Because a player plays top minutes, theyll look worse than they actually are. In Detroit hes going to be playing either with Seider or second pairing minutes.

It was like how everyone loved Ericsson when he came up, then got stuck on the top pair which he wasnt good enough for and he looked bad. If Chiarot isnt playing number one minutes he'll be fine in the top 4. If he ends up with Seider, it will be the best partner hes had in his career.

You dont get guys like Chiarot on 1 year deals lol thats outrageous

That's not how that works. Generally speaking players that play more minutes have increased scoring rates, I can show you the math if you'd like. Bad players produce bad results in most situations, good players produce good results. Sometimes it can be a result of the role they were given, eg: Copp with the Jets at first, but those are easily identifiable.

Chiarot wasn't good when he was with the Jets and he played 2nd pairing minutes there. He wasn't good with Montreal when he played top pairing minutes. He was tolerable as a 3rd pairing dman with the Panthers who have a more insulated roster than the Wings. If he plays with Seider everyone will wonder why Seider is having a massive sophomore slump.

Then you just don't sign the player lol. The point is that Chiarot is no different from your replacement level dman. Maatta & Cole are two defenceman who are better than Chiarot and signed for 1 year.

Cool story, Chiarot wasnt signed for his scoring rates. Second pairing dmen get easier matchups then number one dmen.

Gudbranson just got 4x4, CHiarot is a steal compared to that

God help us all if we have to watch he and Hronek play together

Which guy are we going to cast in a #1 role on the left side they can’t handle this season?

Stay tune to find out on season 8 of our defense sucks without Lidstrom!

Did you just bring up scoring rates and Chiarot in the same post?

I like the addition and cap hit but wish it was just 2 or 3 years.
I cant imagine we will need him after that what with Ed, Wall, AJo, Biuim, Hronek, Seb and Mo of course

For anyone who cares, Chiarot signing the equivalent of the Ericsson deal today would be $5.1M per.

Quality of competition doesn't really change things that much. What matters more is quality of teammates.

Yes, thank god we only signed the 2nd most overpayed defenceman of the day. Gudbranson was actually effective last year, but I still wouldn't have signed him to that contract.

That was a mix up of words. What I meant was that as players move up the lineup they see generally see their GF% spread become larger. They get to play with better players and as a result spend less time defending and more time on the attack. The scoring rate was my attempt to combine those two phrases. For example this year Oliver Kylington, Jordan Kyrou, & Gustav Forsling all had a bigger GF% spread upon receiving increased TOI.

As an aside, just because a player doesn't produce a ton of points it doesn't preclude them from impacting offence. Puljujarvi, Nichushkin, Danault, Orlov, etc. all produce strong impacts on offensive scoring rates even though they themselves don't produce a ton at ES.

If he's playing well, there's always a suitor to take on an extra defender with physical game.

Having too many top 4 guys isn't something I'm ever going to be stressed about.

I saw him a lot here in MTL, he basically played really well for one stretch and that was when the Habs went to the finals. But outside of that he was average at best. Stevie is spending way too much on character

If youve watched hockey the last 3 years and come away thinking Gudbranson is better than Chiarot then you dont know what youre watching.

Playing 25 minutes a night vs 20 a night makes a difference. Playing it against weaker competition definitely helps too.

Still like this signing. Imagine him
Playing with Seider, this will allow Seider to explore his offensive side and take more chances. Plus he’s physical, pairing him with Seider is going to cause some headaches for forwards, literally and figuratively

I honestly think Ben Chiarot is our worst defenseman. He's league replacement level. For f***s sake we should have just kept DK if we were fine with a broken hockey player

Considering Gudbranson got 4x4, I don't mind this deal. We're gonna be tough team to play against.

Crazy how we've added:

Kubalik-Copp-Perron
Chiarot-Maatta
