They have about 1/3 of the team to sign with about 1/4 of the cap remaining.

Sure. 20.8 million for A tandem goalie (2.8) 3rd pair D (1.5)

That gives you 18.5 for 2 forwards and 2 top 4 D. That’s plenty

Could also gain cap by moving out Kampf/jarnkrok and bring in Cowan/robby.

That would give you 20.5 ish for 4 players.
That’s easy work.

actually its only 3 RFA's to resign (worth resigning), and a backup goalie that are the only outstanding signings 'needed' other than defense.

a top 2 F would be nice, but isnt needed, and bottom 6ers are always available cheap, or the Leafs can finally inject some youth again.

Yet, Bertuzzi, Domi, Robertson, Dewar, and Gregor aren't signed upfront.

Reaves won't be a regular next season if I had to bet.

How exactly do you only need 2 forwards when there's 5 forwards who are unsigned that all played 55+ games last season?

You still need to have players in the press box
Bert, I dont want back, Gergor didnt earn a contract and should also walk, Lil is also an RFA, so, they have 3 RFA to resign. Domi is a luxury that if they can sign on a team friendly deal, else let him walk too, as there are many that can fill his role available, and cheaper too.

Leafs need to inject some youth, and let them develop on the job, not sign a bunch of filler players to hold them back, and some need a bigger role too.

Knies - Matthews - Marner
McMann - Tavares - Nylander
Jarnkrok - Holmberg - Robertson
Dewar - Kampf - Reeves
...this is with only resigning the 2 F rfa and not bringing in any homegrown talent, and considering Minten made the team out of camp last year, and Cowan cant go to the AHL, he should at least get the 9 game look.
so, if anything, we need to move out a vet or 2 to make room for the youth coming up, and the Leafs always sign players to cheap one-year show me deals.

Matt Roy is the guy I want to target. He's getting lost in all this defenseman hoopla. He's a very good defenseman who is also a good hybrid of Puck Movement and physicality.

Would be ideal with Reilly

2 top 4 D in FA is 5+ easy this year. The cap going up is going to balloon those top deals. Montour is going to get 7+, maybe you get a second pair guy like Walker or Roy for 5.5 over 6. But you aren't getting a true top 4 for under 5. Look at last year, guys like Clifton (bottom 4 defensemen) received 3. Holl got over 3...

Two wingers who are true middle six options are likely 4ish each. More if you want a guy who has shown ability in the top 6 for more than a spell. That's going to run 5+ easy.

If you want quality in your lineup, the Leafs do not have enough at 20M currently to improve their team from this past year to next season. They can make trades, but purely FA is a dream.

Are they really going to run into next year with Reaves as a regular? Or Woll with a potential spot starter in net? Thats a recipe for a first round exit. They are looking more and more like the lightning but without the cups success prior. A team who has a core, but absolutely no depth and little prospect pool to supplement

Every team is talking to free agents now, unless you actually believe that multi million dollar contracts that are signed 15 minutes after free agency opens actually take 15 minutes to put together.

If that's the case, I have several bridges in Japan to sell you

Which ones do you own? Japan has a lot of bridges.

Huh?
If the leafs made his rights available. And he then agreed to a contract with the team….. why would the leafs not get a pick/return.

What’s the point of making rights available, if the team just agrees with the player and waits to ufa?

Also I’m pretty sure that the Amazon series showed he clearly asked for a trade and the leafs said no.

I don’t think mikeheyev is the kind of asset that is generally made available right before the ufa deadline.
Maple Leafs open to trading rights to pending UFA Ilya Mikheyev

Maple Leafs reportedly shopping Ilya Mikheyev's rights

2 full weeks before he was a UFA these were posted. Also a deal like his is pretty basic. I bet it can be done in 15-20 minutes. Its not like there are complicated bonuses stuff like the Matthews or McDavid deals....

With what cap space??
They got 18 M in cap space and the need only 2 forward and 2 def to be signed
They can trade for Parayko but for Who ???
And they can signed Pesce
They will have 5 M to signed a 3rd liner winger and Liljgren

Ok. But if he knew he was going to Vancouver and talked to them. Where’s the return?

You think GMs say “we will let you trade for his rights” then they make a deal and just wait to sign it?

What’s the point of that?

I think you might have misheard......rough transcription:

"I think the Leafs are probably going to sign two defensemen. Or trade for a defenseman and sign another one. Probably looking at two of the top 6 have to be new bodies next year."

I don't think he meant that the Leafs were going to acquire two of the top six free agents.

He did say that a couple of minutes later.

Remember last time we got the best 2 available free agent Dmen? It vaulted us to the top defence in the league with Komosarek and Beauchemin!!!!

I’ll pull the parade file up and get working!!
UFA market is crap shot. But you never gave up nothing. Look at all the Dubois/Huberdeau trades?
