Confirmed Trade: [CHI/PIT] Sam Lafferty for Alex Nylander

A bump.

Lafferty still playing well for the Hawks, gets good minutes too, average about 15 minutes a game in his last 5 games.

Nylander still playing in the AHL, last 11 games : 1 goal 5 points for WBS Penguins.

Sounds like both teams got what they wanted.

And doing absolutely nothing with those 15 minutes…….

There isn’t a Pens fan that would rather have Lafferty. If all Nylander does is provide some skill for the Baby Pens then we would trade that all day for what Lafferty brings in the NHL.

Nothing?... you really should watch Hawks games every now and then.

Lafferty plays important complimentary role for the Hawks top 6 / top 9,
- but Nylander can't even score in the AHL. 11 last games, 1 goal, at AHL level,
skill? nope

Lafferty has his stuff what he brings, plays very simple game and it works, for Hawks anyways,
maybe Pens, as a better team, couldn't use him, couldn't find a proper role for him,
surely has found that in Chicago.

I thought Lafferty looked decent when I saw him with the Hawks. Looks a hell of a lot more motivated than Nylander did when i saw him play in the AHL. Working hard is a skill, too.

You're kind of cherry picking aren't you?

Nylander has 15 pts in 19 games since the trade, with 7 goals and 8 assists in those games. Can't really take what your saying seriously when your coming with that

Player A has 22 points in 107 NHL games including 3 in 23 games this season. Player A is 26 years old.

Player B has 32 points in 84 NHL games and is 23 years old.

Who ya got?

So to appreciate all that Lafferty brings, we need to watch more Hawks games and cant go by the stats. But you judging Nylander on his stat-line in the AHL is just fine?

Your take on Lafferty at the end is totally reasonable. He is probably looking good for Chicago because he's getting alot more ice time there. Good, happy for Laff. Glad you guys like him. But as much as he was playing hard, he was an offensive black hole, and wasnt bringing much else. Call it lack of opportunities or bad fit or whatever, it just wasnt happening here for him. Now we have guys like Dom Simon to do that for us.

Definitely one of the stranger hills to die on. The rest of the world had forgotten about this trade, except for one man.

I saw this thread thinking Lafferty had scored a hatty or was on a five game point streak or something. Nope.
Lafferty still more valuable come playoff time ....or when Marchand beats up your star goalie

Nylander will get you a few points early and then go missing. Just the way he is....a frustrating player with the skill he naturally has. He will float and go missing for games and it seems it is by choice. Because when he DOES decide to play he is an NHL player. He will leave you wanting more 90% of his games.

But also....he has come from Buffalo and Chicago which are dumpster fires in regards to development.

Nylander has serious late bloomer potential. Lafferty does not. If Nylander breaks out by the time he’s 26 I wouldn’t be surprised

He does. But that is totally up to him which is the conundrum. Hawks were done trying and were happy to move on from him. He needs something to motivate him so good luck finding what that is.

Lafferty is simply not the kind of player who sticks in the lineup for a playoff-contending team. He is a borderline NHL talent, and that's it. The notion that his "toughness" made trading him a mistake is utterly laughable - do you honestly think Brad Marchand would be afraid to take liberties with an opposing player for fear of reprisal from Sam f'ing Lafferty?

Say what you will about the Pens' "team toughness..." keeping Sam Lafferty around would have done absolutely nothing to improve that situation, because he would not even crack the lineup in the postseason if the Pens' roster were remotely healthy.

Yeah he’s a fantastic athlete. Kinda sucks he couldn’t become a fast physical bottom 6 C/RW in PIT.

Tries hard but grips the stick too tight and makes too many boneheaded plays, both with the puck and taking penalties, to be a regular in those hard minutes. Maybe he’ll figure it out in Chicago.

Doesn't Lafferty have 1 point in like 15 games for the Hawks?

Jesus dude, you really need to log off when it comes to this trade. I freaking played with Lafferty when I was 15 with the Mid State Mustangs and I don't even like him as much as you do.

And gaining Nylander has done nothing but make the pens even more soft which was exposed clearly against Boston. Playoff is different hockey and we have witnessed the pens get beat and battered the last few season by bigger more physical teams. Making an already bad situation worse isn't the answer. As long as the ones keep winning it isn't an issue...until about game 3 in round one!

Two questions.

1. What player in the Pens lineup do you think Lafferty would have been playing over if he were still on the roster?
2. Which team won that game again?

Again...this is utterly irrelevant. The most charitable possible interpretation of Lafferty's skill set is that he's a moderately physical fourth line plugger. Why would his mere presence on the roster stop any other team from taking liberties with the Pens' players? The Pens have had tons of rough-and-tumble guys on the team over the years and it has never, ever stopped other teams from taking cheap shots on their players. Can you describe any concrete way in which having Lafferty in the lineup would rectify this situation?
