Can someone provide their recent season assessments of Svozil and Knazko? Thanks.
Recent campaigns for both Svozil and Knazko have gone pretty much according to expectations in my view.

I've seen about 1/5 of Svozil's games this season, both WJC games for Team Czechia and handful of Pats games in WHL. He was 6th in scoring for Regina (10-31-41 in 59gp), played on the 2nd pairing almost all year, PP2 qb, PK1&2 defender, usually the 6th man on ice in the final minutes when Pats were trailing and decided to pull their goalie. It's not a super impressive season if you just look at the stats, but when you take into account the lack of support on a poor team and the challenges of adjusting to NA hockey/new culture/different language/travelling between games in WHL etc., I guess he did alright after all.

He looked smart and poised in all situations, did a lot of same good things that we saw in Traverse city and in CBJ camp. Much like with 99% of hockey prospects, the most important step for him is just to get stronger and quicker. I like where he is right now in his development, I'm confident that he will take those needed steps in the next couple of years.

Very particular thing about his game that kept bugging me was his habit to sometimes play too casually in DZ. He wasn't always reacting quickly to situations when there was for example a loose puck in the slot after a blocked shot, or if the puck took a weird bounce off the boards and ended up on opposing player's stick. He doesn't always go right at the puck carrier (or the player he has to cover) and try to check him off the puck like Gavrikov. His DZ defending reminds me a lot more of Werenski than those aggressive defensive dmen who always want to take away time and space from opponents immediately. I don't know if that's his style of play, or has it something to do with undeveloped physique/lack of condition, and in those situations he just wants to wait and save energy for more crucial play. Whatever the case is with that habit, I want to see it cleaned up.

Knazko's WHL team in Seattle advanced to 2nd round in the playoffs so his season isn't over yet. This spring I have seen 5-6 Thunderbirds games. Knazko has been on left side in 2nd-pair and a PP2 QB, with some PK responsibility as well.

If Svozil has to take one step forward in his skating speed to get ready for NHL, Knazko has to take at least 2 or 3. I've seen him getting into trouble in puck retrievals and zone exits when he decides to stop skating as he has puck on his stick or is about to receive the puck from his D partner. If doesn't find a passing option right away while stanging still, he is forced to accelerate and try to carry puck out of the zone. The problem is he isn't fast enough to beat forecheckers in a skating race. He can somehow survive at that level of competition with his skating flaws but there's no way he could continue doing that stop-and-start-in-DZ stuff in the NHL.

He also needs to be stronger on skates. Falls kind of easily, and too often, although his balance has looked better than earlier in the year at WJC. He likes to lay hits so I wouldn't call him a soft player. Balance/physicality is not one of his strengths, but it doesn't look as concerning at the moment as the skating speed. Defensive game apart from physical play seemed ok in my mind. Not great, not terrible.

Passing game has looked very great. He's able to make sharp and nifty passes with both forehand and backhand. Those skills come in handy on the PP. If he's going to play a full season with the Jackets sometime in the future - and I'm doubtful he will - that's an area where he's going to shine.

Thanks for the detailed scouting report
I know there are better threads for this discussion, but speaking of Svozil and Knazko, I began to wonder how CBJ is going to solve and assemble D pairs in Columbus and Cleveland for next season. I guess it's safe to predict that some of our D prospects who played elsewhere this year are going to make the jump to NHL/AHL.

In 2021-22 we had 15 defensemen in Columbus and Cleveland playing at least 40 games on either team:

Werenski
Gavrikov
Bean

Boqvist
Peeke
Kukan
Carlsson
Bayreuther

Christiansen

Schemitsch
Simpson
Clayton
Berni
Sweezey

Harrington

Bolded names are signed through 2022-23.

Let's assume we re-sign Boq, Blanks, Carlsson, somehow acquire "Chychryn"/top-4 D through a trade and grab some UFA for bottom-pair tough guy role, then we'd have 13 of those 15 "spots" settled for 2022-23. So my next question would be who are going to fill those remaining roster holes? Some of Knazko, Svozil and Bjorkvik-Holm? Johannesson or maybe Hjorth? How many of unsigned Monsters dmen are coming back? How about that Swedish guy Boumedienne had kept an eye on? What if we win the lottery and get Jiricek or Nemec?

Ideas, insights?

My suspicion is that Kukan, Schemistsch, Simpson, Clayton and Harrington aare all gone. Carlsson is likely qualified but does he go back to Sweden? I also don't see them signing Hjorth this year and don't see Johannesson as a priority to get here next year. I do think Bjorgvik-Holm likely ends up in Cleveland next year and Svozil and Knazko are wild cards. They could spend another year in junior but I could see them moving to Cleveland as well to start to get experience against men and higher competition. Not unreasonable to think one is moved in a deal either.

I think Cleveland's defense is very young next year but they'll need to add a veteran or two for call up and guidance of the young guys. That could be Bayreuther. Carlsson showed a little more at the NHL level and maybe he keeps that 7th dman spot even with changes to the top 6. I can also see a guy like Bean being moved. He holds value and is still young wtih 2 years left on his deal (then RFA).

A good question you pose... I think my early thoughts would be something like:

CBJ
Werenski - New player (my daily Chychrun plug)
Gavrikov - Boqvist
Bean - Peeke
Christiansen/Carlsson (one sticks, one to Cleveland)

Monsters
Bayreuther - Christiansen/Carlsson (whoever doesn't stick?)
Bjorgnik-Holm - Berni
Knazko - Sweezy
Svozil and add another vet and insert in lineup (I have no idea how they would line up in Cleveland but would think they would carry 8 D-men with some that can come up to Columbus

Going to be interesting for sure...

My presumption is that Knazko and Svozil need to stay in junior another year. Knazko might not even crack the AHL roster at this point and Svozil for his part would be better served with #1D minutes with Connor Bedard than as a 4/5D with Cleveland. Svozil still needs to get stronger and more assertive and to take a step offensively too.

CBJ
Werenski - Blanks
Gavrikov - Chychrun/Zub/other trade addition
Bean/Boq - Peeke. (One of Bean or Boq are part of the trade)
Bayreuther/Carlsson

Monsters
Christiansen - Schemitsch
Holm - Berni
Simpson - Sweezy/Clayton

Blanks here is in the Jackets top 4 because he looked like that caliber of D in his brief showing, but obviously there is a chance that his play will fall off and Peeke or Bean/Boqvist could steal that job.

Christiansen doesn't look close to NHL caliber to me. Other than firing the biscuit he is an AHLer and needs more time down there.

I am maybe more of a Zub guy than a Chychrun guy. Chychrun is a big shooter like Werenski whereas Zub's skills are more narrowly tailored to the Jackets needs, and I think he would provide better value relative to the trade cost. I just want an RD who can drive play and play shutdown and I don't care about his sniping ability. We have limited PPQB spots and I don't want to pay extra for that sniping ability.

This is why I'm rooting for sweeps or at least dominant 5 game series first round. I want to see some teams melt down and panic which would hopefully open up this market some. Chychrun is available but doesn't fit perfectly, vice versa for Zub.

Yeah we're just hoping that Zub and Ottawa can't come to terms on a deal this summer. They will trade him if they can't sign him, and I bet he would love to come to Columbus to play with Gavi and Elvis.

You never know when teams might run into trouble. Winnipeg has several defenders that are rumored to want out, unfortunately I don't see a great fit for any of them with us.

Bean and Boqvist are RH, Gavrikov and Chychrun are LD. If similar, so TOP 4:

Werenski, Blankenburg
Chychrun, Boqvist/Bean

but I think we should start with our young d-men and this season would show his qualities. I hope Bean and Boqvist will come stronger.

To AHL, don't forget Knazko can't already play in WHL in the next season.

Bean is a lhd who can play the right side. Strength will never be either of their strong point but Bean impressed me this year compared to my expectations and Boqvists needs a strong offseason plus grow his game in a way to protect himself while remaining effective. I feel like hes capable of being more elusive than he actually is and has a good stick when hes actually aggresive but needs consistancy

In regards to Svozil, Regina is such a mess after going for it a few years ago when they hosted the Mem Cup. A season ticket holder buddy of mine said he wouldnt be surprised if the Pats move Bedard simply because they dont have the assests to gear up for run with him before hes gone and just wasting his talent. Howe came out of nowhere though so that may make them believe they have a chance atleast until deadline time possibly

Yes I was wondering that. I would guess that Regina will try and make a run, however quixotic it may be. And if they don't and they sell off, then Svozil ends up with a playoff team either way. I would hope he gets #1D minutes though - after playing third pair in the Czech league for so long he has very little experience running the offense and being the main PP guy and so on.

He'll only be 20 next year, so unless I'm missing something Knazko should be able to play there. Unless none of the teams want to use an overager spot on him.

I'm big on Zub too. I just don't know that OTT would have any interest at all in moving him. Good synopsis. Since I neglected to include Blankenburg, I know I was just shooting off the cuff and in a rush. My bad. However, I do think Knazko ends up in Cleveland. I also think one of Knazko/Svozil could be part of a trade deal too. I'm higher on Richard and Makarov for long term potential and, of course, a little longer term development timeline.

I know it but I doubt Jarmo will still let him play in CHL. I think either AHL or Europe if he doesn't get a spot in NHL (I doubt it). Of course he he isn't traded what is very possible. Or Svozil.

I think Knazko could be an upgrade to Monsters blueline, he could split the PPQB minutes with Christiansen. Not necessarily a significant upgrade though, so all things considered it still might be better for him to spend another year in juniors if possible.

Svozil heading back to Regina makes a lot of sense in theory. I'm just not sure if that's an ideal place for him to be, at this stage of development. They certainly did not look like a well-organized team last year, and it's unclear if that is going to change for the better anytime soon. OJBH's Mississauga team in OHL on the contrary has been very sound defensively, their 5vs5 play indicates they might play under some kind of functional structure, and they also have more defensively responsible players. My strong yet unproved belief is OJBH gets to work with better coaches on a daily basis than Svozil, so I hope that he too would be surrounded by people who could help him more individually, even if it meant 3-5 less minutes per game for Svozil. I really wouldn't mind if Pats decided to sell both Bedard and Svozil to another team.

If OJBH was sent back to Mississauga in the fall, I believe he would be getting more duties than in the previous seasons. Their #1 dman Del Mastro signed an ELC with Chicago last month, he'll play in NHL or AHL next year. Mississauga has at least 2 defensemen ahead of OJBH in the depth chart - 2002 born, undrafted Danish import Kasper Larsen and '22 draft eligible Chas Sharpe. OJBH would step from #4D into #3D role. He's already a core piece of their PK, with #3D minutes he would also get more shifts on PP2. To be clear, this is just me speculating OJBH's potential future role with the Steelheads, other than Del Mastro I have no clue who of their D are staying or leaving Mississauga, and how they're going to re-shape their roster for next year.

(edit: nvm what I said about Del Mastro 100% leaving OHL, he is 2003 born, might go back to Mississauga after all. Could have sworn there were some social media folks couple weeks ago convincing that he'll play in Chicago next year.)
However, I do think Knazko ends up in Cleveland. I also think one of Knazko/Svozil could be part of a trade deal too. I'm higher on Richard and Makarov for long term potential and, of course, a little longer term development timeline.
Svozil-trade would be tough news to swallow for me personally. Imo he and Ceulemans are our best D prospects. With the hockey IQ alone, his upside is enormous. I think there's a great chance he will become a fantastic two-way defender, and a long-term solution for our top-4. I can't say for certain Svozil's a better prospect than Ceulemans since I haven't watched his NCAA games, but I'm sure Svozil doesn't hold much less value than him.

I'm very interested in the training camp:

I thought he had one more year on his deal. I'll have to read the report, maybe they agreed on a transfer or he goes back if not in NHL.

Holy crap I love this news. Been high on him since his draft and glad he finally started to put it together this year. Still has some work to do but he's another mid-round pick with a lot of promise.

(edit: nvm what I said about Del Mastro 100% leaving OHL, he is 2003 born, might go back to Mississauga after all. Could have sworn there were some social media folks couple weeks ago convincing that he'll play in Chicago next year.)

I'm with you on this. I haven't watched him nearly as much as I believe you have but he was, at one point, considered a first round talent. I think he's shown he has tremendous upside. I'm like so many others though... I love our prospects and could be easily jaded. Certainly think the future holds a lot of upside even beyond the current roster. Will be very interesting if we can pull Nemec or Jiricek this year to add to RHD. That would put a really solid pool in all areas aside from Center (high end upside needed).

I thought he had one more year on his deal. I'll have to read the report, maybe they agreed on a transfer or he goes back if not in NHL.
I would imagine this being the case. The chances of him making your roster are basically nil anyway.

One year in Finland, then into the AHL and then looking for that NHL roster spot.

I'm big on Zub too. I just don't know that OTT would have any interest at all in moving him.
They won't, it would have to be Zub's choice to not extend there.

I go Svozil > Richard > Knazko. I haven't seen enough of Makarov to say about him.

With their future roles and past experience in mind

- I think Holm doesn't really need to be a top guy in juniors. We would love it if he became a #4 shutdown guy in the NHL someday, and the AHL is good training for that.

- I'm wondering if Svozil might actually benefit from being the top minute eater on a chaotic team. He had those years of structure in the Czech league, now bring on the chaos. I have no doubt that he could learn the more algorithmic aspect of defense even better at a later date if he had to, he's so smart. I'm wondering if we can get more magic out of him.
