Rumor: CBJ interested in Ryan Callahan

What I find bizarre is that we seem to have somehow developed a Team JMFJ / Team Tyutin divide for our blueline the same way we used to have Nash versus Zherdev arguments. What's wrong with having them both - especially considering that neither of them qualify as All-Star enough to justify dumping the other?

Callahan is shiny and neat but I don't see him being worth dumping one of the decent blueliners.

I have no problem keeping both the Olympian and the non-Olympian :sarcasm: And I agree with your last sentence. I'm not enthused about this Callahan idea

Would Ryan Callahan look great in a second line role, behind Nathan Horton? Absolutely.

Do I want to pay him $6m/year to do it? Absolutely not.

If the contract came down to Earth a bit, what would he be worth? For me, one of the young defensemen - Savard, Prout, Erixon, or Goloubef. Just one of them, throw in one of the depth forwards, and let them pick from Dano or Rychel. Or, they can take Gaborik, and maybe we'll throw in one of Erixon or Goloubef to sweeten the pot on their end.

I know we're trying to build a contender, but I don't think Ryan Callahan gets us there. He's a nice piece, but no way should he be the highest paid player on the team (aside from Gaborik), nor should we be giving up the farm to get him. If he isn't good enough to supersede Nathan Horton, why should he get paid more?

Agreed. He's a nice piece and would fit on the team, but not at $6-7 million a year and not if we're giving up Johnson/Tyutin or a whole bunch of our future. As I said before, Callahan's value SHOULD be around what we got Foligno for. But the price seems to be a fair bit above that making this a risky move.

With his contract demands vs production, I wouldn't trade what we traded for Foligno. Giving up anything more than one of our young defenders and a bottom 6 forward would be a bad move. We won't trade for him though, so I'm not worried.

I have to be honest. I probably wouldn't even trade as much for him as we traded for Foligno.

Ranger fan here, not trolling. It was nice to see JD at the Garden last night to celebrate Sam Rosin's 30 years with MSG. JD is still my favorite announcer OH Baby.... It did cross my mind that JD might be there to show interest in a NY Ranger but not Callahan. Dorsett will be coming off his earlier injury soon, the acquistion of Carcillo and how well our 4 th line is clicking now, don't know if the Rangers will have a spot for him. Perhaps one of them might be available. What does Columbus Fans think know that Dorcett was a fan favorite and he is well liked in MSG as well....

Possible but I don't see it. Our bottom 6 is a logjam as is right now.

Pittsburgh (2), San Jose (1) and NY Rangers (1) have scouts scheduled to be in Nationwide Arena for tonight's #CBJ vs. #Panthers game.

Man these scouts in house are making me nervous... JD and Kek are not afraid to make moves but for the first time in my CBJ TD history I don't think I want to make a move... two exceptions, moving RJ (he's been good this season but the dude has cement hands and a poor contract) and picking up a better backup goalie..

Only one of the NHL teams that reportedly had received the Rangers’ permission to discuss contract extension details with Callahan’s agent had phoned Steve Bartlett as of early Saturday evening, the Daily News has learned, and no hard deadline exists in Bartlett’s mind for Blueshirts GM Glen Sather either to strike a deal or trade the pending unrestricted free agent.

“My focus is to continue to talk to the Rangers and deal with the Rangers,” Bartlett said by phone on Saturday, adding that he is “optimistic” and that Callahan will make any final decision. “We won’t close any doors.

“I respect that they have to make the best decision for the team, and I know they respect I have to make the best decision for my player.”

The team that contacted Bartlett is unknown, but it was not the Columbus Blue Jackets, a team that ESPN had reported on Friday was showing interest.

He's also going to cash in and I feel like we have our own Girardi-lite in Prout.

Dude. Put down the pipe. I love Prout because of his physical presence. If he were Girardi lite he wouldn't have been wally pipped by a guy (Savard) who wasn't even with the club last year.

Prout is a shot blocking physical stay at home defender who skates fairly well for his size. Girardi is a shot blocking two way defender (although offensive game not as good as it once was), physical, and skates well.

I think you're overrating Prout and underrating Girardi. A lot. Which is alright....every fan thinks their own players are better than maybe they are.

Girardi has a much more extensive body of work.
Plus he's a better skater.
Plus he's a much more positionally sound player
Plus he's a better offensive player (not his strength really)

Basically, he's a top pair defenseman.

Prout is a third pairing guy (albeit a valuable one). I like him a lot.

we hope Prout becomes what Girardi is...nice to keep it in the pipeline...would love to add him...worried about the price when we're competing with them...also with JD saying we won't go after a "rental type" i can't see it
