Maybe this is just some copium; but if Michkov was going to bring in any diva energy into the locker room long term , than Smith was the better pick all day with the fact that he is already homies with Macklin, and there will be/should be no ego clashes with them as this team turns into a contender. I watch a lot of basketball and 'The Rudy Gay Effect' is a very interesting case study, just saying

Macklin is looking like the true prize of the last 3 or 4 drafts, and with also stealing Dickinson late, I just don't see any reason to be mad about the last few drafts, or care about this stupid ass Michkov trolling ,or even Bedard comparissons. This is a classic 'I know what I got' type of thing; Mack is so damn good, the whole flow of the game changes when he's on the ice, and he's the youngest player in the league

only GMMG and Michkov know the nuances of the situation

going on the assumption that GMMG did his due dilligence and has reasonably good emotional intelligence, I think his reading of the situation is that the Michkov playing in San Jose would not have been the same Michkov playing in Philly... and if Will Smith is checking most/all of the boxes you're looking for anyway, why risk having a malcontent in your locker room

Grier’s done a hell of a job, but unless Michkov flat out said he didn’t want play for SJ, you take him at #4 10 times out of 10. And to not even interview him (if that was the case) is even more bizarre. The Russia/Ukraine stuff was silly, xenophobic nonsense. Fedotov came over from the KHL, right in the middle of the invasion, well before that draft.

That said, I am obviously very pleased we have Mack and I think he will be at least as good a player.
It was not nonsense in any way. The idea that it was nonsense is nonsense.

A player coming over just then is irrelevant. Michkov wasn't coming over then. That's why there was a risk.

And with where the Sharks were in their rebuild at that time--I mean, basically at the start, still pretty much completely underwater--the last thing they needed to do was pick a guy who was a complete unknown in terms of when, and even if, he would come over to the team.

I don't want to do it, but imagine a scenario in which the Sharks pick Michkov and don't win the lottery, and Michkov still as of today was still in Russia, maybe had intimated that he didn't want to come over to play for the Sharks. That is a BAD place for everyone to be in, from Grier to the fans.

exactly. he had to pick the surest thing given where the franchise was. we cannot count on high end FAs to mitigate misses the way philly can potentially. we all understood this at the time.

I just want people to stop aggressively pitting Celebrini and Michkov against each other. It’s fun to see them compete but some of the vitriol on the main boards is eye-roll-ey. I think it’s just cool to watch this new crop of superstars kick ass.
Totally agree. We should mention Bedard in those threads to throw them off the scent.

It has been a little unfair competition from day one since Celebrini is like 1,5 years younger playing a harder position and still keeping it close. It should be worrisome if Michkov didn't perform at his rate.
There is one way to figure this once and for all, who would you rather have as a building block for your future team?
