Nobody said it was the goalPumping out third line centers is the goal now lol
Even Minnesota-Wisconsin? Tragic.I refuse to watch any Wisconsin games
I don’t think anyone can replicate was JEE has. His temperament and compete level are such a strange combination. He’s rarely ever rattled and is always laser focused on the puck. I think you could give the dude a billion dollars and he would shrug and get right back to hounding the puck and menacing the guys in the other jersey. He’s a machine and should be our captain. I rarely have anything good to say about anyone but man do I love Ek. I think his progress was actually hampered by MN and his ceiling was higher.
I think he's fairly strong in that part of the game. You forgot to add the very punchable face intangible...
Well, JEE was the Captain of the SWE WJC team, I think. It's not like he wasn't highly regarded when he was young. Stramel is much more of a question mark.
does Stramel not look a lot like a young James Spader?
I see it a little bit. Like a distant, more punchable cousin.does Stramel not look a lot like a young James Spader?
Maybe, yeah. More approachable, less arrogant. I did not like Spader when he was younger, but he has rely grown on me. Maybe Stramel will follow the same development path?does Stramel not look a lot like a young James Spader?
If James Spader's eyes were 3 inches closer together maybe?does Stramel not look a lot like a young James Spader?
Uhhhh… it already started? When does college hockey season start? November sometime?
Mikko was better than JEE, but JEE is a great player in his own right.I refuse to watch any Wisconsin games, but the play I have seen from him with the national team showed legitimate skill and NHL potential. He is not a low IQ player as I think some seem to imply, or at least he does not appear that way when he is with his peer competition, quite the opposite. And he has a tremendous motor, great strength and positioning to use it.
He has essentially the same ceiling as JEE, whatever that may be. Its clear the Wild development staff have a template with him that they think they can replicate, he has shown consistent improvement every year. Kumpulainen is a very similar project, big body Centers with insane stamina, good positioning, and flashes of underlying skill.
If we can start pumping out JEE clones, even discount versions, I am all about it. Remember when JEE was discount Mikko?
I think so too, but I also think that JEE has a chance to become better. Mikko had injury problems, and played on teams with less talent and a very strict defensive structure, which probably hurt his production during his prime years.Mikko was better than JEE, but JEE is a great player in his own right.
Through age 26 seasons:
Eriksson Ek: 421 games, 92 goals, 206 points (18 goals, 40 points per 82 games)
Koivu: 365 games, 79 goals, 255 points (18 goals, 57 points per 82 games)
If you want to bring Koivu close to # of Eriksson Ek games: first 433 games, 96 goals, 3017 points (18 goals, 60 points per 82 games)
If you want to start Eriksson Ek at the age that Koivu started in the NHL (22 yrs old): 331 games, 83 goals, 183 points (21 goals, 45 points per 82 games)
Obviously there are differences in deployment; Eriksson Ek just started not being a "checking center" last season.
Don't forget that Beast-Mode Koivu was a thing for several years. Something not even remotely seen as a possibility from Ek at this point.I'm just also remembering Koivu's ability to carry the puck and drive possession as well as his face off ability. I think Ek is really good, but Koivu was a step above what Ek has been. Last season, this is closer but Ek is mainly a finisher on offense while being good defensively and okay at FOs.
Koivu was a play-driver on offense and more of a facillitator which ultimately means he was part of driving possession more often and he was better at FOs while being a candidate for best defensive center in the league.
A long time ago someone on here mentioned that JEE's ceiling would be that of a shoot first Koivu.I'm just also remembering Koivu's ability to carry the puck and drive possession as well as his face off ability. Exactly.Don't forget that Beast-Mode Koivu was a thing for several years. Something not even remotely seen as a possibility from Ek at this point.
Beast-Mode Koivu could takeover games.
In his best years, the oppenent didn't want to make Mikko angry... they wouldn't like it when he was angry.
