Malatesta will miss the last 3 games of the season with an upper body injury. They think he'll be ok for the first game of the playoffs on March 31st.

It's a bit annoying situation, but I don't think a player has ever been ruined by playing for too long in CHL.
This is true, going back is better than having him drown in the NHL (hello Cole Sillinger)

But its unfortunate because he's not really going to have any growth next year. It can only go "bad" for him. If he gets 100 points, people will say "yeah well he SHOULD do that." And if he doesn't it will be seen as a massive regression for his development.

Almost happened to Dylan Strome.
Coyotes kept him down in the OHL and when he finally ' made' the NHL he wasn't nearly the player he was in the OHL.
He was a late bloomer. - and he still isn't what he was expected to be.

I’d say/ask is there a risk for him to learn bad habits if he’s way too good for the league?

How would it challenge him/develop him?

I do think there's some risk of that for Dumais in junior.

He has mastered what it takes to win at that level, the problem is that the next level requires something else, we don't want him to overly adapt to junior. So you send him down there and ask him to work on things that don't help him win those games.

Some things do overlap of course. He would be better at every level if he used his strength more to lever opponents off pucks and to get better body position.

He could also work on his two way game and develop better habits.

He could but would he?

Would it more likely ending up as him toying with the competition.

I’d like to ramp up his competition and push him outside his comfort zone

I hope they find a way to send him to europe to play more physical and learn pro game.

He’s been just scoring at a ridiculous pace this year that another year would feel like a wasted development year

He can't be sent to Europe, it's either Halifax or Columbus.

I doubt he'll be NHL ready next year but it might be good for him to get him some NHL games next Fall before sending him down, so he knows better what to work on.

Everything about Dumais’ timetable was known before he was drafted. You could argue that this season is even better than could have been expected, thus creating added concern for coasting/bad habits next year, but he was already putting up stupid crazy numbers.

So this whole “another year in juniors will hurt Dumais” is either Jarmo‘s fault or just one of those things.

Lol wut. I don't think there has ever been a draft table discussion where someone says "we can't draft this kid because he'll thoroughly dominate juniors next year and then be too good to go back". Let's be clear that we're talking about a relatively small problem here.

Exactly. But spending an awful lot of energy on it.

Dumais ended the season with 54+86=140 in 64gp. And he hasnt even turned 19 yet.

Going to be interesting to see where he'll slot in on offseason prospect polls.

Here's another plan for Dumais next year, basically a modification of the Shane Wright plan.

Start him on the NHL roster, playing a couple games but mostly just practicing with the team. After five games out of the lineup he becomes eligible for a two week conditioning stint in the AHL. You can time it so that the two weeks covers a lot of Monsters games. You then have to call him up, and you can then practice him or play him as needed until sending him to the World Juniors and then the Q after that.

I think it would be a great learning experience despite the lower games played.

He'd still have to look pretty good in camp to earn this. It just gives us an option in case he shows up in camp and makes a push.

One consideration is that the Jackets might be short on available roster spots coming out of camp. We'll see how it shakes out.

Sounds like a very Blue Jackets way of developing a player...:sarcasm:

This sounds like a great idea.

The CBJ weren't creative enough to get Sillinger down to the AHL in a timely fashion, so I have little faith they'd be creative enough to pull this off.

One reason they might be short on roster spots could be the particular skill set Voronkov may bring. AK Bars onto the semifinals against Avangard winning their series against Admiral this morning

Sounds like a very disruptive season that can accomplish as much bad as good

I wouldn't do it unless he looks really really good in camp, just to make sure it wouldn't hurt his confidence. But I don't mind the low gp, he needs practice more than gp anyways.
