I'm pretty sure I keep Tyutin over JJ.

I'm not crazy about this Callahan idea. Good player, but I'm not keen to give up very much for him

Also, all the trades with the Rangers occurred prior to being in the same division.

So wait, in the other thread people wanted a young guy with toughness and leadership who can score, and we're rumored to be in the bidding for one, and now no one wants to give up anything of consequence to acquire him? Losing JJ would hurt, but our defense can afford to lose a piece. Rychel MAY turn into a Callahan, in 5 years or so.

What would the expectations of Ryan Callahan be? If it's anything beyond yet another 20-goal, 50-point second-line tweener, then it's pure insanity. I'll point out that this team is loaded with exactly this type of player, and I don't see why a completely homogenous forward corps is a great idea.

Let me ask you this. If an intra-division rival had RJ Umberger out there, and he was rumored to be wanting a seven-year deal at $6 million per and it would cost assets in the trade market to get him, would you go for it? Would you trade Johnson, Rychel, and a 1st-rounder to get him?

These are questions you should perhaps save for Jarmo or JD, since they are the ones reportedly showing interest. I'm simply continuing the discussion on a message board. It's their money to spend, not mine. If they feel Callahan fits a need on this team and they have a plan to fit him into our budget, then so be it. You or I disapproving of a fictional trade proposal is kind of pointless.

Are some of you on drugs? Only defender as a starting point on this roster is a savard or prout. We have about 6 forwards already like this guy and a 45-50 point, 6 million dollar forward is nowhere near worth a top 4 defender. Juwt because he'd be new doesnt make him better._holy crap._bad thread.

I would be happy if we got him but on July 1st as a UFA. But I do agree, we have too many players like him. Also, his demands needs to be lower(I would accept $ but years no). If St Louis is offering Stewart, what would be the equivalent from Columbus? Should he make more then Horton? In the past(before Horton played) JD said no player on the team is captain material, do they vision Callahan is the guy?

Is it as pointless as the host of posts you made in opposition to acquiring Steve Ott?

I'm pretty sure I keep Tyutin over JJ.

What I find bizarre is that we seem to have somehow developed a Team JMFJ / Team Tyutin divide for our blueline the same way we used to have Nash versus Zherdev arguments. What's wrong with having them both - especially considering that neither of them qualify as All-Star enough to justify dumping the other?

Callahan is shiny and neat but I don't see him being worth dumping one of the decent blueliners.

Tyutin is a stable veteran presence. His absence is always notable. You don't appreciate a guy like that till you lose him. And I have no any doubts he's more valuable than Jack Johnson.

I thought of "overpaid" Umberger first when those rumors popped up. Then I compared their numbers. Let's take just the last 5 years:
Callahan: 297 games, 191 points (96+95)
Umberger: 343 games, 198 points (90+108).
Callahan was averaging a bit more more points, but he played on the better team in the more offensively minded conference. This season Umberger has more goals and assist mainly cause he stayed healthy, but that's also an important quality for any player.
I just hope some people would realize one day that Umberger is not overpaid by much, if at all.

There's no reason for the Jackets to go after Callahan.

Umberger and Goboluef for Callahan would be a nice compromise...:sarcasm:

I don't know what it would take, but I would kill to see a Cam-Dubi-Callahan line.

You reminded me of the Sanderson-Cassels-Dineen reunion days....

I like Callahan and there might be some merit for veteran leadership, that said, if the Rangers are shopping him they have a reason, I hope we don't get hosed.

Oh, if they would take Umberger I might do it... but no top defensemen...

I think we just saw the reason. Six million dollars per year for ~40- 50 points per year for seven years, until he's 35 years old.

If Callahan were coming I would think another forward would be going (not necessarily to the Rangers). I like Callahan but he doesn't offer anything unique, more or of higher quality than other players on the roster.

I'll say it again and head out of this thread. I don't see the CBJ pursuing rental guys with high end assets. If it's a rental it's a bottom pair/#7 D-man or a bottom 6 playoff guy for a reasonable price. More Comeau than Cally. I think they thin the bottom 6 crop regardless and do think a young D-man is moved.

I like Kuleman as an option, Bergenheim (with one additional year on contract), McGinn(Avs) if you want to go bigger... maybe look at the RFA crop on their second contract. If we're really looking to upgrade now and future, I make a push for ROR. At that point I consider moving pieces like Arty, Cam, Rychel, Wennberg, 1st, Erixon, etc. Biggest issue there is the contract but he and Johansen would be a dynamic 1/2 punch up the middle. Dubi can play 3rd line.

Oh hell....tangent. My bad!

I know this isn't going to happen and nobody will agree with me, but it's fun on an off night to speculate. but I would trade Gaborik, Letestu and a 1st for Callahan and Dorse. I wouldn't trade Umberger in this situation, I actually think Umby has played really good this year, yes he can't bury it most of the time, but if he was placed where he should be, 3rd or 4th line, then he would be a very effective checker. I'm not at all opposed to giving up first round picks because we have plenty of young players, too many possibly, let's make a run now.

I wouldn't trade Rychel, I really like what I have heard about him and he will fit in very good with this group, sounds like a tougher version of Boone. I also wouldn't be opposed to trading Wiz, Skille or Erixon.

Would the price to get Callahan cost more for Columbus then other teams because they're in the same division? Would this be tampering? Columbus gets permission from NY to talk to his agent. They tell his agent we want you but don't want trade assets for you. We will go after you in the Summer and would give you (insert years/money). Agent/Callahan/Jarmo has a gentlemen's agreement and Jarmo tells Slats a deal wasn't reached so no trade.

And can Callahan screw us if we make a trade(I know it won't happen as it will look bad on the player/agent). Lets say Jarmo comes to an agreement with Callahan so Columbus pulls the trigger and moves assets for him. Then he has a change of heart and decides he'll test the market come Summer time. Columbus essentially moved assets for a rent a player. Or when they fax the paper work to the NHL, deal is also pending re signing? If he changes his mind, NHL voids it? Jarmo sends paper work for the trade and the extension at the same time? A poster said sign and trades are a no go in the new CBA.

I know you're a Dorsett guy, but he's not coming back here. Remember who traded him. Also, not sure why people want to trade Letestu. He started slow this year, but now he's clicking on all cylinders and is a great 4th liner and penalty killer. Definitely the kind of player we need if we make the playoffs. Seriously doubt the Rangers would want Gaborik back. I think this whole thing is the Rangers posturing to get Callahan to agree to an extension. I just don't see GMJK giving up quality roster players in a deal like this.

Pretty much. I hate trade proposals and all the histrionics involved on both sides. I just threw out an offer based on the "3 pieces" formula that most of these deals usually involve.

You and me both, man. Let's get whoever started this thread.

Yikes, those contract demands are insane. Umberger's contract will seem like a total bargain if someone gives Callahan $42 million.

When I saw the title of this thread, my first thought was that I would be willing to trade Gabby for Callahan straight up as kind of a 'trade of rentals'. If Gabby wasn't going to sign here and Richards thinks that he doesn't really fit in (don't know if this is true, hence 'if'), then OK, we're not losing much. The Rangers might think they could re-sign him now that Torts is gone, so maybe this trade would work for them.

Callahan could provide some leadership to help get us over the hump, and maybe he provides a little more spark to the club than Gabby would. But, if he asks for a bajillion dollars, we let him walk in the summer.

I certainly don't want to give up major assets for him. I am fine with rolling the dice with our current team than doing that.

I'm just speculating, but I think that gets into a serious gray area that's tinted black, and I'd believe that the NHL would take a look at that. The NHL under Bettman has been draconian on anything that could possibly resemble tampering, and although permission granted by the NYR would (theoretically) be open-ended, the mere possibility that another team (or agent) could use that type of mechanism to gauge the UFA market months ahead of time would create a huge headache for the league.

One way that the NHL's operations have been vastly superior to the NBA's in the last 20 years is dealing with the mere appearance of impropriety. If we're looking at the top 10 cases of possible tampering in the last 20 years, the NHL probably has the worst (Scott Stevens), but the rest are all in the NBA with absolutely no consequences or repercussions.

That's why I'd expect there to be some type of conditional return, although someone will undoubtedly make a trade using unconditional pieces. That's some Dougie MacLean type of stuff there, and I'd want no part of taking that gamble.

Sarcasm detected and noted, but I actually posted this in the Player Movement thread and Samkow pulled it out and made a new thread. So if you want to move this back, I give not one crap.

Let's get him, too! And the guy who made some cockamamie offer for Ott and Tallinder in that other thread!
