Is there a group of people who didn't like the pick, and still don't at the moment, but don't think he's a bust, and think he could still become a serviceable NHL player in some capacity?

I mean here’s what I am:
1. Didn’t like the pick at the time.
2. I’m “meh” on it currently
3. Don’t think he’s a bust.
4. Think he will be a serviceable NHL player - 3C with an outside shot of being a 2C.

If he’s a 3C with fine skill and good physicality/compete I’ll be fine with the pick. Not what I would be doing with a first rounder, but the pick has been made. Trying to be realistic and understand that they can’t all be home run swings.

All my hopes and dreams for that draft are already riding on Heidt anyway

The issue I have with the pick, is that I don’t think we should be picking a guy in the 1st round just to be serviceable. But that’s just me. IMO, his ceiling, and I think is a huge if, is 3C. And atm, I don’t think he gets there.

Is there a world where Heidt turns out to be a 2nd liner, Kumpulainen turns out to be a 3rd liner, and Stramel turns out to be a 4th liner, and we just took them in reverse order? I think there might be.

Kumpulainen seems alright for a 2nd rounder
I like him but I don't see much more than a bottom six center, not much different than Stramel

When I say my hopes and dreams, I mean my hopes and dreams for a top offensive player

There is also a world where Stramel develops well into a strong contributor for this team. He has all the physical tools and is seemingly incredibly dedicated to hockey. You would think some people might see JEE, Rossi and Faber on this team right now and realize it’s a process that’s not often linear.

In terms of other players taken after Stramel, I’m not even sure I like a lot of those guys. I wanted Edstrom at the draft. He seems to be better than Stramel, but I’m not sure it’s by much.

Eriksson Ek is the closest comparable and he took till his 5th NHL season to surpass 30 points. I still remember the arguments with 2Pair, whom really liked Greenway and did not like Ek, back in the day. Good times lol

Kumpalainen has a long way to go before he’s in the NHL radar imo

Edstrom was always a lot more polished of a player. Stramel was a tools guy through and through. Just gotta hope he puts it together. Tom Wilson down the middle is a valuable player, even if it’s Tom Wilson-lite

I know it was just the one training camp, but I was really impressed with the little things he did. He kinda seems like he could make the NHL a lot sooner than people expect, even if the upside isn't very high.

Yeah I don’t think he has any NHL level skills right now but I’ve been wrong before. I think if anything he’s on the O’Rourke path, just as a forward.

I would love to hear your insights into how Stramel has played this year. Tell me, in detail, the things you like and dislike about Stramel’s game.
I've caught some of the highlights...or lack there of Stramel. I know of his four on four goal where he did a good job of getting two of the players to collapse in on him before dishing the puck to his teammate, though have no frickin idea why he then decided to lazily skate toward the point when his teammates were attacking. Guess he was worried if they gave up a rebound he didn't want to get caught?

Lucius looks pretty damn good as he's crashing to the net.

The only other positive I see is that Stramel seems to be winning faceoffs which is what this team needs.

As for the Eriksson-Ek comparison... He was good defensively but scouts knew of his offense...just Wild fans ignored it because it didn't translate immediately. As well comparisons of the SHL vs college is hard because teens are playing against men in that league. Ek held his own and was even played on their men's international team at 20. He was an underrated prospect coming into the league and for the Wild.

Still view this as who else should they have picked? Perreault was the only guy left on the board that really interested me. If he ends up being big and Stramel flops then I'm happy to criticize the pick. Until that happens I'll wait to see how things develop beyond the first 2 weeks of the season.
