random but does anyone know what ended up happening to kerby rychel? I see that he last played professional hockey in 2020. no idea what he does now. I remember he had tons of promise when drafted… I also remember getting my ex girlfriend a jersey of his because she had a lowkey crush on him lmao. did you guys think he had promise/tons of potential when he was with us?

Rychel's skating didn't develop. Maybe his dad was a pain for us but I'd imagine he'd be playing somewhere if he could keep up.

sorry for the newbie question, but what is the reasoning for signing him now?
Idk, maybe development folks happened to be in town to see him and figured now is a good moment to get the paperwork done? And in the summer it was too early because they weren't sure yet if he was good enough to get signed already?

The timing is kind of arbitrary because the contract doesn't begin until he goes pro in a couple years.

But it signals confidence in the kid. You only have 50 contracts and you don't want to give one to a Karlberg or a Stucker that you don't think you'll ever use. But Dumais has done a good job and this sends a nice signal of confidence.

At a bare minimum it makes him eligible for an end of season call-up if his team get eliminated from the playoff early. They are currently in 2nd place and the regular season ends on 3/25. Highly unlikely with 3 weeks left in the NHL season but if they are a 1st round elimination its possible.

There are also occasions where the player and his family need the money sooner rather than later and the team accommodates that knowing the player will be signed at some point regardless. Not saying at all that’s what happened here but it does happen. A notable example was Radek Faksa.

Would the money be a signing bonus then? He can't collect salary until he goes pro.

a better skater than silly though lol.
Kerby's issue wasn't necessarily just 'skating' IMO. Poor work ethic/conditioning was a big part of it. His skating issue was more just him not keeping his feet moving in the o-zone.
