In the year they Montreal went to the Cup final, he was 3rd in TOI and got outscored at 5v5 33 to 50 during the regular season and 13 to 21 in the playoffs.
Now let's do the math for out defensive pairings for last year. I have a hunch those numbers will be looking real sweet after a little reality check

It’s a little much, but let’s not get upset here. We have plenty of cap space and Yzerman isn’t Kenny.

I think he’ll be great with Seider.

Remember how all you heard about Marc Staal when he came over to Detroit was how washed and overpaid he was... then he put in two pretty solid years?

I think we're about to see that with Chiarot.

That's what I think as well.

The guy was put in a shit situation in Montreal. Realistically he's a 2nd pair shutdown guy that was thrust into a #1 defenseman's role on a team that lost Weber, Kotkaniemi, Danault, and Price. All had good defensive impacts on that roster.

That would have been like the equivalent of making pre-back injury DDK the #1 after Kronwall left. We've seen that actually happen and know how that goes. Chiarot as a 19-20 minute guy that mostly PKs and plays tough is totally fine.

Did his worst playing with David Savard, who was also slotted too far up.

From an analytics perspective Detroit only slightly overpaid Chiarot.

Those are just contract projections. That has different inputs than actually evaluating how good a player is. That's separate from analytical models from places like J Fresh or Evolving Hockey or the hockey writers from the Athletic that analyze how good a player is separate from their contract.

By any analytic standard, this was a horrible decision and he'll drag down whoever he's paired with. At best, he's a 3rd pairing D man and can't be facing the other team's best players. I'm guessing they are going to saddle Seider with him, and that sucks for Seider's development. Chiarot should age poorly too. I think his diminished role in Florida in the playoffs and the fact that they made no effort to move pieces to keep him is also telling. Florida got absolutely crushed when he was on the ice in the playoffs from a scoring chance perspective relative to his teammates.

You obviously didn't witness Seider drag around Danny DeKeyser's corpse last season.

Literally every time I've ever noticed Chiarot he has stood out in a bad way. I wouldn't have signed a 2*2 let alone a 4*4

Well you aren’t a pro scout, and in many ways, defensemen are a lot like offensive lineman. If you’re hearing their name, it’s rarely for something positive.

Every time you notice Chiarot it’s been a bad thing? Well yeah, because you don’t give a shit about all the good things he does.

Of course when you get to the elite defensemen, the tide has turned. If Makar is quiet, it’s not a good night for him. But Ben Chiarot? Different ball game

Exactly this.
He is already not very good.
And he has the profile of a guy who isn’t going to age very well either.

According to JFresh's analytics, Maata has a significantly higher WAR than Sergachev.

Forgive me if I'm somewhat skeptical.

The Lightning are my second team. We used to cheer when Chiarot would step on the ice in the finals because it meant either a shift spent entirely in Montreal's end or a penalty.

Detroit as a whole scored 44% of the goals at 5v5 last year. Montreal got 39% of the goals when Chiarot was on the ice at 5v5 in the year they went to the SCF (40% in the regular season and 38% in the playoffs).

I couldn't care less about contract term, it does not prevent Detroit from doing anything in the future. I just hate the player. I wish they trade for somebody who is actually a legit top pairing D. I think he can play with Seider and it might even be an upgrade on DDK, but i don't think it will maximize Seider's value. And i hope they won't play Chiarot with Hronek, that will be a defensive shit show par excellence

Lalonde spoke at length in an early interview about Hronek and working with him to get better defensively. I wouldn't be surprised if Hronek is the next out of town while Detroit runs at Klingberg.

I like the signing, but I am not to fond of term like that on players like that at his age. However, I do understand players of his age wants term.

I think those games where the wings gave up 10/11 goals rattled Stevie, and now he is overpaying for grit and defensive play

Wow. I feel so sorry for Detroit and their developing core, particularly Seider. After having watched Chiarot in Montreal for the last few years, I'm confident that he hurts his team every moment he's on the ice, despite his "ruggedness." He makes any team he's on worse.
