What makes you doubt Kukan's ability more than any of our other defensive prospects with the exception of Werenski? He's got the size, he's got the professional experience, he's got the puck moving ability. There's no reason he can't be an NHL player.

Besides, who bumps him out of the top 10? Zaar? Eh, maybe. But he has no NHL experience. Bittner? Injured virtually all year, no professional track record. Carlsson? Probably higher potential than Kukan but he's like 3 years younger and much more raw.

Most of what goes into ranking a prospect is their potential (along with their likelihood of reaching it). I would rank all 3 ahead of Kukan.

I based my rankings on more than just potential. If I based it solely on potential then Gavrikov would barely be in the top 20 while Veeti Vainio sniffs the top 5.

I'm also really curious about how you value the potential of 19 year olds so much more than what Kukan has ACTUALLY DONE in the NHL.

So, I guess you rank Kukan ahead of Matthews? :sarcasm:

We obviously value different things when ranking prospects. That is fine. I just can't rank Player B ahead of Player A when Player A has more potential. If both players reach their potential, Player A will be better. Now, if Player A's likelihood of reaching their potential is really low, then player B can be ranked higher.

...and this is why HF has that "potential * % chance of reaching it" rating setup.

Others count on potential. You, Nuti, play the game. Leave the counting on potential to others! But you, Nuti, play; for the places which Fortuna awards to others, the game transfers to you.

My biggest issue with Rychel is in 30 some games in Columbus he failed to make it off the fourth line.
He's simply still not ready.
Who does he displace in the top 6? Wenny, Saad, Jenner, Foligno, Dubi, and Cam are all undoubtedly better players. He's not a center so that wipes out 1 of the 3 3rd line spots. Hartnell pre-TDL was undoubtedly better than Rychel and Calvert brings speed that Rychel doesn't.

I don't think it's that he isn't ready, I think it's just he brings a playing style that we already have a lot of, and from guys who do it better.

Not sure where to put this, but I'm in a Mock draft on here and it revolves around a U23 team (1993 birthdate or later), we can keep 5-15 guys, who would your most important U23 guys be.

I have 3 D laid out:

Murray
Jones
Werenski

But would love some help in the forward and goalie department

From The Cannon, here's a list of who needs to be signed by June 1:

http://www.jacketscannon.com/2016/5/28/11807064/two-prospects-the-cbj-need-to-sign-by-june-1st

I would hope Elvis and I'll go with the Cannon on the other two.

To avoid a repeat of the Peter Quenneville fiasco that gave me bragging rights for life, I'll cite the relevant sections of the CBA on the unsigned prospects.

Collins and Bird both currently fall under Section 8.6(c); since both are still enrolled in college, there's no point in exploring further contingency plans. If they stay in school and graduate on time, their rights are held through August 15, 2018 (8.6(c)(i)). If they don't stay in school and withdraw before graduating, their rights are held through June 1, 2018 (Section 8.6(c)(ii), or as I call it, the "How can I know more about the CBA than everyone else/You're welcome for keeping Peter Quenneville" provision.

Pelletier was drafted out of the QMJHL, and is thus bound by Section 8.6(a)(ii); his rights are held through June 1, 2016; if he's not signed by then, he goes back into the draft.

8.6(a)(ii) said:
if, on or before June 1 of the calendar year next succeeding the Entry Draft, the claiming Club makes a Bona Fide Offer (as defined below) to its claimed Player of an SPC, the Club shall retain the exclusive right of negotiation for the services of such Player up to and including the second June 1 following the date of his selection.

Merzlikins was drafted at age 20 out of Europe, and falls under the much less common Section 8.6(d)(ii); his rights are held until June 1, 2016; if he's not signed by then, he becomes a UFA.

Section 8.6(d)(ii) said:
if a Player drafted at age 20 or older is drafted from a club outside North America, his drafting Club shall retain the exclusive right of negotiation for his services through and including the second June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft

About Merzlikins, from http://bluejackets.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=884519:

Here’s how it breaks down: NHL teams have until the second June 1 after a player is drafted out of North American junior hockey to get them under contract. If the player is drafted out of Europe, they have until the fourth June 1 following his draft unless the player is 20 years of age or older, in which case it’s the second June 1.

With respect to Latvian goaltending prospect Elvis Merzlikins, who was drafted No. 76 overall in 2014, he was 20 years old when drafted and is under contract to a team in a league (Swiss League) that does NOT have a transfer agreement with the NHL.

Earlier this year, the Blue Jackets exercised their option to deem Merzlikins a “defected player,†meaning they keep him on their reserve list and retain his rights indefinitely.

Merzlikins appeared in 46 games with HC Lugano this season and finished with an impressive .922 save percentage, a number that increased to .937 in 15 playoff games. He also saw time in the Swiss Cup, the Spengler Cup and the World Hockey Championship.

“Defected player†seems like such a harsh term.

LeBlanc and Pelletier likely not to be signed today. Is this because of performance or contract numbers? 7 RFAs and the team has 44 contracts - 42 of which are likely to count against the 50 limit. Jarmo has some roster management to do this summer, yikes.

Performance. They didn't improve from their draft years.

I compiled lists for all the AHL Western Conference teams in terms of who's under contract for next season and all the free agents. They can be found here: http://highlandparkhockey.blogspot.com/2016/06/offseason-guide-part-2-ahl-free-agents.html
