Kreider hasn’t been able to “put it altogether” in NY. Wouldn’t be surprised he breaks out like Kovalev did when he leaves. Kreider with a top top center could do that. He’s a nice piece to have but not at the rumored 6-7.5 mill per.

Kreider has "put it together" just fine in NY. He's a legitimate first line power forward that skates like a gazelle. He was projected as a late first rounder. Drafted as a late first rounder. And hes played 510 games in a NYR sweater, and has solidified himself on the NYR top line with a top center in Mika.

My point? Rangers really need to think long and hard at what the return looks like, because i'm not convinced the club can win in the next couple of seasons without #20 up in the top 6.

If he stays...who goes to pay for him and what does our top 6 look like with him as a top 6 piece in the next 3 -4 seasons ? Gorton has that advantage over us as he likely has an idea or a plan B for Tony and maybe the King .

I’m not disagreeing with most of what you’re saying. I’ve always felt Kreider leaves me wanting more. He has it in him to be IMO a 70-85 pt player. I don’t think he’ll reach that in NY. Hence my comparison to Kovy. Kovy won a cup in NY with his mustard stained jersey so many people would say he was a success too.

But that’s simply not realistic. He isn’t a 70-85 point player...not many are. He is a guy who is gonna give you 25-30 goals, open space for others, be one of the best players in front of the net in the NHL,etc. You should be happy with that. Like I said many times after the 2012 playoffs many fans got this crazy idea that he was suppose to be this 40 goal scorer and anything less was a “disappointment”. He was not the top pick....he was 19th. He has been a very good top 6 player for his whole career, become a better overall player, and was a very good playoff performer. For a 19th overall pick that’s a HUGE success for us

I want to keep him. I'd clear Strome,Butcher, Georgiev and Fast and even Howden if possible. But I would just pay Kreider. I think that the worst thing he can lose is his speed during the contract length but he is not going to lose his tenacity of dirty play in front of the net. He is a workout freak and he is starting to score more thanks to Zibs explosion and he presence of Panarin. Imagine when Kakko catches up. That is valuable. He is so valuable to this team and should be the captain. I say resign him.

I honestly don’t think he is gonna lose his speed. I think some are paranoid about that. Guy is a physical specimen who keeps himself in great shape. Maybe in his late 30s but I think for the length of the contract his speed will be there. Kreider is also smart about when to go “all out” with the speed in order to keep himself fresh instead of overdoing it and possibly causing injuries. Unfortunately some say it’s lazy but it’s actually smart. His net presence alone has been one of the best in the league for years and that won’t decline either

I'm in the keep him camp. Going forward this team needs one guy in the room who has been there, and to act as the new "locker room" presence once Hank retires or leaves. That, and I don't think he will age as badly as people think. He has exceptional chemistry with Zibanejad, who is now a legitimate first line center. I think playing together and keeping them together will help offset the age factor, especially when Kreider does lose a step. Also, Kreider losing a "step" is not like other players "losing a step" around the league.

The term is not ideal, but Kreider/Trouba will likely be the only guys the next few years who have money on the salary cap after they turn 30.

Has anyone considered the possibility that they could just restructure his contract so that he can stay and not be such a big cap hit?

Hmm, Chris knows this is his likely his one and only big payday so does he:

Take 6.5 for 6 years with the Rangers
Or 7.5M for 7 years on the market.

So is he going to lose out on 12+ million dollars to stay with the Rangers? Not a change and neither would anyone here. Bye Chris.

And cool IF he does love it here so much, then after we trade him for parts to continue help the rebuild, he can elect to sign with us again in July. Just like Zucc did.
I would to stay on a team I really enjoyed being on :dunno:

It wouldn't be this team though.

Yeah. Physically he’s a bit Gartner-esque.

Like $4.5x8 or something? I don’t see it. Doesn’t really make sense for him either. If he takes a 5 year deal with the ranger that takes him to 34yo. He should still be able to get a decent deals - like 4-5m per - after that for 2 or 3 seasons. Why give up money on the front end?

Fine by me. I don't see him as a core piece so if the options are trade him OR sign him long term I take the trade 10/10 times in a cap world

People clamoring for him to be resigned after he goes on this hot streak he's been on have blinders on for all the times he disappears for stretches.

he’ll be 29 years old in April and is playing for a contract. He’s gone IMO

What are the Rangers winning with #20 in the top 6 in the next couple of seasons?

I love Kreider, but he is about to turn 29. I really don’t want to see a 35 or 36 year old Kreider in a rangers sweater

yes, because Kreiders play is what’s holding this team back. What are they winning with the 29th pick and b prospect they get for him in the next couple of seasons?
This. If it was a really good prospect I could understand but it won’t be for a rental
