Despite all that, his team pumps his opponents with regularity in shots, chances xG and goals. These are anecdotal observations that are skewing how you're evaluating these two players. They are VERY similar players that look different getting similar results. Fox may play more on the PK but his results are poor. It's one of the only real weaknesses in his game. McAvoy, on the other hand, is one of the best PK players on earth.

I just think people's eyes really lie to them a lot. Fox and McAvoy look really different on the ice. McAvoy is a physical specimen, he's loud on the defensive end of the ice and while he's graceful, there is a noiseyness to the way he plays the game. Fox is slick as hell and everything about his game is graceful. He's a quiet player who has a charismatic game. Depending on your perspective, you're going to draw conclusions based on your own biases as to who is "better" when really you're just saying which style you prefer.

That's why I like the data models so much. They don't give a shit what players look like. It takes all bias out of the equation and just tells you what happens. When you just look at what happens, these two guys look really similar and arguing which one you want seems silly.

I'll take McAvoy for the sole reason that they are the same age and Chuck has 1 more year on his deal. That's it. Don't think there is much differentiating either guy beyond that.

I kind of look at them as modern era equivalents of
Park (Fox) and Potvin (McAvoy).

Charlie McAvoy was having the best offensive season of his career before Hampus Lindholm arrived at the trade deadline. His eight goals were already a career high. So were the 32 assists he had at the time.

But playing next to Lindholm, another highly-skilled defenseman who can chase down pucks and initiate offense, has allowed McAvoy to stretch his game,

“What you’re seeing is Lindholm breaks out the puck very well, so it frees Charlie up to activate,” Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy said. “He’s always been good at that. But he’s usually the one making the first pass and then maybe getting eliminated by the forecheck. So now it’s his partner doing some of that so he’s got a bit of a free pass to support the rush.”

McAvoy’s recorded seven assists in five games since being paired with Lindholm. He’s had at least one assist in four of the five games.

With Lindholm taking some of the work off McAvoy’s plate, McAvoy can afford to be more involved on the offensive end.

“He’s always been encouraged to join in when it’s appropriate and I think right now, because what I just talked about, it’s just easier developing for him,” Cassidy said. “Both guys are really good at shaking the first guy and now all of a sudden you got something. And if the forwards support well, then off you go.”

Cassidy split Lindholm and McAvoy against the Maple Leafs. He said circumstances will dictate whether he does it again, but eventually, he’ll play Lindholm with Brandon Carlo.

“It’ll probably be one of those days where it’s, ‘OK, the pieces fit today, that’s how we’re going to do it,’ ” Cassidy said. “But I’ve liked him with Charlie. We’re going to try to [split them up], but if it doesn’t happen, that means a good thing has happened along the way where everyone’s doing their part.”

McAvoy quietly sitting just outside the top 10 in points among all defensemen. Right now he's got 47pts (career high) with 14 games remaining in the season. He's got 7pts in his last 5gp since Lindholm joined the team and at that 5 game rate he'd put up another 20 points over the last 14 games. Seems unlikely, but I'll be interested to see if McAvoy can manage just shy of a P/GP pace and finish the season with 60pts.

Anyone want to guess the last time a Bruins d-man put up 60+ points in a season?

thought I might get it on a technicality with Gonchar, but the year he was acquired at the trade deadline he finished the season with 58 total points between Washington and Boston.

Krug had 59 in 2018 and probably would have had 60+ the next year but didn't play the full season.

So yeah I also gotta figure it's Bourque.

btw, something that kinda blew my mind while looking for the answer to this: Dennis Wideman had a career year in 14/15 with Calgary putting up 15 goals and 56 points, better than his 50 point season in 2009 with Boston. I always had it in my head that he was washed by the time he went to Calgary and always figured 2009 was his best year offensively.
