Merzlikins said in a dev camp interview that he wants to play every game possible. He's got the best chance to do that in Lugano. I don't mind him being there, especially with Korpi and Forsberg likely needing to split AHL time still.

Yes, Lugano is a great place for him. I don't think it's because he needs 40 games rather than 30.

When you just say 40 games v 30 games, yeah it doesn't seem like a big deal. But 30 games in the AHL is less than half of the regular season's schedule. 40 games in the Swiss League is like a goalie playing a Rinne/Lundqvist-esque workload (50 games total in the Swiss National League A). Not to mention he gets Champions Hockey League games and various international tournament opportunities for Latvia while he's overseas.

Fewer games on the bench is what matters to Merzlikins it seems, and that's likely what fueled his decision to sign the contract.

The Jackets want their developing goalies to get a number of games. It doesn't matter whether it's a half or a quarter or three quarters of a season. Different leagues have different seasons and that doesn't matter to us as long as our guys get a good number of games (>30).

Just to be feisty early this morn, source?

Lake Erie Monsters doesn't even have a dedicated goalkeeping coach? That is no place for a goalie.

At the Calder Cup rally, they introduced Manny Legace as their goaltending coach. He was the coach in Springfield for the team before they moved to Cleveland. It might have been on a part-time basis, but LEM got some pretty spectacular goaltending this year, and Legace was a 12ish year NHL veteran.

I agree Tulip: perhaps you should write letters to Dan Snyder & John McConnell asking them to bring in a goalie coach. Columbus is only 40 minutes away, but you are correct in saying that goalies need daily supervision and development.

It still doesn't cover for full-time goalie coaching. HC Lugano had two of those this season serving under head coach Dog Shredder and his playbook of two dogs and a fox.

Well there is quite the difference in between relied on in every night or being the back-up, no matter how much you play.

That's head coach Doug Shedden, before anyone gets their hopes up that there's actually a coach named "Dog Shredder."

I don't think I need a source to understand that number of games played is what we're interested in, not percentage of a season. That should be obvious.

That part is. I was a bit curious as to why the 30 was a minimum. I'd think we'd want higher. Which is why I think we face a problem getting enough starts for Korpi and Forsberg if they both play well out of the gate. If one stands out then a 46-30 split still meets your criteria.

I say 30 because it's how much a good starter in college will get, and it's how much a good developing NHL #2G like Cory Schneider got. And in neither case does it hurt the goalie to go that route - if it did you'd see a lot more trepidation by teams about what leagues they let their goalies play in.

I suspect 30 starts is fine because goalies have so much to work on with technique, it's not like the other 230 nights a year go to waste.

Major major inspired me to do my own top 20 prospects before the draft.

*Note: I am not counting Korpi or Rychel as graduated. My list is a projection of how good they are, can be, and the likelihood they get there.

1. Bjorkstrand
2. Werenski
3. Milano
4. Rychel
5. Korpisalo
6. Anderson
7. Kolesar
8. Carlsson
9. Paliotta
10. Forsberg
11. Bittner
12. Zaar
13. Kukan
14. Merzlikins
15. Heatherington
16. Nutivaara
17. Hannikainen
18. Gavrikov
19. Stenlund
20. Vainio

So, I posted this pre-draft. And since I am going away for a little bit, I figured I would post my updated list after the draft. It hasn't changed much, but there was obviously some changes.

1. Bjorkstrand
2. Werenski
3. Dubois
4. Korpisalo
5. Milano
6. Anderson
7. Kolesar
8. Carlsson
9. Forsberg
10. Abramov
11. Bittner
12. Zaar
13. Peeke
14. Kukan
15. Merzlikins
16. Heatherington
17. Nutivaara
18. Hannikainen
19. Gavrikov
20. Stenlund

Yeah Bjorkstrand isnt above Werenski and Dubois and no goalie should be in your top 5 or 6 prospects unless hes a Vail/Gibsom and Korpisalps not. Abramov and Bittner are alao both ahead of Kolesar.

You are most certainly allowed to have those opinions.

If you're putting Bjorkstrand ahead of Werenski, you must be expected a serious stall in Werenski's progression. He's almost at Bjorkstrand's level now, and he has 2+ years to pass him.
