Ryan Murray has been standout good in the subway series tonight as the WHL captain (only through 1 period, though)..
fans from other teams agree so it isn't just my bias

Through the first half of the game, I'd call him the best defenseman on the ice. He's just such a stabilizing presence out there. He's always composed, always making good decisions, and basically always sending the play in the right direction. There is a very Niedermayer-esque quality to his game, in how effortless and unhurried he looks.

Morgan Rielly might make an argument with you here. I thought he was fantastic last night, and for me, this is one of two guys we may regret passing on, should Ryan Murray not work out (though, I think it's safe to say that Murray will be fine).

Anton Forsberg had a shut-out today for Södertälje, who are ridiculously stacked now. They've added Cam Fowler and Nicklas Grossman and already the Flyers' Matt Read and Carl Hagelin. They play in the 2nd tier league. Forberg's stats should keep improving, but that's also related to the team.

That's Jackets luck for you right there.

This'll probably end up haunting him for the rest of his career or something stupid too.

With modern medicine being the way it is, if the Jackets oversee this properly and spend the right cash, this shouldn't effect him long term. This was the risk of sending him to the WHL to play with Everett; he is definitely a point of emphasis for the opponents, and any chance to hit him is taken.

We've seen some guys overcome serious injuries come back and go on to stellar careers, it just depends on the rehab and such. Yes, he will probably miss an extended amount of time - maybe the rest of the year, but it would be worth it to see him back 100%.

True but remember Derick Brassard?

From the Mayo Clinic website:

Most people regain full shoulder function within a few weeks after experiencing a dislocated shoulder. However, once you've had a dislocated shoulder your joint may become unstable and be prone to repeat dislocations.

Of the 30 athletes enrolled in this study, 27 (90%) were able to return to their sport for either part or all of their seasons. Three athletes, 2 basketball and 1 ice hockey player, were unable to return to their sport at all. One athlete returned to his sport but was unable to complete his season secondary to recurrent instability episodes (Table 1). Two patients missed 0 days of participation, having returned to play immediately following
reduction.

Of the 27 athletes who returned to their sport for either part or all of the remain season, 10 (37%) suffered at least one sport-related recurrent episode of instability, 1 patient (4%) experienced 2 episodes of instability not related to his seasonal sport, and the remaining 16 patients (59%) experienced no recurring episodes of instability. Eight of the 27 athletes (30%) had experienced an episode of anterior instability before enrollment in this study.

From 'Nonoperative Management for In-Season Athletes With Anterior Shoulder Instability'.

That's if Murray doesn't have surgery. But it seems sugery is better option, long-term, a least if it's anterior shoulder dislocation.

The Treatment of Traumatic Anterior Instability of the Shoulder:
Nonoperative and Surgical Treatment

Results:
Surgical treatment was associated with a significantly lower rate of recurrent instability at 2 years of follow-up (7% v 46%) and at longer-term follow-up (10% v 58%) for first-time traumatic anterior shoulder dislocation, all in younger patients

Visions of Derick Brassard never living up to his top-flight potential due to two separated shoulder injuries are now dancing in my head.

Yes, I'm being as negative as possible.

Says the guy with the blatant Murray hating avatar.

I would argue that Derick Brassard's issues are as much involved with his being rushed to the NHL, rather than his perennial injuries. Another point I'll argue is that Brassard was noticeably thin when he began skating for the Jackets, and in spite of the fact that he was on a tear as a rookie, may have been doomed due to the fact that he wasn't allowed to grow and develop properly. Plenty of players have had good - borderline great - rookie seasons, and then gone on to do little or nothing (Steve Mason?) for the rest of their careers. Who knows if it was the injuries? Brassard has been generally healthy for the last three years, averaging 75ish games in each.

Time will certainly tell here, but in most cases, with injuries like this, character determines the outcome. Character isn't - and never has been - a question for Ryan Murray.

I'm still upset we picked him over Galchenyuk, but I hope this injury doesn't hamper his potential.

I don't think character was the determining factor for Brassard. He may have had a rought start to the season, but when I go back and watch games from this past year I see him outworking most of the team

Same could be said for Steve Mason during his rookie season. And, countless other players who may have been hurried along too quickly ... they need to learn to be pros at some point, and maybe having standout seasons when they aren't mature enough is detrimental to their development? That was more of my point ... not claiming that he wasn't a hard worker.

Sorry to hear about Murray, as an Isles fan I can understand what you are going through. Calvin de Haan dislocated his shoulder and is out for the season, but this is like the third time it has happened because they do in fact keep coming back (at least they do in Cal's case). He was looking like a lock for a steady top four defenseman but now were not even sure if he has a future on Long Island or even in the NHL. I wish Murray and you guys the best luck that he recovers 100% and doesn't have any future problems.

Okay, quick crash course on shoulder injuries.

There are two major joints in close proximity toward the shoulder. The first one is the acromioclavicular (AC) joint. The second is the glenohumeral (shoulder) joint.

In layman's terms, a separated shoulder involves the end of the clavicle (collarbone) separating at the AC joint. There's only ligaments (connective tissue) that keeps that joint together, so stretching or tearing it can cause the joint to separate.

A dislocated shoulder involves the top of the humerus (the upper arm bone) dislocating from the glenoid fossa (socket that hold the humerus). There's a much greater chance of serious injury and effects here because it's not just connective tissue, there's also cartilage, nerves, arteries, and muscle that services the immediate area as well.

A shoulder separation may be painful, but a dislocation may involve an emergency room visit. In some cases, it can be months or years before it finally heals because of the proximity of major nerves that service the arm.

This chart shows the degrees of a separation. A dislocation would involve the joint right under the affected area here (what looks like a white sphere).

If anyone wants some more info on the medical implications of the injury follow the link http://www.sportmedspecialists.com/sms-in-the-news/shoulder-articles

Also, as a counterpoint to the doom and gloom brigade I submit a list of players from various sports who have returned from major shoulder injuries Ron Hextall, Joe Nieuwendyk, Scott Stevens.

I am not comparing Murray to any of these guys, just trying to balance out some of the negativity, some of the posts make it sound like he lost his arm

Thank you!

It's not long ago that ACL injuries were career ending ... now we're seeing guys come back after 6 months with zero lingering effects.

Well between the fact he's young and in really good shape and that the team is gonna give him the opportunity to get the best treatments and rehab i think it will give him a pretty high chance to come back from it alright vs it happening to one of us. The fact he's on a losing team and the NHL lockout also helps in a way because he won't feel as pressured to push too hard to get back early. Of course the world juniors is coming up which sucks but i guess we'll have to just see what happens

Hey Folks sorry to hear about Murray. Wish him speedy recovery.

Thought I would share something I read about one of your prospects. Brock Otten (who posts on HF) and is very knowledgeable about the OHL has a tidbit about Jenner (on his blog). Says might be best prospect in the OHL this year. Thought I would share......
