Interesting. That will make a big difference for recruiting provided the athletic programs are fine with doling out that many.

I think that is a dramatic statement by Friedman. USports Hockey may be competitive for the players but it isn’t a spectator sport. The average attendance is low and there is not significant media presence of any kind. All that will happen is the quality will go down and weaker hockey players will play. It’s not like the attendance will suffer.

USHL might better just become a part of the CHL here soon.
I don't think it will end well for the USHL and the BCHL for that matter after the vote happens.

I would agree. The Windsor Lancers play in a 500 seat recreational arena. Obviously it isn't big business and a form of hockey but this Friedman doesn't need to be clutching pearls on this.

The quality of the hockey will go down undoubtedly but does it matter? Decisions are made for Junior/Midget hockey and competitiveness etc. No one really cares. We are talking about fringe leagues that exist more for competitive recreation.

That is sort of what I was speculating on. Would any players leave their BCHL or USHL programs at Christmas and sign with their OHL team in the 2nd half of the seaosn.

100% good for the CHL. No doubt about it. I think we will start seeing players signing during the holiday break and suiting up in January. It will be interesting to see if Malhotra reports to Brantford and Valentini reports to Kitchener in January.

I think this rule change favour both leagues equally, I think for younger players there is no better place than the CHL, with exception to the USNTDP.

As players age out I think you would see more higher end players go the NCAA route rather than the ECHL or other minor pro.

I could see the CHL get a bit younger with more 18/19 year olds leaving for college who then can complete a bachelor’s prior to going pro.

I’m all for more choice and options for young players.

The one thing I wonder about is increasing the number of underage players. In theory if the league does get a lot more high end 16 year olds coming into league maybe it would be good to increase the underage to 4 players? Not related to this topic but I would also have goalies not count towards the underage or overage rule.

For a teenager with aspirations of playing in the NHL, the CHL is the best route to prepare them. Always has been, always will be.

Playing with a bunch of 25 year old burn-outs who aren’t even good enough to play in the ECHL is a last resort for players who either aren’t good enough to cut it in the CHL or have aged out and are just looking to keep playing at a level above beer league.

It's hard to say but I could see around 20. But I also see some 18 and 19 year old's leaving.

How many players debate whether they are going the CHL or NCAA route before signing in the CHL. Many sign in the CHL because the option of playing Tier 2 Jr. A for two seasons doesn't appeal to them. Now those players can sign in the CHL and then bolt to the NCAA at 18 or 19. Best of both worlds for them.

The NCAA has no draft. It's essentially a free for all when it comes to recruiting. Do you not think these schools will hire additional scouts who will scout OHL players and make a pitch for them to come to their school?

This dressing room is not even in the same category as OHL dressing rooms. NCAA schools treat their players like royalty. Do you honestly think that players in the CHL would not be tempted to leave the OHL for North Dakota? You can bet their scouts will be looking to recruit the best of the OHL.
