Dumais is clearly too good for the QMJHL. Is there any chance he could surprise and make the team similar to how DeBrincat made the Hawks in his D+2 season?

Let's give him a long look in pre-season. He'd have to clearly outplay a lot of guys to make it and I think that's unlikely. But if he does then I'd say sure, start him in the NHL. You can send him down later if he fades.

Yes he will be too good for the Q next year and yes they should explore options but I’d rather have him there again than in Columbus. Yes, I’m making that judgement without seeing him in camp.

This is where I'm leaning unless he's going like 2 p/60 through preseason and then let him cook in the NHL until he starts to struggle and then send him back down. A little bit of confidence knowing he can play against men would do wonders. The hard part is instilling in him that while he's in the Q he needs to work on certain aspects of his game against weaker competition, not just racking up the points.

I think if he does end up going down the FO really needs to emphasize that they don't care how many points he scores, that they really want him to focus on X, Y and Z.

I know the agreement between the NHL and CHL doesn't allow Dumas to play in the AHL but is there a rule/contract/something else that prevents him from jumping the pond and playing in Europe?

Yes both the Blue Jackets et and the Mooseheads have to agree.

So just to be clear, when a player is drafted into the CHL, he is the property of the CHL until they reach the age of twenty or make an NHL roster? Is there any precedence at all for a CHL player to make the jump to another league? Seems to me there may be occasions when the CHL might actually be hurting a player's development by forcing them to stay in the league.

During covid players like Clarke for example made the jump. At the end of the day the CHL team is losing a valuable asset for nothing, not good buisness. They want to win not completely be a development league and bend to the NHLs will

Not drafted into the CHL, when he signs a CHL contract. The CHL is a league like any other, a player can't play in a league while under contract with another. That's what the NHL/CHL transfer agreement is, a pre-negotiated 'out' from a CHL contract to play in the NHL.

Wait, the CHL (Canadian Juniors) is not a draft based league? Dumais' QMJHL profile page says he was drafted in the 1st round (18th overall). Are you then suggesting he signs a contract (I am asking because I don't know). Is it a one year contract renewable each season, is it a two year deal, is it a four year deal only voidable by his team? What are the parameters of this contract?

Here’s an interesting article about the CHL-NHL agreement that was recently extended up to 2029.

Thanks for the link but I am not concerning myself with the NHL-CHL agreement, this would be more of a CHL-European Leagues agreement. Does that exist? I am talking about a player choosing to move on from the CHL to play in Europe against men because he feels he has achieved all he can in the CHL. What does the commitment between a CHL organization and a player look like?

It must be a contract for the duration of their junior years if they can’t sign in Europe unless their CHL team releases them.

Dumais 2 goals and an assist today. The play he made at the blueline on the PP is Marchandesque. 4:44 mark

His NHLPe has gone up every single year. I’m getting my hopes up..but statistically we are due for a late round gem right?

Its very possible. If the skating continues to improve and we take our time it could pay off huge. He seems like a kid that takes all the doubt aboht him personally and will work to prove them wrong. The fact we have prospects like Dumais and Svozil as finds in the 3rd round behind the top end prospects is very exciting

IIRC he is the first QMJHL player to hit 130 points since Radulov.

I think he is saying the control is not because he was drafted but because he signed the contract. If a CHL team drafts a kid, that kid could still go play overseas or do whatever he wants. But once he signs the contract, then he is under team control until he is 20 or makes an NHL team.

Details aside the thing to remember about the situation is that the CHL doesn’t care whether it is doing the right thing for a player’s development. The teams want to win games and compete for championships.

Everything is related. CHL teams need money to develop players. They get that money with people in the stands. They get people in the stands by offering a good show. They offer a good show by winning games and having future NHLers on the ice. Developing elite athletes = money. Halifax is one of the most profitable franchises in the CHL but many of them are non-profit organizations.

And… what’s the point of sport if at the end of the day it isn’t winning? Every athlete on the ice thrives for it.

The NHL must also thinks it’s better for players’ development because they wouldn’t have agreed for another 7 years. I doubt the NHL would agree to let players under 20 go to Europe. They would prioritize AHL beforehand.

I was of course oversimplifying in response to a stated notion that suggests the agreement might not be best for a player’s development. I didn’t mean to imply they don’t care if the players get better, only that they are not driven by developing players for the team that holds his NHL rights.
