I keep reading how Chiarot produces nothing or next to it, offensively.

Last year at 5 on 5
Chiarot 1339 minutes 6-12-18
Hronek 1351 minutes 2-23-25
Zeider 1401 minutes 1-20-21

Primary points
Chiarot 6-8-14
Hronek 2-12-14
Seider 1-9-10

He was more prone to giveaways
Chiarot 53
Hronek 39
Seider 35

He was more physical than Seider
Chiarot 133 hits
Hronek 54
Seider 120

He had the best CF% - thanks to his Florida totals.
His Montreal CF was about the same as Seider/Hronek - crappy. That's often a team score.

His goals against average
Chiarot F - 2.81
Chiarot M 3.1
Hronek - 2.33
Seider - 2.63

The Ollie Matta signing surprises me more than Chairot.

Going into the offseason I had in my head already that Albert Johansson/Simon Edvinsson were coming over and playing on the team. Still can... but they'll have to jump guys like Matta/Walman/Osterle.

I guess it shouldn't be too hard if they're really that good.

Having slept on it, still not a fan of this. But I'll give him a chance, luckily if he is stankville it won't be like he's harming us cap wise.

If they can't jump those three they're better off in GR for a year.

Was just going to post this

Having competition is exactly what Yzerman created for all of the young guns on the cusp of making the team.

They have to earn the spot, not just be given it because the team is so god damm awful. This is the true recipe to having a winning team and a winning culture.

Couldn’t be more happy with this off-season thus far, I mean I still would have loved to see big Geno Malkin suit up for the wings next year, but it’s been a good haul for Stevie nonetheless.

The team is now competitive again and will be a lot more enjoyable to watch.

Teach me how to pronounce his name?

I keep saying Chariot in my head, but I know that isn't right. Is it Chia-Rot? Chai-row? Cairo? Please help???

Buy a Griffins season ticket. That team will be damn strong, full of prospects and fun to watch.

Admittedly I don't know a lot about Chiarot but why are people acting like the Wings now have as much cap tied up in bad defense as San Jose last season?

Also keep in mind that after Seider and Hronek, the defensive corps included Nick Leddy's disinterested play, Marc Staal (love the guy but sloooow and getting slower), Lindstrom, Dekeyser, Oesterle, Walkman, Stecher, and Juolevi.

How is this anything but an improvement?
Because the only signing some on this board would be happy with is Cale Makar at league minimum so as not to tie up cap space we already have plenty of, or signing a player like Chiarot, who should not only play for free but actually be paying Yzemran for the privilege to play in Detroit, any other type of term is unacceptable and terrible

Wow. I feel so sorry for Detroit and their developing core, particularly Seider. After having watched Chiarot in Montreal for the last few years, I'm confident that he hurts his team every moment he's on the ice, despite his "ruggedness." He makes any team he's on worse.
I don’t recall this perspective when he was one of the only 4 defensemen playing through the 21 playoffs.

Because Chiarot is not a relevant improvement on Nick Leddy, Marc Staal, Lindstrom, DK, Walman or Stretcher. He's maybe a little better than most of them, but not nearly enough to justify signing him for 4 years. Honestly, how would this board react if we gave Dekeyser a 4 x 4.75 mil contract yesterday? What we did is effectively the same

Lalonde spoke at length in an early interview about Hronek and working with him to get better defensively. I wouldn't be surprised if Hronek is the next out of town while Detroit runs at Klingberg.

I think the short answer is that Ben Chiarot is one of the most polarizing players in terms of how he is viewed by traditional hockey brass vs. how he is viewed in terms of analytics. Advocates of Chiarot will point out his defensive responsibility, compete level, fundamentals, penalty killing, etc. Critics will point out that he takes too many penalties, doesn't transition the puck effectively, spends too much time in his own zone, etc.

I don't know where I land on the player personally. I think there is some very legitimate criticism to chew on, but ultimately I understand the reasoning behind the signing and want to see how he looks under Lalonde this year.

Analytic snap shot for context (disclaimer - JFresh is not the be all and end all)

As someone who is all in on baseball analytics, I don't fully trust them in hockey. They can be part of an overall picture, but as you say they aren't the be-all, end-all some people want them to be, and they often require additional context.

Anyway, I'm going into this Chiarot experience with no bias, no horse in the race, just really interested in watching him and seeing how he performs in Detroit. Given the wide range of takes on this guy, and I understand the criticisms, I guess nothing will surprise me. But I'll certainly enjoy it if he winds up being much better than the rusty shopping cart full of burning rubber pucks slowly meandering down Woodward running over small children and flipping off your mother that some have made him out to be.

Go Ben.

The real issue is that he's not signed to a one year deal; even if he is superior to several other members of the previous year's defensive core - which, let me tell you, is debatable - he hampers the team moving forward in a significant fashion due to the high cap hit, particularly in a few years when, one would hope, the rebuild is truly complete and the team is ready to compete.

He's one of those players for who puts the lie to the "eye-test" in that he seems to be quite physically impressive at times, but drags down the team defensively and offensively.
That cap hit does absolutely nothing to hamper this team in the next four years. Absolutely nothing...especially given modern UFA classes and the direction of the cap over the next four years. Stop acting like we signed him for $8.5mm a year.

Given the state of our defense last year and other available options in the free agency market, I am far from upset with this signing.

Haven't really paid much attention to him in recent years, but my recollection of him is being a hard-nosed player with a hard shot. Hopefully he can be decent for us, didn't really have strong feelings one way or another on him. Did think he was one of the better LD options out there, but obviously said a few times I didn't *love* any of those options.

I do like getting some guys that are physical on the back end. Watching Dekeyser lose physical battles in front of the net or in the corners was pretty painful these last few years.

So Chiarot is not an improvement over Dekeyser, who as far as I know has not been offered a contract in the NHL? And Stetcher who got a 1-year contract from the tanking Coyotes?

"Not a relevant improvement" over most of those guys you listed is simply wrong. The real question is how he'll do as he gets into his later years as a D-man.

Posted this in the wrong thread:

Again, I'll be the first to admit I didn't know a ton about him other than some playoff viewings of Chiarot over the last few years but watching more of him over the last day...

He seems really solid? At worst, he seems a tad overly aggressive and pulls himself out of position to chase the body but nothing so egregious where I'm like "Whelp. that just cost them a goal".

I also don't really see the penalty minutes thing being an issue to - he had 48PIM last year...behind known defensive thugs and tough guys like...Rasmus Dahlin (62), Giordano (57), and OEL (52).

Also he's not exactly an offensive black hole - he posted 26pts and looks like he can make a breakout pass and chip in. "but that's really bad!" - compared to what? 102 year old Marc Staal's offensive production? How about the corpse of Danny Dekeyser? Even playing for a moribund team like MTL, he still put up 26 pts last season which would have put him ahead of a good number of our offensive dynamos - like Zadina.

He looks like he's tough, very mobile, gritty, shutdown defenseman whose played big and important minutes for a number of teams. I just don't get the narrative around him. He feels like more physical, less smooth Brad Stuart and we paid that dude like 4M for 4 back in 2010 dollars.
