He did say that a couple of minutes later.

Rough transcription at 27:15 mark: "There's lots of defensemen out there. Chris Tanev, can they convince him to come. Matt Roy's out there.....Brett Pesce. I think the Leafs are going to be in the mix for the biggest defensemen available. As I say I think they're going to get two of them one way or another."

Comes down to what he meant by "them." In the broader part of the conversation, I still thinks he just means two defensemen period rather than necessarily two of the top D.

Part of the problem with using a podcast as a source of news. It's just two guys having a conversation. Friedman/Dreger etc always joke about getting "radio'd" where they'll say something innocuous in a podcast but then a comment will get taken out of context / get misunderstood and then the Internet purple monkey dishwashers it.

Ok. But if he knew he was going to Vancouver and talked to them. Where’s the return?

You think GMs say “we will let you trade for his rights” then they make a deal and just wait to sign it?

What’s the point of that?
Maybe The Leafs asked for too much and The Canucks just said never mind we will wait for UFA day. Same thing happened to Campbell so its not hard to imagine The Leafs did it with Mikhayev too

Pretty sure yoh have to agree to the deal before talking. That makes no sense. Everyone could just do that.

The Leafs and Oilers did exactly that for Campbell. Pretty sure The Leafs wanted a 2nd pick and The Oilers said a 5th at most and then there was no deal but there was enough talk of The Oilers wanting him that I am sure Campbell got wind of it.....

On the Chris Johnston show, CJ straight up said the Leafs WILL land 2 of the top D men available.

He did say one of them probably comes via trade which is interesting because we haven't really heard much in terms of which D men are on the trade market this summer.

There was talk of Parayko being available at the deadline and the Leafs were the main team talked about.

Now that Berube is coach I wonder if that gets revisited.

There are also heavy rumours of them being in on Pesce.

Maybe make the godfather offer to him.

Sounds like Brad is cooking

Cody Ceci is available. And he's 'top'. As in, 1 of 12 Dmen left playing in the Stanley Cup Finals :D

Bert, I dont want back, Gergor didnt earn a contract and should also walk, Lil is also an RFA, so, they have 3 RFA to resign. Domi is a luxury that if they can sign on a team friendly deal, else let him walk too, as there are many that can fill his role available, and cheaper too.

Leafs need to inject some youth, and let them develop on the job, not sign a bunch of filler players to hold them back, and some need a bigger role too.

Knies - Matthews - Marner
McCann - Tavares - Nylander
Jarnkrok - Holmberg - Robertson
Dewar - Kampf - Reeves
...this is with only resigning the 2 F rfa and not bringing in any homegrown talent, and considering Minten made the team out of camp last year, and Cowan cant go to the AHL, he should at least get the 9 game look.
so, if anything, we need to move out a vet or 2 to make room for the youth coming up, and the Leafs always sign players to cheap one-year show me deals.
At first I thought you meant Jared McCann, not Bobby McMann, on the second line.

I don't know why but this makes me think the media and fan base will hype up the 2 overpaid signings and it'll end up being Beauchemin and Komisarek 2.0

I agree it is easy work for the Leafs to sign needed bodies…

But lets not act like it will cure their woes. They are way too top heavy with their contracts. They have no depth to speak of.

Those salary breakdowns are awful. They won't win a thing with that sort of roster construction.

Well acquiring Niskanen and Orpik in the same offseason worked out great for the Caps. But than there’s Provorov and Severson in Columbus last season.

Very hard to revamp your defense in one offseason.

Leafs should for sure be targeting Brenden Dillon from the Jets. One more to go find after that. 3X$4.25 for Dillon to a contender gets it done?
