Mike Ruest an "average Jr. A coach ? Maybe. Highly respected by players, assistant coaches, GM's, owners, other coaches ? Absolutely.

Ruest will be back in this league.

Jason Clarke and Ian McInnis are very special. If not for their age difference, they could have been separated at birth.

If we give our players "average coaching" we get "average hockey"

Respect of his players, gms, management whatever...
CCHL needs "Good Coaching" to produce "good hockey players"

This league needs to get away from its brotherhood and clicks.

Move forward....

I agree with you 417. However, I think it is a challenge to find new, experienced, and proven coaching talent.

That being said. OJS has done a good job.

Ron Tugnutt, a former NHL player is another good coach / GM / owner. Although, I believe he may posses some of the Jason / Ian characteristics.

Dale McTavish in PLK is figuring things out.

I believe most agree that the situation in Kanata is troubling.

The coaching and management in Hawkesbury appears to be very solid, as long as the Hawks keep winning. If it turns south, I could see the "love in" end and everyone will run for cover.

Developing and recruiting good assistant coaches would make a lot of sense.

Please step up !!!!!

The reality is being a Junior 'A' coach means putting in 40-60 hours a week but getting little to no compensation for it so qualified coaches with jobs or other financial means to coach full time don't grow on trees.

Beyond that, you have a handful of good coaches - most of whom own the teams they coach - also not an avenue with many options available so you end up recycling anyone who can and wants to do it.

And let's face it, the Jason Clarkes, Peter Goulets and Ian MacInnis do benefit from having the financial means to bring in top talent every year so some of their greatness is based on finances.

Granted it takes more than money to build winners so in that respect, IM and PG do get my vote as top-notch coaches who have produced strong teams consistently.

JC finally got over the top last year but the primary reason he didn't win it all in the previous few was having his players tune him out come play-off time so the jury is still on JC in my opinion.

And the amazing lil known fact of IM and his Cornwall Colts, the GM / owner / coach does not spend a lot of cash to acquire talent. The deals are done mostly with picks and very little PDF's. When they won the league and attended the FPC in 2013, the Colts did not spend $5,000 for the season and played with the team that got them there. However, Summerside, the MHL team and host of RBC that year reportedly spent $50,000 to $60,000 in bolstering the roster. That included a reported $20,000 to acquire Kevin Bailey an over age OHL goalie (London Knights).

I don't believe PG has a big budget and is professional recruiter.

It appears JC is flush with cash and does not mind making strategic investments.

Dale MacTavish ? Spends money like a drunken sailor. All that will get you is a big hangover.

I have been reading all these posts about how great Gregg Kennedy is...From what I have seen he doesn't even show up in Kanata. If you are a good coach and have been given the head coaching job then show up. Leave the minor hockey team you are coaching and give 100% to the Lasers. Where is the coaches committment? I feel for the players and the assistant coaches. There need to be consistency and Kennedy is not showing any example of that.
Management made another bad move, unfortunatley.
Kennedy step up or step aside.......................

Well I was told give Kennedy time, He is a GREAT coach, please he cannot run a bench in JRA. He is a YES YES man. please stay in minor hockey. As for the management team go back to JRB. your out of your league. Players will not come back to Kanata.

coaching

lets reverse the scenario;

what if IM, DMc or JC were coaching Kanata (with the same owner's style)...would they succeed?

Drunken sailor ?
I can state as a matter of fact, PLK was outbid this summer for a few players by IM and the Cornwall Colts. To say Cornwall spends less on players then Pembroke this year and last year is likely false. I have not seen Cornwall's costs, but I do know Cornwall provided more cash incentives to players then Pembroke on 2 or 3 occasions this summer.
Further, the PLK has decreased their player acquisition spending from the days of Sheldon Keefe.

IMO, Sheldon Keefe was the best coach this league has seen in a long time. Ian McInnis and Jason Clarke are the best coaches in the league at current, with Peter Goulet getting honourable mention. Dale MacTavish is a quality recruiter, but has a lot to learn as a coach.

There is no argument that Sheldon Keefe was the best coach in the CCHL, of all time. I don't believe he spent a lot of cash on the acquisition of players. He is a very good recruiter and sold his reputation for building a winning team and a quality and respectful lifestyle.

I believe IM has adopted that philosophy. He sells the experience in the largest, not the best, arena in the league with a reasonable fan base. He sells his track record of building contenders year after year and for this year, they are selling the Fred Page Cup experience. If you examine the current roster, the Colts have a great number of local players. Not everyone wants to live up in the great white north. The Cornwall location of being one hour from Ottawa and Montreal on the USA border is attractive for some players.

Dale will figure out the coaching. The hockey brain trust of PLK tells me he spent a pile of cash last year to acquire key assets in his inaugural season and this year is no different. He probably has the best team in the league but does not know how to get the best from his players, yet. If he does figure it out, look out !

Do not confuse having more money with being better at recruiting or coaching there are plenty of good coaches and recruiters in the league." Kid (stud) do you want to play here for nothing or would rather play there for eight grand. Think about it (if you have too). City teams are at a huge disadvantage when it comes to revenue and it usually shows in the standings
I know most of personnel in the league and there are lots of good hockey people that just don't have the resources

I have to agree with Stickhandle. The city teams don't make any money running a franchise, therefore, they have to charge the full amount to their players. Quite the opposite happening in places like Pembroke, and Smiths Falls right now. The success that both Ottawa, and Nepean is having right now is surprising, but at the same time, I would have to think that they work their butt off to ice a competitive team. Gloucester, and Kemptville look good on paper, and I expect both teams to win more games in the coming weeks as some of their key players will be back from injuries. As for Cumberland, and Kanata, I won't even comment.

Maybe the league should drop those two city teams. Spread the good players around and strengthen the league.

This is the first time in the 12 years that I have followed the league that there is so much parity. After 1/3 of the season gone, here are my predictions for the overall standings:

1. Carleton Place (Sturtz and Baylis are the top 2 fwds in the league)
2. Ottawa (No idea how they have won 14 of 15, but they are getting it done)
3. Cornwall (Lack of offense after first line, but injured players will be back soon)
4. Pembroke (Best team on paper, but no discipline)
5. Brockville (Lots of talent, but lack structure)
6. Nepean (Dynamic first line, but not much after)
7. Smiths Falls (McMillan & Garvey will stabilize their back end)
8. Gloucester (The return of Verroneau will have a huge impact)
9. Hawkesbury (3 goals in their last 4 games is a concern)
10. Kemptville (Lots of injuries, but still not as good as anticipated)
11. Cumberland (If you don't recruit, you won't win)
12. Kanata (They'll be in last place for the next 3 years)

I Totally agree.

Well it is official, hell has frozen over.

Kanata 5 OJS 4 in OT.

5 goals on 17 shots. The OJS puck stoppers may have taken the night off.

Congrats to Kanata Lazers. This was a character win and a very entertaining game.

Kanata takes an early 2 to 0 lead on shaky goal tending (6 shots) , only to see OJS tie it up and then on to a 4-2 lead later in the third. The Lazers did not give up with a goal with 3 minutes to go and the tying goal with 1 minute remaining in the game. The refs give OJS a make up call in OT and the Lazers score on the PK and in over time.

Perhaps this will be the kick start that the Lazers needed. The Lazers and OJS get to do it all over again tomorrow night. Now that will be interesting.

Enjoy the win tonight boyz !!!

D. Potter, Goal, has been traded to the NOJHL Blind River team on Oct. 25

Bad break for the kid. Traded to the North and to a team who is getting shellacked every game. He played both games this weekend and gave up 10 goals. Welcome to Blind River !

Shock and Awe. Kanata 2 vs OJS 0 final BIG win. Huge.

The Lazers and coaching staff (??) have just earned a ton of respect from 11 teams.

Congrats to Brian Wilson G on a well earned 40 save shut out.
