One of the game storylines I was following somewhat casually was the duel between Lundkvist vs Jones and Schneider. I felt like all 3 players came into the game with something to prove. ZJ and BS needed to prove the Rangers made the right choice. NL trying to prove Rangers made a mistake. And in the end, I actually thought Schneider and Jones fared better than NL.

I actually voted Schneider one of the stars of the game not necessarily because he was one of the best 3 players but because I thought he had a very solid understated game. The kind of game I want him to play where you don't really notice him either way. I thought Jones was pretty decent. I think it's really striking how much strength he's put on in the offseason. The goal was nice for sure, but that pairing really wasn't bad and in some ways were better than the top 4 (of course, they were sheltered so that's an unfair comparison, but still).

I'm happy for Gauthier. He has been playing a smarter brand of hockey. I know we all focus on him making that same move every game and not scoring, but the rest of his game has become much better and that was apparent in the pre-season. So it's good to see him score a big goal.

Finally, I love the way Blais and Goody and Troubs responded after the Shesty hit. And the hit Kreider made was also great.

Gonna keep this post positive, but for those who've been following the game day thread know how frustrating I thought this game was overall. Team needs to grow a much more stout foundation to their game now. We cannot suddenly be a team that needs 5 to win every night.

Gauthier’s path to a NHL career as a regular is simple.

Get really good at defense (with his size and speed he should be excellent at transition defense) and digging in the corners and play yourself into being a good top 9 support player. Has every tool available to do this already so it’s not like he isn’t capable. The goal he scored today was silly, but he doesn’t even need to do shit like that to be good/effective.

Gauther needs to be the new Benoit Pouliot. It's really that simple. He doens't even need to become Grabner. I'll settle for Pouliot.

Pouliot had a ton of skill and was a staple on our best line.

If Gauthier becomes a 4th liner that's a shoo-in to pencil into the lineup everyday and scores 8 goals, I would be thrilled with that.

I simultaneously think he's a good player and think the expectations are too high, which why people think he's not a good player.

He's a hell of a lot more useful than Reaves for 90% of the games. Reaves deserves to be with the team, but his role has to be one of the good old enforcer now; You may play him in certain matchups where it may get extra physical.
Absolutely. Tho today is one match I would have liked him to play. Sit him against Anaheim and SJ and Colorado and even Winnipeg. But play him against the Isles, Dallas, Columbus, TB. Anyhow, injuries have been a thing too. Hopefully GG is more judicious going forward.

Kinda ironically, as I'm also a fan of the Avs, I wanted the Avs to play MacDermid on the Tuesday match because the Rangers are a tough team. But the reason is the same, play those tough guys on those few matches where it may get physical. Otherwise no reason to get Reaves in anymore. He looked good in his first year, but at this point he has nothing to give unless it's for intimidation or a fight.

That 4-3 goal being wiped out and turning into a 6-3 blowout has the looks of one of those symbolic turning points to end a slump, so let's hope thats what it was.

Will be interesting to see if Gallant sticks with these new D pairings next game, that seemed to stabilize things.

Even if Gauthier doesn't magically pull it together after that goal- this game indicates that NYR desperately need more speed at the forward position. It permits us to be taken seriously north-south and can get opponents to stop cheating as high up the ice as they play against our lateral playmakers. Last deadline we were looking for a volume shooter in Vatrano, this deadline we should be looking for a Jason Chimera type for the bottom 6.
Gonna keep saying it: 20-72-12 third line. That will get opponents back on their heels.

Imagine if Barry Trotz was coaching this team...
I'm not sure if that's good or bad thing. On one hand we would tighten up defensively....but we might be really ugly to watch.

I actually brought that up in the GDT this afternoon. It needs to happen.

Said it in the game thread: Miller and Troubs being split up is a FANTASTIC idea. Miller can show Schneider the ropes, and Toruba can take Jones under his wing.

Let's hope this was them turning the page.
Would really like to see a Fox-Miller pairing. Fox could throw sideline bombs to Miller a couple times each game. Would really keep the opposition on it’s toes and open up the center of the ice. Then Jones-Trouba and Lindgren-Schneider.

They only play well offensively when I don’t watch. I should just abstain from watching the games live and watch the youtube highlights.

Imagine that stood?

Pavelski was standing in Austin when the Stars gained the zone.

I'm generally against the offside review when we get the microscope out to look at skate blades but those types of calls are why it exists.

If he keeps this up, then sure. But he didn't play like this last year every game. And if you are a 4th liner and your only attribute is speed, you basically have to bring it every night. Ideally, you have someone better there. Gauthier is not a 4th line that gets you the cup.
Not a good take. If Gauthiere brings his speed and board play on a consistent basis and stays away from taking bad penalties - he’s a very good 4th liner. The problem previously was that he hasn’t done that CONSISTENTLY or played on the higher lines where more production is expected and he couldn’t deliver.

If he plays like has in the last two games, he absolutely needs to stay in the lineup.
