Well. Hes a pending UFA and unsigned and we probably wont make the playoffs. Trade him for assets and if we can sign him in july then great. Everyone has a number tho and I wouldn't go over the top on a 29 power forward even though I think his speed separates him from the power forwards who decline at his age.

It’s going to be interesting to see if the other factors you’ve hinted at are at play. If there is an agreement, then it’s going to be the first step in quite a few moves/events.

GM Edge’s final offer for Kreider - 6x6 with a full movement clause.

Not a penny more. Sign it and we move forward together and you have the chance to retire a Ranger. Want the extra money, we wish you well. You should probably expect an update within the next 48 hours.

Kreider says he loves being a Ranger and there are reports he doesn’t want to play anywhere else. I’m willing to give him the opportunity, but I need him to help us out.

If he can make that happen, then I am willing to give him the option to veto any move that would put him somewhere else.

So, the NMC is the carrot to keep the AAV down? What if he counters with $6.5 million per for 6 years, but only takes an NMC for the first three years?

No deal. His age will give him a virtual NMC in the final three years anyway. That’s not an incentive for me.

I would encourage him to circle back with me after he checks out the market in July and maybe we can talk.

a NMC on a contract like that is just a formality...like @Edge said the age and $$ acts like a virtual NMC. everyone likes to act like staal is only still here because of his NMC. but reality is he makes too much $$ to bury in the minors...and when was the last time a player was asked to waive in a deal and said no?

The issue is he isn't on for stretches at a time. If we could get the CK we've seen the last few weeks for most of the season it would be a different story.

Erm...if you were getting the CK for the last 23 games (24 pts) for a whole season then it definitely would be a different story because his market rate would jump up to 9+ mil a year.

I just think if you have a guy that's so important to the lineup and the team, you try and find a way to keep him. Within reason. As others have said a late first round pick and bottom 6 prospect is just a blah return for him. And they for sure take a step back next season. With all this said, I still think he'll get traded in the next three weeks.
