So Chiarot is not an improvement over Dekeyser, who as far as I know has not been offered a contract in the NHL? And Stetcher who got a 1-year contract from the tanking Coyotes?

"Not a relevant improvement" over most of those guys you listed is simply wrong. The real question is how he'll do as he gets into his later years as a D-man.
Anyone saying Chiarot isnt an improvement over Dekeyser, Stetcher etc etc should just be immediately ignored lol.

When free agency hits its really easy to tell who only watches wings games and who watches the NHL in general.

I don't even think most Red Wings fans (or other teams fans) on these forums watch much of their own teams 🤣

I think they just kinda have it on in the background and gossip in forums about the game

Haven't really paid much attention to him in recent years, but my recollection of him is being a hard-nosed player with a hard shot. Hopefully he can be decent for us, didn't really have strong feelings one way or another on him. Did think he was one of the better LD options out there, but obviously said a few times I didn't *love* any of those options.

I do like getting some guys that are physical on the back end. Watching Dekeyser lose physical battles in front of the net or in the corners was pretty painful these last few years.

Really comes down to this, imo. Our left side was trash, and Yzerman made sure to go out and get arguably the best option available to at least temporarily fix it. Did he pay a bit of a premium to do it? Maybe, but nothing scary big.

Amen! This guy will be an ispiration on how to play defensive physical hockey for our young'ens.

I’m not sure people realize how unbelievably desperate we are for LD help. Chiarot is a huge upgrade for us (yes, our LDs were that bad). We have the cap room to make this contract perfectly fine.
Exactly. I don't mind wasting a few Illitch dollars if the term goes to Hades in a year or two. I'm much more comfortable with this than wasting draft capital for a similar move (Florida payed a 1st and 4th rounder + a prospect for Chiarot).

I feel like we signed the modern day version of Luke Richardson.

I know that NHL GMs disagree with the sentiment. Chiarot is well-thought of around the league. I also know that most of us want to reserve judgement until we see him on the team. Our defense was so bad last year that we think, "surely this respected player is better than them," but I honestly just don't see it. We just signed 2017 Dion Phaneuf or Jack Johnson. He's fine as a warm body on a nothing contract, but we signed him to be a relevant piece.

He will be easier to stomach watching than Dekeyser because he's physical and just hitting people is something. Having someone that can take some of the hitting spotlight off of Seider is a good thing. Furthermore 4*4.75 probably won't actually limit our flexibility and team building in a big way simply because we likely won't have enough talent that we need to worry about the cap... But I'd much rather overpay for an actually good player, take on cap dumps for sweeteners or just keep the extra 3.75 mil in cap space while signing an equivalent player for one year.

He also can be a veteran presence on our developing D. He's been far in the playoffs, played for a variety of coaches and systems and can help provide another leadership presence for the kids. There's value in having a vet back there.

I just don't know what you guys have seen watching Chiarot to think he's anything but another warm body. In your opinion, what is he better at than most third pairing D?

Indeed.

Chiarot is a throwback to defensive minded Dmen whom make life tough on the opposing forwards.

During the Habs Cup run I’ve read many complaints from Leafs fans on how many liberties Chiarot was taking with the Tronna pretty boys.

That right there won me over.

Physical presence…Blocks shots…Clears the crease…Has both decent skating/puck skills…Will come to the aid of a teammate.

His faults are what you would expect from a defender of his kind: looks for the big hits and the analytic crowd says that he spends too much time in his own end of the ice than he should.

He’ll probably get paired with either Seider or Hronek…I for one am happy he’s a Red Wing and excited for the season to begin.

Yeah our impressions are actually quite similar though I'd rate him as just an average skater and below average puck skills. I definitely see the physical play, but I notice the dumps and turnovers getting him hemmed in his end more than his hits. It will be nice to have another physical presence.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE????

Teach me how to pronounce his name?

I keep saying Chariot in my head, but I know that isn't right. Is it Chia-Rot? Chai-row? Cairo? Please help???
"Char - ot."

Is how I pronounce it. Hopefully I've been saying it right... lol.

I'd second what FMichael said regarding Chiarot. And I think the defense absolutely needed more physical presence. Teams had completely free reign around the Wings net. After Seider and Staal, the d-corps was 10-ply.

But my take was more about just how bad some of the players on the Wings Chiarot was being made equivalent to. This deal could go bad, especially in the last year or two, but it won't cripple the Wings. Mostly it seems like the Wings signed a slightly better Marc Staal for 4 years.

Overall I'm happy Yzerman is making moves to try and address team needs and not just picking off the scrap heap. Though this deal is the one where Yzerman has stuck his neck out the most.

Habs fan here. I've seen Chiarot and an injured Weber kickass and play against top lines. He had to carry the puck out of the zone for the first pass on every play because Weber had foot injuries. Underrated first pass. A great #2 to have on a first pairing.
