For my first post in eons, I am just going to say I don't like this. The move has all the hallmarks of a corporate power play. Luc strikes me as a man who has gotten by on looks and charisma rather than smarts. He probably has been plotting this move behind the scenes for quite some time, whispering in Beckerman's ear while desiring total control. Bringing Blake along means that there is no threat whatsoever to Luc's power. This is not how successful organizations are built- you want some tension, disagreements so that all opinions are heard. That seems to have ended.

At the same time, how can you treat Sutter and DL so badly? They won two Stanley Cups for this godforsaken organization for Pete's sake. Yes, Sutter needed to go, but he should have been given the opportunity to retire gracefully. He earned that right. At the same time, DL certainly made some significant errors, but HE WON TWO CUPS. How many GMs can say that? What has Blake ever done to take his job? This is a lack of class and really proves my point, Luc won a behind the scenes power play and stuck a shiv in his enemy's backs when they were most vulnerable. This stinks, and I've forever lost respect for Luc.

I kind of get the same feeling, that Robitaille charmed his way into total control.

I was all for making the changes, it had to be done with the recent results and current state of the franchise. But I really wish they had gone outside the organization and gotten the fresh start that we deserved.

You have a guy overseeing things that has no real education, and the new GM is hated by half the fanbase.

It's a bittersweet day for me.

Good to see you post!

You seem to echo my speculation from an earlier post. Total power play right down to how they were unceremoniously dumped.

I wanted Sutter to move on but they could of orchestrated something where he walks away and can save a little face. Then for Dean to be lumped in after taking them from nothing to the top 2x, well, the optics aren't good.

Firing guys is never easy and it usually isn't hugs and kisses on the way out, but they deserved better. Lombardi not being bumped upstairs in favor of Robitaille taking over control of the entire operation is all I need to know about what is going on here.

But hey...there are those that will argue what goes around, comes around for DL due to Visnovsky and Richards. It's a business and I get it, but the whole thing stinks with Luc taking over and putting in a rookie GM underneath him.

Picking up guys in their retirement years (well maybe not for Iggy) that their teams were basically giving away.

And the Lecavalier trade may not even go down as a winner, Weal looked pretty good this year for Philly.

He was their best forward down the stretch, once he was given stability, top minutes with finishers , regular shifts, he thrived. So fast and great hands. goes o the dirty areas to score, smart player. It was a great pickup. Hexy (when asked about Weal) after the trade, commented about knowing exactly what Weal could do, being familiar with hm. I just hope they have the $$ to sign him.

Heard Lombardi went against advice of his inner circle to bring back Sutter after last season. Always a gambler lost some big bets lately

Weal was only with Philly for 20 something games, hardly a regular with the big club. Not a player to lose sleep over.

Luc is going to learn the hard way just as MacBeth did- you go for all the marbles and then lose, a tragic death awaits you. Unfortunately, he has probably never read Shakespeare, much less a balance sheet, so the analogy will escape him.

He was a regular top 6 player from the top he was called up and will be next year, if they can sign him. Given the lack of speed, skill and scoring on the Kings, I don't see them in a position to be picky.

This is crazy. It was Sutter's time to walk, but I thought Lombardi would stick around in some fashion. I'm not excited about Blake and Luc taking over at all. I was hoping for some new blood from the outside with a fresh perspective. I'm nervous about who they pick as our coach.

Totally believe that. It was obviously time to move on after last season but he brought him back and then gave him a worse team than the year before. Didn't he say he never wanted to hire another coach again RE: Sutter?

The man's loyalty ultimately cost him this job as it also colored most of the poor decisions following 2014.

With that being said, I still respect his loyalty to his guys. You can't have that much loyalty as a GM of a major sports franchise, but I respect the hell out of him for having that trait.

Of course, it completely torpedoed this season. Strip Brown of the "C" and then bring back a coach the roster is tired of playing for.

Please.

Weal wasn't going to help the kings, just like the Flyers went nowhere too. He's an AHLer until he can be with the big club for a full year.

I kind of get the same feeling, that Robitaille charmed his way into total control.

Great point about Luc's lack of education. You don't need education to win at corporate politics, but you do need one to succeed after you've toppled your rivals. I got to know Dan Beckerman very well when I did my study. He is likely a man who gives in to charm and flattery. Got to give Luc credit here, he won the game. Now comes the tough part, however, and no way is this guy smart enough to win consistently. The higher they are, the harder they fall, and this time Luc is going to have a hard time maintaining the precious image he has so long cultivated with the fan base.

On the plus side, Lombardi's biggest weakness is undying loyalty. We know Blake doesn't have that problem!

This is so strange for so many reasons. But one of 'em is that the Old Boys Club approach is working with maybe one team (Toronto), and they are an 8th seed and the guys they brought in weren't home town heroes, and in Lou's case, are some of the best executives of the last 30 years.

Things aren't working in Tampa, Col, weren't working in Edm. I don't get it. Does anyone thing Blake is smarter than Sakic or Yzerman? I sure don't.

With you 100% here. Luc is no Rhodes Scholar. For all of Lombardi's faults post-2014, he was indeed the smartest guy in most rooms, and a relentless worker.

He and Sutter needed to go; that's clear. But we may have just gone from the frying pan to the fire.

Dean's loyalty was his tragic flaw - in the true sense of the word.

edit: Quoted in the thread on the main boards - tldr version, agreed with Sutter, thought Lombardi would stay to right his wrongs. Not concerned about Robitaille because I think he'll be one step removed, but am queasy about Blake - hope he surprises us.

wow yeah, looks like Luc is in complete control.

He is like Lieweke except he is a former player so will probably be more hands on with regards to hockey decisions.

Luc seems like he is one of the most powerful people in the league now.

Things happened so quickly today, but the timing seems a bit off to me. Someone had to fill the roles/responsibilities of those leaving a day after the season ended. I don't think it outside the realm of possibility that these are interim assignments. Something definitely smells fishy though...
