Oof, that's a bad one for Steve. Really don't see the point in blocking up the left side with one of the worst defenceman in the NHL. The guy is an anchor and should be making league min.
Modified not Full... That's a pretty decent difference IMOBRUTAL. And a NTC??
Very uncharacteristic Stevie Y signing.
exactly!! He logs minutes can help block shots, PK, clear the zone its for 4 years and guess what at 4.9 for 4 years that’s literally not going to hurt us one bit on the cap. Within 2 years the cap will raise anyways I’m sure. Some people make way to big of a deal on signings. Like what other LD would you want thats on the market that you would want?I suppose it depends on what Chiarot you believe you are getting. Florida Chiarot is no good. The Chiarot Florida thought they were getting is probably worth what he just signed.
I'm not going to call this a steal, but I'd like to see it on the ice before I get upset. At a bare minimum it's someone who can answer the bell physically and log bottom pairing minutes. Which is not worth what he's got, but still.
I personally wouldn't have gone this route, but I truly think almost any signing made for four years or less does not hurt us in our cap situation. It's a reliable-ish body to play LHD as we transition the kids onto the roster.
I won't sit here and say I love it, I don't. I can understand it though.
In no world is Chiarot anything more than a third pairing guy.Chiarot - Seider
Maatta - Hronek
Edvinsson - Lindstrom
Oesterle, Kampfer, Walman as extras / rotating in.
He's Detroit's highest AAV defense at 4.75M. He's not as bad as everyone is letting on, he'll do great as Seider's partner, where he isn't the main D on the pairing.
He was playing over his head in a top pairing role on a bad team.Remember how good Chiarot was in Montreal when they got *checks notes* 40% of the goals when he was on the ice?
It doesn't matter how many goals you give up. Only whether or not you looked tough while doing it.
In the year they Montreal went to the Cup final, he was 3rd in TOI and got outscored at 5v5 33 to 50 during the regular season and 13 to 21 in the playoffs. He was playing over his head in a top pairing role on a bad team.
Hes not one of the worst dmen in the NHL lol what are you talking about? Hes a top 4 dman that played as a number one last year. He was playing 21 minutes night in Florida, down from 24 in Montreal and was much better. Hes not a number one dman but he wont be played like one in Detroit either.
Hes a top 4 dman who got paid like one. Its not an amazing contract but its about what you should expect. Hes absolutely not one of the worst dmen in the NHL. And hes a guy who will set the tone and help with changing the culture. No one is gonna be getting close to the goalies with him on the ice

Because a player plays top minutes, theyll look worse than they actually are. In Detroit hes going to be playing either with Seider or second pairing minutes. He is not. Again, because a player plays top minutes does not mean they're particular apt at the role. He was awful in Montreal and hasn't been good outside of his time in Florida. He has almost always down worse than his teammates in terms of xG ratio and normal G ratio. It's great that he'll set the tone, he's consistently one of the most penalized players in the NHL. His propensity to take penalties is also another downside to his game.
He's someone you sign for 1 or 2 years who can act as a bridge. He provides nothing of value over a defenseman like Marc Staal other than you can point to his TOI and say "He played a lot". If you want to change the culture let the coach handle it. Don't give a replacement level player an actual contract for that.
I’m not sure people realize how unbelievably desperate we are for LD help. Chiarot is a huge upgrade for us (yes, our LDs were that bad). We have the cap room to make this contract perfectly fine.
Lol where did those 4 x $5.5M rumors come from? Did someone leak those ugly numbers so $4.75M looks much better?
Chiarot is worth $4M. Maybe 4.25. So an overpayment of $500k isn’t the end of the world.
