Charlie must have taken a look at how Sweeney has squandered the money from team friendly deals and said " f*** it, I'm taking the money.

Down the road, if I'm Bergy , I'm taking at least the same. His contributions have been way greater than Charlie's. If I'm Pasta I'm taking the same. A Rocket Richard is better than Charlie's achievements too. This is how it will be going forward. Better start drafting better or get used to the idea of a perennial also ran.

Totally agree with you about drafting and player development as a whole. It's been crap. If they don't manage this right, McAvoy will just be the next Klingberg or Giordano. Really good players on horribly managed teams. I like McAvoy. I just hope they manage this team correctly, after Bergy is gone and Marchand slows down. I don't have faith in that.

This deal in short time will look like the “team friendly deals” that the guys have signed recently.

What kind of message does it send to your Captain and soul, Bergeron ? The guy will be 37 next Summer and UFA. He is making "only" 6 and a half million. Will Bruins give him a 10 M $ contract per season ? I doubt.

Hope Forbot is what we need, because if anyone saw the last playoffs, everyone can tell the way to beat the Bruins is neutralize or target McAvoy. Not that he can't handle himself, but definitely need some backup or guys to help curb that.

Agreed he won’t be making $10m or anywhere near it. He will be making roughly what he is now.

What kind of message did it send to Chara when he was captain and they gave him a 1 year $5m contract when there was five forwards and one other defender on the roster making more than him?

Chara was over 40. he was your best paid player for a long time.

I doubt Bergeron wasn’t expecting anything less. I doubt he thinks he should be the highest paid player on the team. Salaries and money always shuffling. Pasta loves this.

Part of me believes with this signing that Bergeron is retiring after this season. People told me I was wrong about Krejci and ended up being right. Not that I am always right cause I am not, but signs were there. Same now with Bergeron. This salary plus eventually Pasta tells me they are looking at Mac and Pasta as the future leaders of this team. Swayman just might be the other building piece if he has a good season and it’s the build of the future team. The veteran heavy team this season, and possibly one more is for another kick at the can before Bergeron and Marchand are gone.

Agreed about its similar in percentage of cap that chara signed back way in 2006 but chara at the time was way more polished and was just a tower of power at that time. McAvoy also is and going to be a elite dman but I don't think they are in the same league in terms of way they were in their career when chara signed that contract . I strongly feel donny caved a bit here because of those ridiculous contracts like seth jones signed and they were comparable to what McAvoy is. Good news is its probably just a mil over in aav in what McAvoy is truly worth and if donny can somehow dump a guy like moore this isnt a big deal.

I wouldn't characterize it as DS "caving" but I see what you're saying. I think it's just a matter that McAvoy's camp had more leverage, given his situation as a budding superstar, and the team's situation, where his exit to follow the money (based on the comparables) would severely damage the Bruins' D corps and the franchise's image. The side with more leverage will usually get what they want.

So Sweeney had to go Charlie's way on the $, but I think both sides wanted the term, so having him locked up through his prime years is a win-win.

Alright then let’s go through the Chara timeline

2006-2010: 7.5m AAV
2011-2017: $6.5m AAV
2018: $5m AAV

He was 33 years old when he signed his 2nd contract with the Bruins and despite being a year removed from a Norris trophy he still didn’t get a career high AAV. I just highly doubt bergy is going to get a career high AAV going into his age 37 season. It just historically never happens that way.

I dont think it will faze Bergeron at all. He knows how it works and has worked.

But nice of Habs fan to drop by and be so concerned with Bruins payroll.

Geez. Good thing we're very lucky Patrice Bergeron is an adult professional athlete and not a child.

Bottom line is McAvoy is 23. He’s contract is reflective of what he is going to bring to the bruins in the future. He’s projecting as one of the top defenders in the NHL and just got paid $9.5m per year for the next eight years. He just got market value for what the market is in 2021. Four years from now when players are making $11+ million we will be looking back on this deal as we see Hedmans deal right now.

Probably the dumbest post I've ever seen. Bergeron, Marchand, Pasta are all happy for Charlie. Pasta definitely getting paid... Bergeron won't take more than 5 mil if he comes back (just a hunch, but certainly won't wait anything more than he's getting this year). 9.5 for Chuckie over the course of the deal is going to be a total steal and team friendly deal.
