Abramov was a minus three last night but still one of the best players on the ice, had no points but was robbed on a couple of occassions. His team is freaking terrible. They lost 5-2.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that these are the players who can sign late-season ATOs with the Monsters this season once their amateur seasons end:

Bird
Sherwood
Thurkauf
Kolesar
Collins
Ruopp

Abramov, Dubois, and Peeke cannot until 2017-18. Not sure about Thome's status in this regard.

I think Abramov and Dubois could, unless something has changed. I know Jenner did in '11-'12 after his team's season was over (he was not quite 19). There's no point in prohibiting players from finishing the season in the AHL after their junior team is done for the year.

I'm pretty sure a collegiate player could (Werenski did last year), but obviously, they would be done playing in college after that.

Ruopp could have played in the AHL this year. He turned 20 last June.

Not saying anyone is advocating to have Ruopp in the AHL right now, but he is definitely best served to be in the WHL right now. He is our #1 defensemen and captain, so it's good for him to be in that role, and progress on last year for being a reliable two way defender.

He's never really going to be a high producing point producer, so if you are solely stat-watching, you may think he isn't progressing much, but he is. He is seeing zero PP time right now, especially with the addition of Brendan Guhle and now Nikita Popugaev...and Ruopp is best served to be on the bench anyways as he plays in every other high-stress situation.

He has a real feisty side to his game too, as seen in his PIM totals. There is a reason he is the captain - he is willing to fight anyone in the WHL to stand-up for a teammate, for any reason. He's tough along the boards and in front of the net, and with his size you would definitely expect to see that from him.

He is smart defensively and knows how to get his body and stick in the lanes to deny dangerous chances - there's a reason he is on the top PK unit, and on the ice to defend leads. He is smart physically...he isn't always running around for that big hit, but he is definitely scanning the opposition everytime they come down his side of the ice.

For a round 5 selection, this is the type of player that I could see carving out a career as a bottom pairing, shutdown minded defensemen. Or at least becoming a career AHLer if given time, and developed correctly.

We don't really care about the latter.

How's his skating?

Why not? We've seen the value of a guy like Ryan Craig. He could also be a decent injury call-up in that situation.

Exactly. AHL veterans are still important to NHL organizations. Every AHL team needs those veterans to help make them a good team...you can't just have an AHL team loaded with young prospects.

I feel I should make mention of Kole Sherwood's game tonight for Flint.

1st star- 5 goals, 2 assists. The opposing team might have had some goaltending issues tonight as they lost 11-2.

Yes, but not for a draft pick. Craig types are signed year to year. You don't spend draft picks on them because you don't have to, just sign them.
