I don't understand how this can be viewed as a bad deal or an overlay honestly

He's a better player than every single one of those 9 million+ defenseman that singed this off-season, and is younger than all of them besides Makar.

This is a great deal, and will only look better in years 3-8.

This is reminds me of the Drasaitl deal Chiarelli put together. At the end of the day, for this type of player, you just can't go wrong on an 8 year deal. The point is to get the guy under contract. Period.

That and I've heard multiple times that it will probably be a bad contract in the last few years. Who knows what the cap limit will be 5 years from now and even at the end of McAvoy's contract he'll be 31/32? Not like 39 dying on the vine.

Even if the cap stayed flat for 8 seasons, he'll be freaking 32. Right in his prime.

Bad deal lmfao. Some people don't have a clue.

it’s a market value deal. Certainly no discount though either way

He scored 21 even-strength points (one behind Adam Fox) during last season's regular season and had the fourth-best Corsi For percentage (58.51) at 5v5 among defensemen who skated at least 800 minutes. He also claimed the top spot at Shots For percentage (61.13).

Charlie is a stud and wanted to stay in Boston. He is amazing and we are fortunate to have him as our cornerstone on D for the next 8 years. He is a perfect choice and a born leader. I am so happy.

100%. Also Marchand is a top 5 player in all of hockey and makes 1 mil more then Coyle! He gave a nice discount and if you don’t think that helps our team and cap people are sadly mistaken.
Well to be fair Coyle is overpaid but yes Marchand’s deal was team friendly, although it was 4 years ago and we sort of bought low on him which obviously paid off.

Very happy with this deal. Around $9 mil p.a. was the figure I thought was fair and realistic for Charlie. So I look at the $9.5 and think that perhaps it's a tad high initially, but the 8 years is fantastic term and the money will look better and better value as the seasons pass. Reality is good defenders are getting paid at the moment and McAvoy is up there with the very best, so he's getting his market value, as he should.

Thing is too, yeah it's a lot of dough for one player, but Sweeney's previously taken the savings from the under-market deals our top line are on and wasted them to little benefit. So we may as well give guys like McAvoy what they're truly worth and lock up the key cornerstones of the team, rather than quibbling over a mil or two here or there that'll probably just be frittered away elsewhere anyway.

And there shouldn't be. The money is very fair, Market value wise both ways.

I think the days of hometown discounts are in the past, at least for an upcoming superstar. Maybe a vet who's made his money and wants to remain or return to Boston but the deals the perfection line signed, IMO are long gone.

Yup it’s to bad they didn’t jump at 8x8 but I’m sure the agent was aware where contracts were going

I’m good as a 50 point player- I’m assuming he will be in first PP

He got approx what he should get given the current market for a Dman of his caliber. A win for the Bruins to retain his talent, but my view is it’s not a financial win or loss….it’s a re-signing at current market values.

In terms of what happens in 3-8 years, I feel like it is hard to predict if the contract will be viewed over its term as a great deal or not…just too many variables including potential for injury - every deal with term carries that risk.

Ya make the moves you think are right at the time based on info you have available at the time. On that basis, good solid signing. A Happy Charlie. A happy fan base. Lots to like.

Agree, guys like Rask and Bergy may take huge discounts in the final years of their careers possibly to stay with Boston.
