanted to learn the game a little better. I don't know if the college route was the best plan for him, but I doubt he was scared. He's a hockey player with the physical tools, but has probably been the best player on every team he's ever played for. That's a hard thing for pro athletes in any sport, how do you go from being your team's best player to just another role player? I'm sure Kreider has been trying hard to not make the big time mistake, to be what Torts wants him to be, but isn't playing HIS game.

I DO agree that Kreider stayed one here too long in college, because you could tell by the end of his career there he was almost apathetic towards the game. Watching his junior season he seemed like he knew he was the best player on the ice most nights, and to me it almost seemed like he was bored playing at that level. When he got to the Rangers for the playoffs he was at an emotional high and probably came in feeling like such a superstar that it propelled him to an incredible playoff run.

Also consider conditioning/adjusting to life as a pro. Guys like JT Miller and some of the other young Rangers who went the CHL route were playing long seasons with crazy traveling schedules for years before they even got drafted. Kreider hasn't experienced that until this year. Yeah, for Hagelin and some other guys the adjustment was immediate, but for a lot of college guys it doesn't come as easily.

Talking Ryan Leaf comparisons is just insane dude. Not even close. In 5 year Kreider will be one of this team's best forwards. Right now, he's a young kid who needs to adjust to pro hockey.

"He's got it all....but..."
Fits many guys who get drafted.

I do not think he expected the physical nature of the day to day NHL game. He shut down. He looked clueless. Completely overwhelmed.
He is Nazim Kadri 2 years ago.

Maybe, but who knows now if Torts will even give him a better chance in camp. I fear for his confidence, being shuffled between the A and big club every now and then.
If he can't handle being called up to the NHL and being sent down at times to the AHL in his first professional season then he will have difficulties being a professional hockey player.

Kreider just scored on the PP to put the Whale up 2-0 against Bridgeport. Has 2 goals in (I believe) as many games since being returned to the AHL.

Like I said, he is good around the net, in the slot, and on the rush.

If he gets the puck in those situations, high probability he's scoring a goal.

He needs to keep his game simple. When he tries to be fancy he gets away from the parts of his game that make him successful. Similar to Dubinsky in that regard.

I agree in theory, but I think its too early to make a Dubinsky comparison.

Dubinsky usually made stupid decisions with the puck. So far this season, Kreider has rarely had the puck.

Not really comparing his play to Dubinsky, just that he has a tendency to do the same thing Dubinksy had problems with. He did in college as well. However, the diffeence is that Kreider is 21. Dubinsky is still doing the same thing at 27-28. He just never grew into consistency.

Kreider need to be more physically engaged in games. Not looking for thunderous hits, just want him to use his imposing framre more than he has. He's got to start seperating opposing players from pucks and he's GOT to start going to the net with physical authority.

He plays to timid a game for someone that big. To much like Brian Boyle. Very timid

This is not normal for his play. Let him develop and get some confidence. When he gets his game together the Rangers will have an Erik Cole-type on their hands. Power-forwards take longer to develop.

Kreider has all the physical tools right now except the right mind set. When he gets that I think he will be a very effective if not great player.

Disagree. Cautious is the word I would use to describe him. Not anywhere near as hard on the puck as he needs to be. He's afraid of making mistakes. He'll get it. Too many good coaches and he's a smart kid. He understands results and what it takes to get them. Last night being a good example. He'll figure it out.

Yep.

Timid? Cautious? Whats the difference? Its just semantics.

Bottom line is he needs to play harder and tougher. This "hes not that type of player" stuff isnt going to fly in the NHL, especially with Torts.

In a street fight there is a difference. That's what hockey comes down to. Physically, I'd doubt Kreider gets intimidated. He's cautious when it comes to the feel and flow of the game.

He needs to do what he did last night all the time. Aggressively forechecking the opponent. Force them into a mistake. Then use your size, speed and shot to take advantage. Very few players have had the physical gifts of Kreider. He needs to learn to maximize those gifts. All in his head.

His brain needs to catch up pure and simple. If you don't know where to go the speed can't take you there and you can't use your strength.

Also it's important to note he came out after his junior year correct (Maybe Im wrong I remember he took credits to graduate early or was that just early in terms of being able to join us in the PO?) McD and Hag would have still been in college this year if they were CK. Both of them would have taken not only this year in college but a portion of NEXT year in the AHL. CK is right on track. At the very least like I've said before many prospects have needed some AHL/CHL seasoning first after a big league stint including Staal, Dubs, Anisimov, McD, MDZ, Cally, Hags, etc

McDonagh came out after his junior year as well. Stepan came out after his sophomore.
