Two years ago, Cody Eakin was dealt to Kootenay for no less than 8 pieces. The results? The Kootenay Ice won the WHL, but then were the first team eliminated from the Memorial Cup tournament. A proud franchise that has been competitive every single year (seriously, always at the top) is now struggling to even keep afloat after dealing away their entire future for what turned out to be a failed Memorial Cup run. Cody Eakin turned pro after playing only 45 games for the Ice.
For a Ryan Murray deal to take place out of Everett, I'd have to assume the bounty would be even higher, as he is so important to helping out not only now, but also in bringing along the youth, that the 'Tips would be downright crazy to expect anything less.
The bounty for Eakin: Forward Christian Magnus, prospects Ryan Bloom, Jarrett Zentner, Colby Cave, Stephen Myland, and a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round bantam pick.
While none of the roster players have turned out to do much for the Swift Current Broncos, WHL teams are absolutely built by the bantam draft. There's no telling what Kootenay ultimately gave up - or who they may have taken - with those picks.
I'm not saying he wouldn't cost a little bit, just want him to go to a competitive team, so I can watch him on tv more than the WJC.
I don't think he'd cost as much as Eakin though and here's why. Everyone knows that once the league starts back up, he's gone(of course for him to get traded would probably mean no NHL this season anyways, so) so whoever would be trading for him knows he's a "one-&-done" player, thus a little bit of a lower value.
Take for example the Seth Jones deal, in which a lot of folks were surprised by how much the 'tips got for him(18-year-old defensemen Reece Willcox and Ben Betker and 16-year-old forwards Tyler Sandhu and Mitch Skapski). because of not only the NCAA factor, but he too is viewed as a "one-&-done" person.
So the question is, do the 'tips keep Ryan for a short playoff run, or do they trade him for a more "potential" future? I'm hoping for the later cause I'd love to see what he could do in a Memorial Cup playoff.
