This makes me sad. No Celtic has embraced Boston over the past decade like he has, really thought he was gonna be a lifer. On the surface Porzingis + 2 firsts for Smart is a great deal, but man it sucks seeing him go.

On one hand, I thought the Celtics needed to shake up their roster, and I wasn't particularly enthused about trading Tatum or Brown. And despite his shortcomings, Porzingis is a really good player - more talented than Smart, to be sure.

On the other hand, my fear is that this is the kind of trade that really helps your 2K team, but is kind of risky in real life. Trading someone who - for better or for worse - has really been the heart and soul of your franchise and is your best playmaker and best defender for an injury prone one-year rental could easily blow up in their faces in spectacular fashion.

Don’t mind the trade. They dealt from a position of strength and filled one of need, while adding two first round draft picks and have the mid level exception.

They’ll start Derrick white and sign another bench guard.

I like the trade either way with brogdan or smart. Pretty clear Brad Steven’s isn’t done though. Still quite a few more rosters spots to fill out with gallinari and muscala going out.

I'm a very very casual Celtics fan. That means I might tune in for a few minutes if they're in the Eastern Conference or NBA Finals. So, my question is (for those of you who actually follow basketball): is this a good trade or not?

At face value it's a great trade. Porzingis + 2 firsts for Smart is a great deal.

Pure value wise, yes it’s a great trade. But I imagine theirs more dominoes to drop. Smart, gallinari and muscala roster spots now open. Possibly grant williams as well

Its a Celtic trade so of course its the bestest ever silly, lol
They got the best player out of the guys involved and two first round picks. All for an aging Smart, who wasn't a true point guard. They now have actual PGs in White and Pritchard freed up to distribute the ball, and they can still work a sign and trade with Grant Williams. They also still have Brogdan, and can either keep him or move him. So there's a lot of flexibility.

I think I hate this.

The one caveat is we have no idea if Marcus was simply injured last year or if there is real reason to believe his body has broken down from a decade of playing hard as he does.

Either way, love or hate his game, that guy f***ing cared and he loved Boston. Sad to see him go.

the problem is we'll all so get to witness why Porzingas is a journeyman. The GM didn't strike gold here

Time will tell.

Vegas loves the deal. Celtics move up to being tied with the nuggets for the best nba odds to win the championship next year.

Now they have the ammunition and roster spots to add another prominent player or two, with two firsts, grant williams and the mid level exception.

Roster construction is far from done.

It is an abomination of a trade. Way to make yourself worse. Brad Stevens is trash
strong disagree on that one

Sad to see him go, he played his ass off. But that ain’t a bad deal at all, especially if Smart is in decline defensively like it appears he is

I actually think worse of the trade after sleeping on it, not a fan of the direction the team is going where 3 pointers are the only shot that matters with a coach who isn't happy even when they shoot 70% from 2 if they aren't shooting enough threes and moving away from the defensive identity they had. They were a pretty soft team already and they are about to lose most of what they had once Grant Williams is signed and traded.

If they play the Bucks in the playoffs who's going to be willing to take the contact and draw charges against Giannis for potentially 7 games like Smart and Grant were? Who's going to be willing to make Embiid work if Horford isn't on the floor? Basketball might be a whistle happy sport but you still need that toughness and who on the Celtics is tough that's going to be on the team next year?

Heart and soul and only one who cares what is this high school? Oh yes he cared so much he wouldn’t stop shooting threes when he was 0-8. Subbing himself in when you need offense only, something he couldn’t provide. I’ll miss him so much

Classic left brain/right brain trade. Emotional side hates it, analytical side loves it.

They have Pritchard already on the roster.

Going? It’s been this way for like 6 years
Exactly. It’s the way the entire league has gone.

sure but Porzingas isnt a core player.
Sure he is.

Smart and Porzingis shoot the same # of 3’s, Porzingis is just a lot better at it and last year he actually learned how to score when the defense closes out on his 3. One of the best in the league at it as a matter of fact.
