Bedard got tangled up and taken down leading to a Saskatoon goal late (didnt see it well enough to know if it was penalty worthy or not) leading to him and Svozil losing it. Svozil got ejected apparently. Season over.
Honest question because I did not see a single game this year. Is Svozil's great offensive numbers simply a product of being on the ice with Bedard so much?
Here’s the video
He’s played in a men’s league in Czechia. It's a big jump from WHL to NHL, What does he really gain in last two regular season games of dreadful season? Does it feel like we should have sent him to Cleveland (less of a jump) hoping he could help the Monsters make the playoffs?
An NHL pay cheque for a morale boost then drop a level to the AHL having played a couple of NHL games development…..4d chess
I see no faults with this plan.Let the kid get some cash in his pocket to buy a couple nice outfits, let him hang with the guys, let him see how fast an NHL game is, let him tell his buddy Bedard how cool everyone in Columbus was to him, let him meet with the legend that is Kevin Collins, …
As I just said in the Monsters thread, would have preferred to see him go straight from WHL to AHL. Monsters might miss playoffs by one point and who knows...the kid might have made a difference in the Friday night game they lost by one goal. But hey, what do I know, two meaningless games in the NHL has to be worth way more than a couple of important AHL games plus potentially multiple AHL playoff games.I see Svozil had 2 assists in his first AHL game last night. I was really high on this kid when we drafted him. Once he adds NHL strength, this kid could be a legit stud with his skills and brain. Don't think he'll ever be a banger but I could see him and Jiricek as a pair (a great pair) long term. Really excited to see how he does in his first pro year (North America) next year.
It's also possible they promised the kid some possible NHL games. They might be meaningless games to you, but that's a lifelong dream now fulfilled for Svozil. As I just said in the Monsters thread, would have preferred to see him go straight from WHL to AHL. Monsters might miss playoffs by one point and who knows...the kid might have made a difference in the Friday night game they lost by one goal. But hey, what do I know, two meaningless games in the NHL has to be worth way more than a couple of important AHL games plus potentially multiple AHL playoff games.
Not to mention those post season games could have really been beneficial to...I don't know...maybe Cole Sillinger! Ceulemans, Jiricek, Knazko, Greaves, etc.
I dont know if Mateychuk challenged himself to play a more pro game or what but hes a bit more conservative than he used to be. It’s kind of a positive and negative. He still makes some pretty shifty plays look extremely easy but I dont see him darting through the defense and rushing the puck in the same way. Made a nifty little play just now to draw a penalty but there was a bit of embellishment on his part.
Again I say this knowing they are playing Winnipeg and I havent seen him a ton this year so maybe hes just playing the role he needs to for his team to have the best chance to win
He gets talked about less because not many of us watch the WHL and its easier to talk about point totals. He also didnt make the WJC last year so thats another thing to not talk about. That said I bet if we polled the forum now most would have him at our 2nd best prospect behind Jiricek where he deserves to beI haven’t watched a single minute of actual gameplay of his this year, and I understand the limited amount of overall looks with him playing in the WHL, and that Svozil gets the obvious boost in eyes playing with Bedard.
That said, whether in relation to the hype that it seems Sillinger, Jiricek, Ceulemans, and now Svozil (and others) have gotten at different times, IMO, it really seems like Mateychuk has been looked at as an “afterthought” and/or extremely undervalued/underrated by many of our fans.
I understand his age and that relationship between him being looked at as being close to being a CBJ player, as it should be noted that he is a full 1.5 years younger than Svozil, BUT, that is not really consistent with how many have treated the last few years and young guys playing legit roles on the team, whether looking at Sillinger and others in the past, or moving forward with a guy like Jiricek, Ceulemans, or Svozil making the roster.
1 thing I noticed from some highlight video from the year before and was “substantiated” by I believe a YouTube comment, is that Mateychuk was actually used pretty often in the slot on the PP, essentially as a forward. They would seemingly “rotate”, but, he would end up near the net quite often.
Not checking his PP statistics, that could be another reason why his goal totals took a bit of a hit, and his overall point production didn’t increase. That said, and you point out about him playing/changing his role to help his team WIN. That is what is really important, and more than likely is the case, whether it was a decision made by him, his WHL coach, or something asked of him from the CBJ.
Whether it’s Bedard, Svozil, Mateychuk, or anybody else in juniors, as we’ve seen with countless amount of guys in the past, you can only take away so much from point production or “success” at that level. I take nothing away from Svozil as a player, as I like what he does, I just find the overall lack of “hype” for Mateychuk quite fascinating, as Svozil is quite clearly a “poor man’s” version of him, from my POV.
Least talked about CBJ 1st rounder in history??
Even just being around the tournament is good, though. Workouts, etc.Svozil and Jiricek will join Czech's pre-WC team. I think neither needs to play additional games this season so can't say I'm excited about the news.
Both will have all of June, July, and August to train and get rest. With a brief thing for development camp and traverse city before main camp.Svozil and Jiricek will join Czech's pre-WC team. I think neither needs to play additional games this season so can't say I'm excited about the news.
